Reminds me of a guy blowing all of his winnings at the table because he thought he was on fire. If JP is making it alone, I wouldn't.

Yet putting your trust in a guy stepping in (Leath) that has never made a coaching hire...

I think it's weird that not one Big name wants to interview for the job. I know it's Iowa state. But no big name coaches want to interview? or are the candidates intentionally this bad to push us twards TJ. Cause I'd take him over the names that have been mentioned.

I would think it's pretty risky to jump into something like this, if you're an established coach. You have a relatively short time to figure out this team and how to win with them.

No, putting your trust in him to oversee the process from the University's perspective, not one from an existing 9 year relationship or prior gut instincts made by a bean counter.

Why is it weird? The new coach would get 1 good year and then back to a pre-Hoiberg type basketball program. Fred made this job look a million times better than it is. Plus we can't pay that much and being a school like ISU, we would need to overpay to get a big name coach to come here and JP can't/won't do that.

Not even one coach from a power 5 conference though? Or a good assistant from one.

I don't understand why people say we can't pay a coach a top rated salary. It is a minimum 5K to sit in the lower level now. Is this average throughout the nation? I would think it is in the tier.

I realize there are a lot of other factors that determine how much we pay a coach. But JP can't keep the 5K min donation level for the lower level if we don't win or keep having coaches that will leave if they do win

Who are some of these "big names" that you have confirmation "don't want" to interview with us?

I still want TJ, but I guess I was a little surprised at how underwhelming the pool is as well. There seems to be rumblings of candidates that haven't been mentioned yet and that could be because they are higher profile.

Not saying I would want those guys to be coach. Just feels like there should be more legit candidates.

People seem to think JP is buddies with CPR and TJ. Well they may have become friends in their time working together, but prior to their employment relationship they were not friends. It is just a delusion people have come up with to justify their angles.

He is certainly buddies with TJ and has been even when he was at Washington. And I'll believe you on CPR since he was a ways away at Auburn/Pitt. I don't know about McD but him being at UNI I'm sure JP was very familiar with him.

It's funny, I've never heard anyone give a reason for JP hiring Hoiberg to make him seem brilliant, intelligent, ect. He hired him because he was a famous former player, has great character, and was involved in the NBA. At that point there was a lot of pressure on JP having McD be such a huge flop. He knew fans would eat FH up. I think he got lucky that Fred is an absolute basketball savant and an amazing coach.

With the staff that I've been told TJ will assemble makes me really hope he's our next HC.

Spill the beans, or at least some general details!

Give me TJ.

1. He recruits well
2. Knows the current players
3. Knows what ISU BB is about

AND Most impotantly......

4. He know how to play Hoiball and will continue the style of play. He was involved with game planning and knows Fred's system on how to make things work.

ALSO, the sooner ISU gets rid of Leath the better. This guy has been a pompous micromanaging indecisive ******* since he has been here (and this is not just in regards to the AD, everyone who works at ISU feels it).

Hoiball is not special because of the principles, it was special because of how Hoiberg applied it. Anyone who ISU hires will be a fast paced, spread the floor, 3 pointers and layups type scheme. TJ was an assistant for 3 years under Fred, and for what, 7 years under McD and Romar?

I think people are hopeful that continuity will allow us to hold onto Hoiball, but I think that is pretty foolish.

That is unrealistic. Almost no one pulls a P5 coach to fill a vacancy. Here's the P5 schools that have hired a coach this year:

Florida: from LTU
Texas: from VCU
Tennessee: from the scrap heap
St. John's: from the NBA, kinda
Arizona St: from Buffalo
Mississippi St: from the scrap heap
Alabama: from the NBA scrap heap

Not one P5 school hired away another P5 school coach, and that includes more prestigious programs like Texas and Florida. It is an unrealistic expectation.

This is a good post, but Tennessee hired a P5 coach who had a ton of success at UT, UT just had to make a splash change. And while VCU is not a P5 school, Smart is an elite coach on the national level and Texas really couldn't have done better or made a bigger splash. None of those other schools are even close to the level of ISU's team this year.

Florida isn't really all that great of a job without Donovan. Bad conference and 2nd to football. And the roster is absolute garbage.

Is it fair to say whomever they hire sans Otz, will be expected to retain the current coaching staff?
Otz would actually need to add to the staff.

Think the candidates would all be willing to do this?

Fred is taking Henry, I'd expect TJ to stay along with Mann, especially if TJ isn't offered the UWGB job.

I'd also expect TJ to leave next year following the run in the NCAA tourney we plan to make for a much more attractive job, if he sticks for this year. (Provided he isn't hired as the HC)

You seem to have a problem with accountants. With that being said I am sure JP has never counted a bean in his career (I know I haven't).

Now I really kinda want Otz to get it, and have awesome years in 16-17, 17-18 just to make some people on here look like dumbasses.

Because if they're a basketball school, their minimum (to sit equivalent in the lower level) would be much higher than our 5k and if they aren't a basketball school, then they're most likely a football school which is probably even more expensive. Plus there are a hell of a lot more seats in a football stadium.

How can ISU not afford to pay a coach $2 to $2.5 million?

The athletic department makes $68,000,000 in revenue a year and that's only increasing.

Even the SEZ has been almost paid entirely with donations, right?
