ISU unranked in AP poll

Need I remind you of 2002
#9 Iowa State traveled to #2 Oklahoma..
Was in Cancun during the game. After my 3rd Pina Colada, headed inside to the resort's internet to check the score. 2nd quarter and were down big. Seneca was like 3-17. Put a big damper on the rest of the vacation.

Why should last year merit any weight? This isn’t 1997 anymore. Rosters turnover and change so drastically year to year, at this moment in time, last years results don’t mean what they use to.
I don’t disagree, but as I said earlier NIL and transfers are a wildcard factor (which could be a bad thing just as much as a good thing). Just look at preseason polls, they’re so much worse now in terms of prediction vs results. If we’re being honest, preseason polls, FPI, AP poll, coaches poll- these all need done away with or should not start until mid-October when there is more conclusive and reliable data through larger sample sizes.

But that’s never going to happen because instead the networks and media just use them as a tool to prop up and push down certain teams and leagues in order to manipulate perception in the way they best see fit. Which is my larger point, I just don’t see how the media feels that they can definitively say Oklahoma or A&M are among the top 25 teams in the country this early but TCU and Kansas are not.

The polls early in the season are garbage based on bias and what people think they have returning or have brought in more than games played. UT will be a decent team, they may not lose again until they face Georgia late in the season. It's a crime that KU is not getting at least some votes, they have looked sharp in two games. ISU is ranked where we should be after two games.

There are some really dumb people who get a vote in this. This lady has Kansas State (19) ranked above Iowa State (23). Also, she kept Texas at 3 even though they lost. Lastly, in the pre-season she had ISU 19, after going 2-0 she drops them to 23.

The AP poll is one of the dumbest in all of sports.

pending how BYU and TCU keep doing, Big 12 might be able to have 5-6 ranked teams most of the year.

I was surprised to see we moved to #16. With kst almost shitting the bed I thought we’d only move up a couple. Alabama being ranked is a joke and LSU should be #2 imo

Plenty to nitpick in these polls, especially anyone that still has KSU above ISU, but I don't see an issue with keeping Texas in the top 3 or only swapping them with Ohio State.
Doesn't make sense to keep them at #1, but if someone had them at #3, did much change for them when they lost by a TD on the road to another top 3 team?

Is it really dumber than the coaches poll? The coaches aren't watching games that their team won't be playing. They are coaching on game days. And, they will vote up their own conference to make their team look better. So, the coaches poll might be "dumber" than the AP.
They both are dumb in my opinion lol. Voters also have their own agendas as well.. And I can’t stand those who have a vote and flat out don’t watch the games or teams they’re voting for.

But agree entirely about the coaches poll. You think they spend too much time on them? Not a chance

And really they shouldn't.

Any team outside the schedule should be irrelevant, which only magnifies further the lack of need for it.

Use formulas after a month or so and let things fall where they do.

Completely agree. Also, those formulas need to be made viewable to the public.

For sure...however their good line play honestly scares me...they also have the ability to come up with turnovers either earned or by luck.
it's always the turnovers that scare me....would be nice if we could force some turnovers and do it deep in their own territory..but they're going to try and run as much as they can

It was a tough day. I envy you being in Cancun. I was in those stands...in the rain...watching that debacle...and hearing the OU band perform boomer sooner for the 437th time.

Early season computer polls are never great and they're even worse now with transfer mania. They're kind of screwed either way if they account for transfers or not. You see both cases where a team is suddenly great and another where a team brings in great transfers and it doesn't gel, how do you compare that to a team that mostly stayed together?

Halfway through a season though with no data from the previous years I'm inclined to prefer computer poll average of some sort than the committee and voters who last year thought SMU>BYU despite all evidence and no reasoning.

The Massey matrix poll of polls is a radically better ranking after one week than ESPN's jerkoff FPI
