Metcalf antics

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Long get into a bit of trouble over the summer? Something to the tune of underage drinking, getting in a fight with a cop, possession of a fake ID. I realize UI's football has had a number of transgressions, but Long got little to no punishment for that.

Correct me if I 'm wrong but didn't Clayborn punch a cab driver and then have his court date postponed until after the football season? If you want, we can continue this game and see who runs out of incidents first.

There must be something we don't know about it because your would think ferentz would have suspended clayborn if he had assulted the cab driver

Don't give me this crap about how Iowa football doesn't discipline its players. Look back at that list of guys that got in trouble and tell me how many of them are still on the team. Only the ones that got into minor alcohol-related offenses were/are still on the team. And you can't say they take it easy on good players because Dominique Douglas, probably one of the best receivers Iowa has ever had, was immediately suspended and ultimately kicked off the team. And on top of that, Iowa suffered because of all these problems. They went 6-6 in 2007 and missed out on a bowl game. But guess what. Ferentz turned things around, instituted some discipline and Iowa won the 2010 Orange Bowl.

As far as Metcalf goes, the guy is your typical wrestler. It seems the more success they have, the more arrogant they get. There are a few exceptions, but wrestlers, stereotypically, are jerks. Ever talked to one of the Paulson twins? There's two of the biggest D-bags, you'll ever meet. Crying about it isn't going to change it.

I never said I defended Metcalf's actions, he was wrong, but he wasn't disrespectful. As was Varner, so if you're talking about Metcalf, you should also be talking about Varner, clapping in his opponents face before getting his arm raised, walking towards the Iowa bench while the official tried to push him away, then clapping again in the hawkeye coaches faces, all while down by 7 points as a team. It reminds me of the safety in football, celebrating his huge hit after a 30 yard gain. Perhaps if he spent all of his energy on the mat, instead of worrying about his after the match celebration, he'd be able to Major our backup wrestler. This isn't the first time, nor the second, but the third time, he has made actions towards the hawkeye bench this year. I'm not sure what the football program has to do with this conversation, but last I remember Banks was suspended a whole practice for being caught with marijuana seeds. I know I know, they weren't his. Long fights cops and is suspended 1 meet, while Marion breaks car window, and is suspended first semester. We all have our issues, and Metcalf and Varner were both wrong, and should have a little extra attention from their coaches about antics on the mat, because this isn't the WWE.

I have a lot of confidence in Coach J, but I guess I wouldn't have called out either Metcalf or asst. Coach Brands in the press. It's like admitting that they are getting into your head.

I think I would have kept quiet in the press, and then pass things on to my wrestlers and let them take care of business on the mat.

Brands congratulated Brent after match, and Brent responded with the jerking off motion back to him, with the "I sucked, don't congratulate me" intentions, as he only beat mueller 7-3, and that's probably why Brands didn't shake hands with him as Metcalf was mad at his performance. The problem, was that he was still in the middle of the mat, and everyone saw it. He was wrong, but he wasn't disrespecting Mueller or ISU.
Sure, and his push after the back flip after last years final was just a congratulations pat on the back.

I think if you watch the video of him you can see their not in his head. This guy is going to win this season. Mark my word there. I think we come out ahead at the end of the season.

I would say Caldwell had that coming considering he started prancing around before the match was over.

I fully support Jackson going public with the issue. Punk behavior by those associated with Iowa's wrestling program has been given a free pass for too long. It's clear that nobody in the Iowa administration has the stones to rein it in. They might chose to ignore it or even encourage it, but it's only fair to start getting some outside criticism.

If Metcalf can justify a push like that for poor sportsmanship then he better know better than to be pulling that kind of crap himself. It's a two way street fella.

Don't give me this crap about your football coach taking care of his problems. I just wonder, how many times does the cycle have to repeat itself before your fans start questioning why your coach is bringing these people to your community (oh yeah, most hawk fans have never lived in IC.....)? The next logical question is; is this bad luck or does your coach just not care? Perhaps a glimpse into the answer can be gleaned from the fact that the coaches own son is a multiple offender?

Just win, that's all the fans care about........

Fella? Can you recall a time where Metcalf was celebrating and running around DURING a match?

I don't especially care for the guy either. But in that scenario with emotions running and Caldwell acting like a tool, I have a hard time pinning too much of that onto Metcalf.

You don't even have to look further the coaches kid to see disciplinary problems.

Are you really being serious right now. Metcalf has no right to authority on sportsmanship. Maybe he just didn't like the fact someone else got to show him up. Glass houses man, glass houses.

There were only a few seconds left, and Metcalf was down enough that the only possible way for him to win was a pin, which was nearly impossible due to the time left. I'm pretty sure if you beat the so-called "unbeatable" number 1 ranked wrestler at that weight, that you'd be ecstatic too. It's not like he was running around celebrating with 20 seconds left in the match...

If Varner had lost his finals match in similar fashion and had his competitor acting like Caldwell did, many here would sing his praises for giving him a shove. It wasn't the right thing for Metcalf to do, but I understand.

Some folks need to get past the blind hate for Iowa and try to consider things objectively. Brent Metcalf isn't Mark Perry or Johnny Hendricks. Not by a long shot.
