Seth Greenberg tweets about ISU Practice

I bet Matt Thomas blows up this year and shoots an extremely high %. And I was one of the more disappointed people with his year last year.

Hogue dominated UCONN in the post and off the dribble. Comparing anyone to Ejim is hard but Hogue is pretty darn close.

I think Hogue could be as productive as Ejim. They have two different play styles. Ejim has (maybe had) a better post up game though.

Hogue isn't as aggressive inside with the ball in his hands, Ejim just wanted to dunk everything. Hogue was more spot up outside or putback on a board kind of guy from my usually drunken recollection.

Luckily Hogue will have a legit 5 in the lane come conference season, so he won't have to be the post presence nearly as much as Ejim did.

Hogue is the same size as Ejim. How can he not be the same low post threat based on "body not big enough"? (Arguably I'd say he's more of a low post threat based on his motor but that's neither here nor there)

The only real difference in terms of inside presence that I can think of would be vertical leap and wingspan, but I don't know how Hogue compares to Ejim in that regard.

My take on the Ejim/Hogue comparisons?

I think Hogue is a more athletic, less polished version of Ejim. Not as good of a shooter, but is more aggressive.

The biggest thing Hogue has going for him come January/February over Ejim? A real inside presence at the 5 position.

In what way? Shooting the 3 ball? Or just in their polish and basketball acumen?

Faried and Carroll are much different players.

Carroll, especially in college, was more of a scorer and not a shot blocker or a great rebounder.

Faried is a high-flyer and a tremendous rebounder whose biggest attribute is his motor. He doesn't shoot 3s, or have a polished offensive game, but plays hard all the time and finishes above the rim like nobody else.

McKay is actually listed at 6'9", an inch taller than Carroll or Faried.

A little more.....in response to a person's question:

Question:
@SethOnHoops how's Abdel looking?? He's the biggest mystery on the team so far this preseason

Greenberg's answer:
@hallierethwisch .Nader is an attacking offensive player with a scorers mentality.

I read this as not a good thing? I'm sure I'm over complicating it, but isn't that usually the type of stuff they say about "ball hogs" in a polite way?

As ISU42 said, I took the Nader comment to just be sort of a generic thing. Of course, I think you could also have made a statement like that about a player like Kane was last year, although he had several other attributes as well.

The Hogue comment.....I think maybe we just don't appreciate enough how good Melvin was as only a 6-6 player. I don't think I would have said the same thing as Greenberg in regards to Hogue, but it is going to be difficult for Hogue to take the place of the Big 12 POTY. But then too....I don't think he wil have to, especially once McKay is active.

Once again, this is going to be a different type of team than we have seen before. I think it will be as athletic as any team Fred has had here, and as high-scoring, with some size inside. Hopefully that size will translate into more blocks, better overall defense and rebounds which will ignite the transition game. Whatever, it should be fun to watch.

As I recall when things didn't go right Mel was one to raise a finger and occasionally get ejected, whereas Hogue was one to stick one of his big ole hooves into it and occasionally get ejected. :twitcy:

If Melvin were 6'9" or 6'10", my, he'd been a top ten draft pick...

I didn't really see it that way, but Seth also didn't really answer the question, and the last stat line that Abdel put up was about as peak ball hog as one can get. No one in the last five years of college basketball has taken as many shots per possession than Nader's 42.1% in 2013, and he hit an absurdly low number of those shots.

Ejim seems stronger to me but Hogue jumps higher and has same aggressive mean streak needed at times. If hogues shooting can keep coming like ejim's did there will be a ton of comparisons.
