Shady Bars of Ames

I guess I should have added a disclaimer saying that I actually liked Thumbs and did their Milwaukee challenge more times than I care to admit.

Dangeous Curves circa 2007 (at least by the insecure glance over the shoulder of every guy that walked in there it must have been shady) The could also just be feeling guilty. As for bars that had a impression of crime... I cannot think of a one in Ames. There were some shady bars in Des Moines though.

I agree with the Sips comment, it was a criminal act just walking in there. I sure crimes were happening AFTER people left Element but that was mostly due to the standard creepy 40 year old there to pick up college girls.

We used to hit this place for FAC on Friday's...however, when we went it was EJ's Legacy. Shady back in my day...

Funny thing is my company handled a fire for them in the early 2000's...the guy handling their fire said their contents items were quite interesting! Never sorted through so many g-strings in his life(rubber gloves a must)! :yes:

Look into Mangostinos (sp?). Lovish own's it, and I've never seen anyone go into it.
I see lunch and dinner specials on the signs, beer trucks stopping by, yet never have seen a car in the parking lot.

I think it's closed now but Pappy's Pub in Colo was interesting. I once saw a biker holding a toddler in one arm give a guy an uppercut that picked him up off his feet. Guy went sprawling on top of our table knocking everything over and we got a free pitcher out of it. Bartender hardly looked up and did not bother to take any action. Nobody in bar seemed surprised so I guess it was a typical Friday night in Colo.

All, a friend of mine is a amateur crime writer and asked me what I thought were the shady bars of Ames (past or present ) I wasn't sure what to tell her since most of my watering holes are pretty mellow. Any thoughts ? I figured I would post and get some input. You can define shady as you like and post what's fit for the public's consumption ( what's not, etc you can send me a message via the profile)

Long Shot was a great place and I revisited Thumbs this past summer and nice to know things hadn't changed much since my time of hanging out there while in school. I plead the 5th on all....

Inspiration Point back in the 70's. You could see a great band for a buck but you risked getting stabbed or shot. Drugs all over the place. It was a blast and definitely a shady joint. Too bad it burned.

Big Jim's, the Viking Villa, and Chris' Go-go (Cambridge) were always awesome! Chris' is now Main St Bar and something but basically just an old watering hole now. There used to be some sketchy places in Boone where the Sons of Silence motorcycle gang hung out, but I can't remember the name of them. Do the Sons still roam Boone at all?

I'm not sure what the definition of shady is in bar terms, but Lumpy's is probably the best dive bar I ever went to in Ames. The only crimes were public urination.
