Possible candidates for ISU's open OC position...

My gut tells me that Rhoads goes big with the OC hire to springboard into 2014. The last two games give us a sense of momentum, and a high-profile hire will give us a bunch of positive media attention and something to talk about as we look forward to the SEZ expansion.

I think Pollard is likely to green light the money for a bigtime hire with the TV money rolling in now. We need a can't miss hire on this one and will throw some money at someone, I think.

I would like to see whoever the RB spot is be a guy with great Texas contacts for recruiting. Rhoads is evolving his staff into a major bigtime staff, and I think these hires will demonstrate that.

Cheers

I would disagree that we ABSOLUTELY need to hire an OC from outside the program. I'd be OK with Sturdy being named OC. He's only been on staff for 2 years, and I think that he would bring a change in offensive philosophy, which I'd be in favor of.

As a side note, my biggest problem with Messingham was that I couldn't figure out what our offensive philosophy was, or even IF we had an offensive philosophy.

Has anyone thrown out Kurt Ropers name??? I was really hoping he would be mentioned. I really like the idea of having Sage as a QB coach for two reasons, 1 because I think its obvious he understands the QB position and 2 you gotta think with connections like him he could recruit rather well. When the smoke has cleared we better not go in house again, you gotta get an exciting hire especially coming off of a 3 win season.

Not sure what we could offer Roper other than maybe a raise.

My preferred scenario would be Sage as the QB coach and bring in an OC that has experience working with RBs. I like the idea of having an assistant that could put a majority of their energies in QB development without all the additional responsibilities that being OC entails. And if Sage works out well and gains coaching experience he could end up being the OC at some point.

Maybe Paul already has his picks since he fired the two the day after....

Is Gene's fishing buddy still looking for work?:v_SPIN:

Doesn't matter. CPR can't afford to have ANY position coach learn on the job.

I'm gonna go on a rant here.
WAY too many people on this board and in the Cyclone fan base in general would rather have the fairy tale and be nice guys than actually get the best coaches available. Sage needs to coach somewhere, anywhere, before he should get a shot at ISU. Same thing with people who want to bring Loney back. Yes he had success here, but it was over a decade ago. Football is light years different now.

CPR gave Messingham a shot because he trusted him, and it didn't work out. That's ok. CPR has to make the best hire possible, regardless of ties to ISU or sentimental value. His job depends on it. He also has to bring in another proven assistant whether it's QBs or RBs. That guy has to have experience coaching his position and as a recruiter.

Spot on Sir, especially about the recruiter part. We need a young dynamic guy with recruiting connections and credibility with returning players. Rhoads knows he has to get this right and with 20/20 hindsight knows he botched it last time. Can't wait to see who he comes up with and then can't wait to see if it works out.

Do you think Klenakis and Sturdy were originally brought on for concern of mess's resume?

Mangino is BIGTIME.

Mangino is BIGTIME.

Future conversation at recruit's kitchen table: "Coach Mangino, can you tell me what happened at Kansas?"

Regardless of what happened, we don't need the baggage. Margin for error too thin this time around.

Haven't been overly impressed with Sturdy as our Passing Game Coordinator. So I wouldn't be thrilled if he became our Offensive Coordinator.

I am all for 2nd chances. I am confident that CPR can control Mangino. And this guy knows how to run offense.

Can you blame Cyclone fans though given the history? It feels like the hottest and supposedly best available coach often ends up like Chizik or Tom Herman. It really has to be a combination of a top candidate who wants to be in Ames.

Interesting things about Kurt Roper I learned from his bio on the Duke site: He was born in Ames and up until this year, his brother Zac coached running backs at Duke--which happens to be another position Rhoads recently vacated. Could this be another family operation, like the Burnham defense?

That's essentially a title that doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. He helped out Mess with the offense just like all the other assistants did.

So what does a Passing Game Coordinator really do?

When the media asked him about this he said something along the lines of "I help coach Mess with the passing game," then followed it up with talking about how all offensive coaches help in the offensive game plan. I wouldn't put to much stock in the idea that our offensive struggles were in any way Sturdy's fault.

This is my feeling too, although I really have no idea. Messingham was still calling plays and had the final word on gameplans.

Kind of makes me depressed that any of our offensive coaches were retained if they were helping Mess with our offensive game plan.
