What's his fair market value in your opinion? Because in mine, it's not $3 million per year.

Then when he leaves, you should be on here defending that stance.

You act like Iowa State is in a stronger bargaining position than Hoiberg. The extension signed last summer said one thing to everyone. First, Fred is not looking at moving on to another college job, unless it's perfect (Kentucky, unc, duke, etc), and even then it is extremely unlikely he'd leave. Second, his agent is making sure that the nba knows he will talk to them.

He's already turned down overtures from the nba. And that's before this run, his phone will ring and ring this off season.

Then you have to account for all of the positive publicity he's brought to the university. Part of it is helping his bargaining position, but how much Iowa State merchandise, how many inquiries to the university from high school kids all over the country, how many new fans has he brought to Iowa State???

You see dollars in a contract, the reality is he's brought that to the university ten fold. People talk about Ferentz, how much money has he brought to the u of I?

So if we lose him because of unwillingness to compensate him at market value determined by what people are willing to pay, I expect you, and stormin to be here arguing it's ok to go back to McDermott era quality, because it's affordable.

Well, we added Doc Sadler to the staff, and DeAndre Kane transferred in. How much did those two additions contribute to the success of the team? Myself and others are not saying that Fred is not entitled to getting any pay increases or bonuses. Just saying that we have only made it to the Sweet Sixteen......thus far. And I do not think that Fred should be making $3 million plus per year at this time like some are saying. That would put Fred into the plateau of overpaid coaches........which are the ones that Fred's salary is being compared to.

Fred will be well compensated and rewarded. No problem with me on that. But $3 million plus? Then I want Final Fours every couple years and a National Championship or two..

I might add that Coach Paul Rhoads makes $1.71 million per year. Just to add some perspective to this discussion.

FYI, the $99 tickets had already been bumped up to $149 last year. I expect, nay, hope they get bumped again. Season tickets, anywhere in the arena, are worth more than $149. I don't like paying more but I also know I'm getting a bargain that ISU should no longer be giving.

Will this eliminate some current ticket holders? Yes. That is the price of success. You asked for it and now you've got it. How that extra money is allocated to coaches is not my concern but somebody deserves it.

There are several parts to this equation:
  • How much is Fred worth to Iowa State?
  • How much does Fred want to be paid?
  • How much does Fred want available to pay assistant coaches?
  • How much is the AD willing to pay Fred?
  • How much is the AD willing to pay assistant coaches?
  • How much is the AD willing to shell out for other improvements to the BB program?
  • How much autonomy is Fred desiring to run his program?
  • How much autonomy is the administration willing to give Fred?
  • How large of buyouts is Fred willing to live with in his contract?
  • How large of bonuses does Fred want in his contract?
  • How large of bonuses is the AD willing to put in Fred's contract?

At this point way too much speculating over bullet #1 and #4 are taking place without considering all of the other factors. What does Fred want? is the most important question here. What if Fred's #1 priority is improvements to Hilton Coliseum? Should that money be put into a raise for Fred anyway to satisfy a bunch of fans instead? That would be really dumb if that is the case.

Did anyone consider that perhaps the conversation as to what Fred wanted occured prior to his previous contract and those needs were met. Perhaps he has other priorities at this point. How nice would it be to be able to give substantial raises to his assistants - whether he keeps them or has to hire someone else the money is nice to have the very best in those positions. Fred has a degree is finance, I believe. These realities are not lost on him.

The important thing is that the conversation happen after every season to make sure that Fred is happy and feels he is being treated fairly and the program and staff working for him are being treated fairly. If that is happening, we will find Fred succumbing to the lure of other opportunities less likely.

Count me in to sell our souls to the devil and give every coin available to Fred.

Not sure how much each soul will fetch...

This won't be popular - but they need to strongly consider removing the upper deck student section. The students only fill it 3-4 times a year and those seats could be generating much needed revenue.

Those seats are actually generating a lot of revenue, considering they were oversold by 1,000. They aren't a revenue issue, but an appearance and atmosphere issue. The revenue impact would be the amount of clone cones empty student section seats cost versus the amount overselling produces.

The best thing for Pollard, from a revenue standpoint, is to probably oversell them by an additional 500-1,000. If he opens them up to non-students, he can only sell them once.

But those tickets are being sold for less to students than to normal people AND arguably more important is the loss of concession and apparel sales (though I don't know what percent of that equates to revenue).

I agree with you just from an atmosphere and appearance standpoint. I hate being there and seeing that huge empty section.

From a revenue standpoint, it would be interesting to figure it out. I have no idea how much student tickets cost. If he were to oversell by an additional 500-1,000 vs sell those for $149/seat to non-students. Non-students would buy more concessions, I would assume.

Again, I would rather have a full arena. But I don't have to pay the bills. I am sure Pollard has it figured out financially.

This is so spot-on. Compensation isn't the only component of job satisfaction, whether you're a head coach or a bricklayer. If anything, I would expect compensation to be a less significant factor compared to the others when you're a multi-millionaire like Hoiberg and will be financially comfortable in any scenario.

Reading thru this thread I wondered how many people even owned season tickets. Thanks to Cydkar for pointing out that there are no $99 tickets. I've owned tickets for a long time sometimes have paid more sometimes paid less depending how popular ISU BB is at the time. Now is a time where we'll be paying more. Hopefully Fred and the team continue to put a popular product on the floor for a long time. It is fun to have exciting team to cheer for again.

I don't have an unwillingness to compensate Fred. I just am using perspective in recognizing that we have emotions running rampant right now and common sense is not being used. Emotions are the reason you get ridiculous contracts like Alex Rodriguez and Mark Sanchez. And Ryan Howard. And on and on. And the reason we have a bunch of BB coaches that are overpaid being used as evidence.

I also understand that we have a pool of money with which we can pay our coaches and assistants. Spend all your money on the Head Coach and you have little left for assistants. IMO, at this point in his coaching career, Fred is making pretty good money. We have made the Sweet Sixteen......so far. $3 million at this point is just stupid silly talk. Raise the incentive bonuses more than anything else. And if you raise Fred to $3 million at this point then how much do you raise our Football coach's $1.71 million salary?

Does Fred even want to coach in the NBA? Lets not forget he left the NBA to coach at ISU and build this program. This is his baby, at a place and school he loves. You don't seek out this situation just to use it as a resume builder. The NBA season is a 8 month grind. The college season is half that, without the long road trips. He can coach for ISU as long as he wants, most NBA coaches don't last long at a job no matter how much previous success they have had.

Considering the small buyout if Fred takes an NBA job, perhaps. Fred had never been a Head Coach when he left the NBA. In fact, ISU took a leap of faith in giving an untested Fred Hoiberg, who had zero coaching experience, the Head Coaching job at a Big 12 school.

ISU is an ideal fit for Fred. And Fred is an ideal fit for ISU. It works both ways. Fred knows that. I actually can see Fred staying at ISU for a very long time. I can see him being successful. And making even more money........over time.

If he wanted to coach in the NBA he could have been sitting on a bench at anytime. He is respected in the NBA. IMO if his goal was to coach in the NBA, you don't seek out the ISU job. You help find someone to take the job that is a fit long term.

Fred was not being offered an NBA Head Coaching job at the time he took the ISU Head Coaching Job.

This pretty well sums things up from the contract extension Fred was given......just last year.
