Friday OT #2 - Tattoos

Can we get a complete listing of CFers with tribal and/or barbed wire bands around their biceps?

No tattoos yet. I've been designing the one that I want to get for the last decade. If it's going to be on my body for the rest of my life, it has to be absolutely perfect. Essentially it's a coat of arms that I've been designing for the last decade (and want to register with the American College of Heraldry), and there's always been something about it that I just don't like, and with that being the case I won't put it on my body. I'm getting really close to final design, though, so now it's more of a finances issue.

Sounds cool. You should post it on here so someone can rip it off and get it tattooed before you do. :jimlad:

Don't have any. Never wanted any. Don't hate them but I would prefer my women with out them because I think the human body is a natural thing that shouldn't be marked by tattoos.

If tattoos have meaning, I respect that. But I have a friend who got her first one two years ago, saying she came up with the tattoo idea herself, it's on her back, and it was a feather that was symbolizing that she is flying free or is independent or something stupid like that. And then a couple months ago she got some latin saying that says she is free and independent or something stupid like that in which she found on pinterest. And then last weekend at a wedding I met a lady that was the same age as her with the same feather tattoo on her arm, so now I know there is no way she came up with the tattoo on her own.

So the following is my issues with tattoos that I'll never understand, because as I said, for me it's cool if they have meaning but there's no other reason for them.

1. Why get 2 tattoos with the same meaning like my friend did?

2. Do you really need tattoos to tell you something about yourself, like your independent, or strong, or do you get them for everyone else to know that you are independent or strong?

3. Why do you get tattoos on your backside? If it has meaning on your back, you'll only see it when you are staring at yourself in the mirror.

4. The inner ear. I have another friend that has the word "love" written in her inside flap of her ear and the only way you can see it is if you get up close to it. She can't make out what it says in a mirror. So why spend the money if you can't even see/read the tattoo?

Regarding #2, I guess I don't see much difference between a tattoo, and clothing, online avatar or something. It's just a way to express yourself. Some people care more and put more effort into it than others.

I don't have any - I know that whatever I would get today, I would hate 5 years from now, so that's why I probably won't ever get one.

My wife on the other hand has 3/4 of her left arm covered (she just told me what her plans are for the full-sleeve), another one on the inside of her right fore-arm, and another on the back of her neck. All of them can be covered with long-sleeves/collared shirts. She previously worked as a credit underwriter for 7 years and never had any complaints about not covering her tattoos at that office. She most recently works at the front-desk of our church and I don't know of anyone that has complained about it - I think the pastor feels like she gives the congregation "street cred" as she is also lead vocals at our contemporary worship service.

I never thought I would be into someone with tattoos, but she really pulls them off well. Most of her tattoos were pre-planned over months and she interviewed different artists before approving the final design.

We've both talked about what those tattoos would look like when she's older. In fact, she was just mentioning to her friends last night that she doubts she'll be the only old lady in the nursing home with "saggy tats" - at least I thought I heard that right...

I SHOULD GET MY AVATAR TATTOOED ON ME!!!!

Serious question because now I'm intrigued.

The only thing on this lady thats attractive is her face. Everything else is blugh. Opinions?

What the hell is on her left arm? Is that drunk Jesus?

Yeah, it's sort of like if they made Jesus out of one of those Monster High dolls that are a thing or whatever with little kids these days.

I don't have any and for some reason a lot of my friends are surprised by this.

I bet she's the inspiration for the lady on Hell on Wheels with that exact tattoo.

Correct. I don't watch the TV show, but I've heard there are some notable discrepancies. The major one, is the TV character plays a hooker - correct? In the historical case, Oatman was a 14-year old Morman teenager, who lived in captivity for 5-years until ransomed back to the whites. She would later marry and live / die in Texas.

My father got them on his arms in the military and said it was one of his biggest mistakes. I listened to him and glad I did. I guess I'd be ok with one in an area that no one saw but then what is the point.

To me they are similar to bumper stickers, which I also think are obnoxious. I have a nephew that for some strange reasons really likes wolves. He has a tattoo of one on his arm and a sticker on his truck window. I still haven't figured out why?

I have 5, and have been wanting to get a 6th for a while now. I've been thinking about doing something based on one of the Grant Wood murals in the ISU library, or something relating to ISU athletics. Got the first at 18 and the last about 10 years ago. All of them are covered by shorts and a t-shirt.

The mural at the library is "When Tillage Begins, Other Arts Follow" and there is a panel for Mechanical Engineering. I'd probably get it modified a bit to look more like a big, inline diesel engine since that's what I work on professionally, and replace the brick background with something else.

she is a lady of the night, correct. My guess is they weren't having her be an exact persona but just took the tattoo to get some of the social stigma storylines. Because a 14 year old Mormon girl really has no place in the story.

ITT: people without tattoos being experts on why people get tattoos.

I don't think thats it at all. I know in my statement I was actually asking questions - I am curious as to why those things are, because I don't understand them.

Anyone else posting in here without tattoos is curious as well.
