Hoiberg Watch 2015: Friday, May 29 Thread

I would guess he's waiting for his kids to be done with school before making the announcement that he's leaving. I believe their last day is today.

And not to mention clearing space for Diallo on their roster, as well....

That is what troubles me the most. Matt A likely knew that Fred was possibly going to leave. And it appears that Hoiberg would not commit to Diallo that he would be the HC at ISU next year and that was likely why we lost him. That is not a good story concerning Fred's love for Iowa State.

I just can't grasp the mindset of some of you on here. Yes, Fred leaving sucks, but he's leaving you with a legitimate national championship contender. That will be very attractive for the incoming coach. He'll get a ton of talent up front and then can work the recruiting trail hard to keep it going. As an Iowa fan who isn't even sure if we'll make the tournament in any given season I would kill Nickelback for the roster you guys will still have despite Hoiberg leaving. If ISU makes the final 4 with the roster that FRED assembled will you still be incredibly petty? He's taken you to 4 straight NCAA tournaments! That's after McDoormat doing nothing for 5 seasons or whatever it was. FRED put you guys firmly into the national conversation. I'm just amazed that some of you are acting like he shot your dog. He's done a hell of a lot in 5 seasons and set the program up for continued success. SMH.

As much as I disagree with 99,99% of what Hawkeye fans have to say, I agree with this. He could have had the Bulls or Twolves and I truly believe he is making the move now to help the next guy take over without having to rebuild. And for those worried about the year after, in college BB, you can reload. Look what Fred took over, nothing close to what he's going to leave the next guy, and a year later we were back to the tourney and bringing back the magic. The timing reminds me a lot of Johnny retiring, leaving the next guy with a great team, thus looking out for ISU while he follows his own wants. It'd be pretty easy for most guys to coach one more year, have a great run, the leave, it's not like he wouldn't have more NBA job offers next year.

Whether this is true or not, every Cyclone fan if told what the next five years would look like, and the chance to have a favorite player coach the team on top of that, would have taken it. Hoiberg did not use us in any way.

It has been fun, but we'll be right back to where we started real fast unless the next coach is an excellent recruiter. I don't blame Fred, it just seems like the worst possible timing.

After running Thibs out of town, I would think Hoiberg would wonder what exactly Bulls management expects of him.

I for one would expect a whole lot of 'input' from above that is expected to be followed. They obviously expect Fred will do what they want more than Thibs.

So Fred should of lied to Diallo to prove his love for ISU?

That's an ok backcourt at this point. You have an unproven pg, a guy who we haven't seen play after hip surgery, a project, and two guys in Burton and Thomas that would have to improve a lot to lead a team. Add that along with no big mean, and you get NIT at best.

Do you expect the new coach to not recruit any big men? As for expectations, I will reserve judgement until I know who the coach is and what the roster is. But to say that it is NIT at best right now is WAY too premature.

Well, then the players are not very mature about it. If you get axed from a contract for your job for example and you know your last day is in 2 weeks, you still push forward and do your job.

Wow, 18-22 year old college student/athletes not being very mature, shocking. One of the biggest roles of a coach is to find a way to create the chemistry and up until last season, Fred was amazing at that. When you leave it up to the kids, you get what we got last year. As great as last year was, I felt we unachieved all year and talent-wise were easily the best team in the conference.

Appears Fred loves the pros more than ISU at this point.

From March 2013..

Just got off the phone with Fred Hoiberg. "I hope to coach here until I retire," he said.

I've written it before...I wouldn't be upset with Fred if (and most likely when) he leaves for the Bulls, but I would also be perfectly okay with the local/state media asking him some very tough questions at the inevitable press conference. In fact, I'd be disappointed if they didn't.

He wouldn't commit to being the ISU head coach because he would have been lying. He hasn't lied to the fans about his intentions, I would assume the players know/knew more than they let on, and he's not going to start by lying to a kid who is about to make one of the biggest decisions of his life.

Their last day is Monday (as many have already said). I don't buy all the "he's skipping town as soon as the kids are done with school" This is his daughter's last summer before college, and his boys have AAU tournaments with their respective teams through July. At the very least I would think his wife and kids would be around to do those things.
