I drove my neighbor to the ER yesterday evening after I watched him collapse while mowing his lawn. He suffered heat exhaustion, and if I didn't see him, probably would have suffered much worse. He got at least 4 IV's of fluid pumped into him.

Hydrate!!!!!!

And exercise intelligence. If you don't absolutely have to be outside, don't be!

I had to mow yesterday as well. Smaller lot and mostly shaded. But still - what usually takes me about an hour moved closer to 1:30+. My wife came home as I was finishing up - took one look and just plainly stated "you look miserable". Summed it up quite well. Turned the hose on myself for a few minutes and felt oh so good.

Came inside, cleaned up and got on the scale. Dropped 6 lbs from yesterday morning.

Dangerous out there.

Speaking of hoses......true story. About six or seven years ago, I was watering my front yard on a really hot day, and a college age gal jogged by and asked if I would mind spraying her down with the hose. My response.....really?:GEEK::goofy::biglaugh: So I sprayed water up in the air in her general direction, and then cussed myself the rest of the day for my unpreparedness. Not to mention was cussed by my girlfriend who was watching through the front window.

Same thing with me. I was planning on working out last night, but after mowing the lawn, I didn't need to.

When we did mission trips to Appalachia where it was 95 and more humid than here, we always did the gallon challange where you had to drink a gallon of water between the times of 9-4.

Well, my highlight wasn't remotely that good.

But there were a couple of joggers and dog walkers that went by - and the dogs were most assuredly not holding the leash. Gave a bit of motivation to stay out there and press on.

I was originally planning on riding my bike down to the ICubs game tonight for a bit of exercise - about 15 miles round trip.

Now I'm thinking that's just plain old-fashioned stupid.

I did that during the course of a baseball game in high school. Heat index was 116 when the game started at 7 that night. Catching was chilly....very chilly.

I put 22 miles on last night from 6-7:30 and once I got going it wasn't bad at all. I make sure to drink 2 bottles usually on that distance when its hot out and make sure to immediately drink 32 ounces when I get home.

Sorry, I forgot to clarify - I'm a wuss when it comes to heat.

I know what you're saying. Once you're acclimated - it's not all that bad. After, we took my in-laws to dinner for father's day and birthdays. We were standing outside when leaving and they were complaining endlessly about the heat. Strangely enough, I was rather comfortable.

Our first two days in Jamaica last October, none of our students was breaking a sweat, while I was drinking a bottle of water every hour. I was starting to wonder if these guys ever got hot.

By the 3rd day, everyone had their handkerchiefs out, and people were sweating like crazy. And my normal classroom was the one with the broken fan!!! :wideeyed:

I mowed late Saturday afternoon so I should be good for another day or 2. Hopefully it will cool down a bit by Thursday.
When it gets this hot I sometimes take a 2 day approach to the lawn. Mow the front and sides on one day and then the back the next day. That makes it about 20-25 minutes each day which isn't too bad.

God strike me dead for saying this, 'cause I'm as big a lawn-nazi as anyone and I'll surely regret it in a month - but the one good thing about the heat is that it may slow the grass down a bit.

This mowing every 4th/5th day is getting pretty flippin' old.
