Possible candidates for ISU's open OC position...

Tommy Birch and Randy Peterson both think it will be Todd Sturdy so....

That's essentially a title that doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. He helped out Mess with the offense just like all the other assistants did.

Helps justify a larger than average position coach salary and keeps the words "coordinator" on the resume line. He wasn't calling the plays, so he wasn't the OC. I like the guy and I think we're going to have a top3 receiver unit under him in the conference next year and beyond.

I agree, I'm sure that the whole situation has been discussed between Rhoads, Messingham and Jamie maybe since the beginning of the season or even further back. The coaching fraternity is very close and I'm sure that there have been feelers put out about possible replacements a long time ago. This is big business and decisions are not made on spur of the moment and there is a lot of input from a lot of sources ( not internet messages boards).

Oh no you didn't!

I find it highly improbable that we elevate one of our staff to OC considering how bad our offense really was.

Another question to bring up, are we switching to a pro style? I think we have the horses to do that,

Rhoads has said almost nothing to imply we would. Even if we do go under center some, we don't have the o-line or the running backs for a power running game, not to mention we will have a very deep receiving corp next year. All four of our quarterbacks also played in spread offenses in high school.

It amazes me how the journalists covering the program can be so off. You can tell they don't pay attention to forums or insiders. In Peterson's case, he thinks he's the insider, but he's really just a bad writer with tenure. I know they like to think, as journalists, they are above our kind of chatter, but to be so oblivious to the pulse of the fanbase is foolish nowadays. And CF is very much an integral part of the athletic department. Whatever is discussed here is usually the same topics everyone is talking about in tailgates, bars, parties, socials, etc. Peterson and Birch will both be wrong and they will both appear blindsided even though the clues are right in front of them. They're very much behind the curve as opposed to Hines who appears to understand how sports journalism needs to operate in 2013.

Here is my dream scenario

Mangino=OC and RB coach
Loney=O line
Rosenfels=QB coach

My god this would be awesome

Reality=CPR already knows who the OC is and it's probably internal.

I don't see many people advocating for Sage as OC. Most people discussing him are advocating he come in as QB coach with an experienced OC.

Umm....

If you get Sage in a room and give him a bunch of looks on video and he responds well...why not?

Sage reminds me a lot of Hoiberg. I heard him talk at one of the coaching clinics and the guy is sharp. He's a disciple of the game and takes everything in from those around him. When you first here his name it doesn't jump out at ya, but then after talking to him the similarities of CFH and Sage seem eerily similar. You just never know.

Just get me somebody and quickly the ol' ticker isn't going to make it through this search if things don't pick up steam!

I like the idea of Sage, just because CPR has been hiring veteran coaches, and it would be nice to see some young blood added. Maybe a younger guy for the RB coach?

I am really liking a Sage Rosenfels hire. Would be a great idea. No coaching experience, but heck it worked with Hoiberg.

Sage Rosenfels, former Iowa State/NFL quarterback - Yes, that's the right idea! ISU's weakest link under Rhoads? QB development and recruiting. Need a guy that the QB's can relate to and be developed under. Is Sage that guy? Unproven. Pluses are should be able to attract and retain much better QB recruits. What single player will make more difference on a team than QB? Ask Klenakis if he'd be here without that Nevada QB that currently starts for SF 49ers. Nope. Bring him in as QB coordinator and have Sturdy and Klenakis share o-coord duties if they can work well together in that role and let Sage grow into the position only as QB play improves. Or have them mentor his as needed. I'm sure he's learned a thing or two about game planning after so many years in the NFL.

I assume we wont hear anything till the end of the bowl season...? I know CPR is on the recruiting trail for the next 2-weeks.

Would Sage even want to be a coach? If he did he sure isn't pounding the pavement i.e. getting an assistant position so he can build a resume. Or does he assume he can just waltz in and become an OC.

Does anyone know if Jimmie Dougherty's name is being thrown around at all? He's a young guy who has been around some great coaching and is starting to make a name for himself and his offense. He is just in his first year as OC at San Jose State, but they put up some impressive numbers and didn't have too bad of a season if you look at his numbers and who they played. He worked under Jim Harbaugh at USD and helped get Josh Johnson to the NFL. He's got a great playbook and has ties to the Midwest... he was the QB at Missouri??? a few years ago if I remember correctly. Anyway he's an offensive cooridinator/ qb coach, which IMO is what we need. Anyway just curious if anyone has heard his name thrown around at all. I'd be all for getting a young guy in again with a drive and fire to make a name for himself.

Nice search. Pretty sure still not the consensus. Time for a poll?

Never said it was the consensus. My original comments was for those who are calling for Sage to be OC need to stop. Again, love him. But not the right fit. These would be the people I am referring to.

Not my dream scenario at all. My dream scenario is to get Dave Schramm as our OC. The rest is details.

I like Jimmy Dougherty. He is on my wish list......but after Schramm or Chrstensen. Like their experience as OC's over Dougherty.

Hard for me to see that happening, unless there is another school calling on Sturdy and CPR promotes him to keep him. If CPR decided to go with Study/Klenakis, it would have been easiest just to announce Mess was being dismissed and Sturdy was being promoted. To wait and suggest a candidate search would go over like a lead balloon with the fan base at this stage. It would reek of, "well, we could not find anyone, so promoted from within."

Sage just recently retired from the NFL. I don't think he's even had time to look around and decide on what he's going to do next.

What if Mess wasn't calling the offense the past few games...would that change your mind?

That being said, it would be a disaster to hire from within.
