*** Official #16 Texas Tech vs #4 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

It's 3 point shooting will abandon them in the Big 12 tourney playing back to back and without much of a bench. And this team, without Toppin now, relies almost exclusively on shooting a ton of 3s. Looks good when they're falling.
There used to be an article called Giant Killers regarding the NCAA tournament. Maybe it still exists.

One of the biggest metrics for making runs and massive upside was the variance of a 3 point shooting team.

They shoot a lot and shoot it well.

This game today seems like luck, but it was not luck.

EDIT:

Losing by 30 is the same as losing by 1 in the tournament.

Shooting 35 threes at 40% is 14 made threes.

That’s a lot of juice to overcome obstacles.

I think you're exaggerating the "jumping off a bridge" thing, x100. Fans are disappointed, which is very normal. We got our asses f*cking handed to us for much of the game today, at home, in Hilton, against a team missing it's All-American.

Sure, credit to Tech - they are a good, well-coached team that came in with a great game plan, executed well, and most importantly - glad confident and composed. They have some amazing wins this year, so clearly their talent level is impressive. Fans are not disappointed though because we lost to a good team, they are disappointed with how we played. The team wearing black today played with a greater sense of urgency, more desperation, and more confident. The team in white only did that in spurts. That's a tough pill to swallow.

And playing that way today especially may have cost us a double bye in the Big 12 tournament. So yeah, losing today sucked. Horrible loss? On paper, of course not. Tech literally beat Duke, Arizona, etc. Given what was on the line? (Being alive for a 1 seed, aforementioned double bye in the B12 tourney) - it would be very weird if a diehard fan was not to be bummed about how the Cyclone players and coaches performed today.

And for the fans that are REALLY pissed off and jumping off a proverbial cliff - kinda get it. 7.5 days ago, we were given a mountain of respect by the committee being picked as a 1 seed. It would have been very cool and more importantly - very valuable to our brand - to continue to win and play well and actually get that 1 seed.
I love your passion here in this post and I have a different perspective. I think for the most part the players want to win and will play hard especially for a program like ISU. So for the most part success is left to coaching and injuries. How much can you get the most out of your athletes both from a mental and physical aspect.

I don’t understand how you can blame a team. Assuming they want to win and will do their best to win and they aren’t injured then it comes down to coaching and athletic talent.

You kinda end your post insinuating that they should have won b/c they had the opportunity to be great and should have taken advantage, but that’s not how sh*t works if they’re just flat out outmatched in that game.

I guess it comes down to do you think the players want to win or not. I think they do, and so it really comes down to coaching and physical matchups. Then of course, there’s Hoiberg’s kid at Nebby and that’s just hustle and grit and it’s pretty awesome.

As much as we love Lipsey, the criticism is warranted. He’s not immune from that despite playing 4 years here. It sucks to say it, but it’s true.
The only criticism that is warranted of Lipsey is that he probably plays through too much pain, doesn't complain about it. The coaches could shut him down, but probably also acknowledge that even hobbled, he is a better option than anyone else that they currently have on the roster. And honestly, he still makes tons of plays. Your starting point guard being at 30% or whatever from 3 isn't a death sentence for an offense. But when you combine with another guard that is 30% or worse, and a 5 man who doesn't score beyond 5 feet from the hoop, you get problems.

The guard who was supposed to come in and help space the floor more and probably really relegate Toure or Batemon's minutes got hurt somewhere around this time a year ago while playing for Eastern Washington. As a fan, you have to be grateful that Toure and Batemon have really gotten the opportunity early in their careers to make an impact, and it should benefit them and the program for years to come, but at the same time probably put a serious glass ceiling on the teams ultimate upside for this season, and I think it's becoming more obvious the closer to March we get.

Yeah that’s what I keep saying is that it’s gonna be hilarious winning against Arizona Monday lol most cyclone thing ever win games when you aren’t expecting it and lose when it should be a win
Beat Arizona then lose home finale to Arizona State would be peak this year's team.

Well then, maybe tj needs to not let one of the best shooters in the country take 6 wide open 3s. It's his plan that did that.
The hard double team trapping is the basketball equivalent of John Heacock's dime stack 3 man front defensive scheme. It doesn't work every time, but when it works, it REALLY works

Well, it is what it is. The game of basketball is funny, especially over the course of a long season. Disappointed we couldn’t get it done at home today. We are definitely seeing a pattern with TJ’s teams….start off the season strong, but start to tread water a bit in Feb and Mar. I think with the physical style that we play with, we succeed early in the year when we are fresher and other teams aren’t prepared for that intensity. We also play an easier schedule early in the year. This early spike in the trajectory also sets expectations really high for Feb and Mar, which are a bit unrealistic for the talent level of our teams. Our teams with TJ, especially the past 3 years, have been talented. But to be honest, with our NIL budget we will never have elite talent and depth. Before this season I thought we would make the tourney, but nudge our way in as a 9 or 10 seed. Never thought we would have 24-25 regular season wins with this roster. 3 good and experienced pieces coming into the season, but everyone else was unproven. As we moved thru the first few months, expectations went sky high, honestly too high. We will see moving forward, but I think TJ’s teams will always outperform their talent level, but regress toward the mean as they consistently face talented teams. So happy we have TJ as our coach. For anyone that watches the player interviews, also so proud of the character of players that TJ brings in. Super stand up guys that do not bring any drama to the table.

Its the reason we are having unprecedented success and have a top 5 ranking. Its our identity. We wouldn't have even beaten Purdue without it. The amount of turnovers and confusion it caused was incredible.

Our guards went 1 of 11 from three point distance today, Heise didn't attempt one. Tamin was 0-3 and Toure was 0-4. So our starting backcourt was 0-7 from distance today. Compare that to TT, out of there 5 guys that shot a three today, they all hit at least one. 1-2, 3-5, 6-10, 2-8 and 2-4. A few of them were wide open shots, but many we defended half way well and they still hit the shot.

For us to advance in the B12 tournament and the dance, we have to shoot better from 3. We cannot rely on Milo and Jefferson to carry all the load there, Toure and Lipsey have to start knocking some of them down or we will not last long in either tournament.

Have you ever seen a team do anything in the tourney without elite guard play? I haven't. Lipsey doesn't need to score 20ppg but he has to be masterful at controlling tempo, not turning it over, and hitting open shots.

This, in addition to Tech’s insane shooting (which isn’t sustainable in tournament play) is why we lost. Make two or three of those threes and the flow of the game is different.

Once again, it was not the 73, it was the 82. I was worried about this one because what I've seen from TT is that Toppin was a tremendous player, but tended to dominate what they tried to do offensively. With him gone, they've become much more of a passing team, with the offense spread around.

Sucks, but onto Arizona. That's going to be a tough one to say the least, but these guys will be focused. Find a way to somehow win that one and this one may as well not have happened.

I don't think giving up 82 was that bad considering how well Tech shot the ball. I'm more worried about ISU not hitting shots. 90% of the time out opponents won't shoot that well. That was once a year type shooting performance by them. Let me know when teams shooting like this against us become a trend.
