Mike Brey has had quite the evolution on CF. He went from people saying he was terrible and ND would fire him to people thinking we should hire him. ND isn't firing him and he isn't leaving. They are a good fit.

His relationship with ISU goes back much further than that. I think he was a candidate here after Floyd left, when he was still at Delaware. Although that was a long time ago and my memory may be wrong.

We have one name: Dana Altman. Are you not excited?

I saw Leath oversee the Bubu Palo mess...

Leath has accomplished more during his time at ISU than you can ever possibly imagine and all some of you care about is Bubu ******* Palo. Are you kidding me? Just stop already.

Bubu got himself into his own mess, get over it.

Where's your link that we can't pay anyone? This is an excuse that some people who are downers seem to keep putting out there. Hoiberg was making $2.6mil, which is pretty darn high. There's no reason we can't pay a coach close to that amount of cash. Fred didn't make this job look a million times better than it is: he was the right guy that did everything and tackled this job correctly. I know everyone thinks our program stinks, but if a guy comes in and works all the right angles, hires the right assistants, and puts everything they can into this job (I never feel like McDoormat did), we can win and win a lot of games in the future. Gameday, Hilton Coliseum, one of the loudest and proudest fanbases, and a top ten team. You really think nobody decent wants to take this job? I know you're used to the nutcup mentality, but this isn't like taking over the TCU basketball program.

Hoiberg actually made 2.2 this last year, he was going to make 2.6, which still is not very high. Fred had the 6th highest salary out of the big12 basketball coaches this last year (that is with TCU and Baylor being undisclosed and I'm sure Drew at baylor is making more than 2.2). So the only coaches that we know for sure that Fred made more money than is Tubby Smith and Bruce Webber. So do you still think Fred made a lot?

This just shows we cannot pay a lot. Bama offered Greg Marshall 4mil a year and he turned it down. Now I get that it is bama but this shows we cannot compete to pay big time coaches.

probably for another thread. But what exactly? Cause I'm not finding many inside or out of the university particularly impressed with him. And to head off the obvious retorts - I more or less support him for the VEISHEA decision, so it's not sour grapes.

Don't be do naïve. Sure it does, which is why JP has done a great job with the books despite only moderate success on the field. There is also a big difference between "running and a department which includes hiring coaches" and having exclusive agency in hiring coaches. I have no issues with JP putting a team together to help him hire the coach and reaching out to basketball guys to formulate a list back when it became clear Fred could no longer come back to ISU.

This is niave .... what are the numbers of top half of conferences finishes before and after Pollards arrival? I'll give ya a hint ..... great now than ever.

Underwood’s sample size as HC is smaller than I’d prefer, and maybe he isn’t the best long-term fit.

But fans who think his style of play couldn’t be a continuum of what Hoiberg established with his system — I don’t know where they’re getting their information.

In Underwood’s two seasons at SFA, his teams won 61 games.
In 2014-15, SFA scored 80 points or more in 18 of 29 wins
In 2013-14, SFA scored 80 or more in 12 of 32 wins.

And apparently it wasn’t already part of the program’s identity before he became HC. Look at the previous few seasons:
2012-13: 27 wins, 1 game with 80 or more points
2011-12: 20 wins, 2 games with 80 or more points
2010-11: 18 wins, 2 games with 80 or more
2009-10: 23 wins, 2 games with 80 or more
2008-09*: 24 wins, 4 games with 80 or more points

*This was one of three NCAA tournament appearances for SFA in D1. Underwood coached the other two. Back-to-back, in the past two seasons.

Across MBB however, isn't Fred's salary somewhere in the low 20's nationally? Perhaps even just inside the top 20? So it seems we should be able to complete with about 90%+ of the schools out there.

So I saw that the Hornacek thread is now closed...anyone care to post a synopsis so those of us who don't live here can get up to speed without having to read through 750+ posts (99% of which are likely bull ****)?

Now I really kinda want Otz to get it, and have awesome years in 16-17, 17-18 just to make some people on here look like dumbasses.

Tell u what. If that happens I will drive to Ames...sit in a lawn chair in the middle of campus and let Stormin and Clondude tatoo "*******" on my forehead

This is a good point. In reality if the coach comes from one of these 5 guys the results over their tenure would probably be very similar.

That's the thing; the known candidates look like they'd probably end up with similar results. But take a few of the most promising mid major coaches/ top assistants, and odds are there's at least one home run hire. And likely a couple of medicore guys and a dud.

The Leath/Pollard thing bothers me. Depending on how this shakes out, it could have long term administrative effects.

i agree, but anytime a new superior is hired there can be administrative effects. Bottom line- JP isnt Leath's guy.

If TJ gets the job?

Alright... things are finally getting interesting.

(page and post bookmarked. Need a definition of what constitutes "awesome years" - I set the bidding at 21 wins and NCAA birth)
