Bottom line, the guy who gets hired needs to be a guy we can trust the way we trusted Fred.

I trust Dana just doesn't roll off the tongue.

I trust Steve, that seems to be a little better.

I trust Brad. That's decent.

I trust TJ. I could warm up to that.

Thoughts?

I think I trust Brad is the most similar. #TeamBrad

So with Pollard's M.O. for previous coaching searches it seems that when names are leaked that none of those people end up being the guy. Now with Prohm, Underwood, and Drew being mentioned for interviews this weekend, does that mean that those guys are just smoke screens for the real hire?

Of course they are cover for hiring TJ. That was a done deal last summer, doncha know?

These threads get so long too quick I don't have time to read all the reponses. Jeremy I like the things you're sharing, I'm glad Leath is pushing Pollard to explore options and not have such a narrow search like he usually does. If you think about it when we fired Morgan it was basically GMac and I can't even remember the name anymore who at the time was a hot coach in Milwaukee I think. When we hired Fred not sure we even considered anyone else did we? This opening comes with a program on the verge of great things and I think it's great that Leath sees that we need to be very thorough with the process and not just anoint TJ because it's convenient and he has relationships with the players already. The program is at the point we should not just settle for the easy out and there are probably well qualified and proven coaches that we should evaluate before making this decision. We can't just look at putting all our eggs in 1 basket for this upcoming season, there is going to be a very crucial transition period right after this year and we have to have the right guy in place to be able to not fall back into mediocrity like we did under Morgan and GMac.

If you go back and look at Pollard's hires he has never done a very thorough search and other than Fred he's missed more times than he's hit a home run. What looked like great hires at the time turned out to be poor choices. Chizik blew up in our face, GMac was a bad fit, Rhoads looked good early on but now his job is on the line this season, Cael did well but we ultimately pushed a legend out the door to hire him then he turned around and screwed the program over when he left and took a bunch of guys with him and now we have Jackson who somehow got an extension for mediocrity. See a trend here... can we name anyone we were in talks with when we were searching for coaches at those times because the candidate pool was very small in all cases if I recall. I hope they are bringing in 4+ people to interview, 1 of them that Pollard may not have thought of as a top choice might just blow him away when they sit down and discuss the job or 1 of them may bring up something that Pollard wasn't considering and allow him to look at the search in a different light. This is not a bad thing people, ultimately after interviewing 4+ people if TJ is the guy Pollard and Leath think is the right guy then I am onboard but I'm glad to hear that Pollard is being pushed to not rush to a choice and evaluate all options.

From all reports Otz wasn't promised the head coaching gig (per CW and Jeremy). TJ took the job to be an assistant under Fred Hoiberg to either be in position to be ISU HC when Fred left (~3yrs) gain more experience to get a HC gig and finally live in Ames. Situations change and thus Otz and has no idea what type of relationship his new boss and him will have or if they would even want him on the staff. To just say be happy and go to work is an oversimplification, especially if TJ or the team, thinks Otz is as or more qualified to be the HC than who they hire.

Secondary concern TJ leaving after next year may be worse for recruiting long term. OTZ being forced to stay a year building recruiting relationships and leaving could end up like Matt A situation where they eliminate ISU late, de-commit and follow him to his next stop except this time ISU won't have a preseason top 10 roster returning.

Hits my concerns exactly.

Smoke screens or misses?

Thank goodness Leath stepped in. This isn't the time for another search from the gut of a bean counter. After McD, whatever, but not now.

the people hating on Otz because they don't like Jaime is a really weird, disturbing part of this saga.

I don't hate either. I just don't feel this is the time or place for TJ to become a head coach for the first time. I would love it if we could still retain him as the associate head coach and lead recruiter but ultimately I think we need to bring in some outside candidates with more experience. This roster is not going to implode if TJ is not the guy, most of these guys have already sat out a year for transfer, are seniors, or at this point really have no choice but to stay due to lack of options so it makes no sense to hire TJ just for the sake of keeping the band together because I think this group will play for just about anyone we hire because they know what is on the line this season. It's beyond this season we really need to focus on. Heck anyone here on the board could probably coach this team to a top 3 finish in the Big 12 this year with the talent we have.

With the staff that I've been told TJ will assemble makes me really hope he's our next HC.

Care to share? Can't just put something out there like that without some substance to it. I'd be shocked if TJ completely overhauled the staff because if we hired him it would almost make sense to keep it intact and just fill TJ's spot.

It's because all the d-bags that feel the need to pump themselves up by posting idiotic gifs and smart *** replies...I'd pay good money for a subscription-only version to decrease the juvenile rif-raf...

I like Underwood over Prohm and Drew. No thanks to those 2 guys. You have been pushing Prohm. No ties to our territory. Has only been at Murray State. Lost his top assistant to La Tech. Poor defensive rebounding team. Has low assist ratio. And has been really turnover prone. Elaborate on WHY you think this guy is so great again.

Means little.what if I told you that in 1994 Oral Roberts had 498 TOs to 450 assists...that's right 498 turnovers...in a season and ranked 191st in pts scored? Oh and btw...the cosch was Bill Self.
