Turn kicking woes into competitive advantage

Am I the only one who thinks the recent kicking woes might be a great opportunity to create a competitive advantage? Every decision is situational, of course, but I think we would be pretty dangerous if the coaches used the general philosophy that we're going for it on any 4th down between the opponent's 25 and 35. From the opponent's perspective, I would hate to have to defend this offense for four downs in that field position.

Knopick and Trumble to visit Iowa State.
Cody Mainquist / 2 hours ago

The Millard South duo have already put together impressive off seasons. Now they are being rewarded for their hard work and dedication. Knopick a Junior and Trumble a Senior will head to Ames this weekend to see what Coach Dresser and the Cyclone program is all about.

Conor Knopick is coming off a fifth place finish at Super 32. He also was the 55KG winner at UWW and represented the USA this summer as a World Team member on the Greco team. Conor went 6-2 at NHSCA Nationals held in Virginia Beach. Knopick was a third place finisher at last years State tournament, finishing with a 57-2 mark. As a Freshman, He was 51-4 and a fourth place finisher. He will look to capture state titles his final two years of high school competition. He is currently ranked 16th in the nation at 126 pounds by Flowrestling.

Isaac Trumble enters his Senior season coming off a state championship last year at 182 pounds, He had an unblemished season with a 56-0 record. Sophomore year, Trumble finished runner up with a 53-2 mark. As a freshman, he was 44-13 and finished in fifth place. This offseason has been a successful one for Trumble. Last week he finished in third at Super 32. He was 5-2 at NHSCA Nationals. At Fargo, he was a double All-American, finishing in fourth in freestyle and third in Greco. He is currently ranked #9 in the nation at 195 pounds by Flowrestling, and is #155 of the top 200 wrestlers in the class of 2020.

Watching B12 media days, here are rule changes ...

1. post play will be cleaned up - no more arm-barring off the post or bullying over the defender, Dok
2. traveling will be enforced particularly on the post and with step-back jumpers which effectively won't be allowed
3. defenders will not be allowed to undercut jump shooters
4. shooters will not be allowed to leg kick
5. flopping will be a foul - no more Wigg's head-bobs, sitting down on a charge, or Marcus Smart-like flopping after shot
6. piling on any player on the floor regardless the circumstances will be a foul
7. shot clock resets to 20-secs after offensive rebound
8. three-point line moved to international distance

CFP Projections

I started with the Top 20 teams in ESPN'S FPI and looked at ESPN'S projections for each remaining game including conference championships. Below is how each team is projected to finish. Order is based on final record:

1. Ohio St 13-0
2. Alabama 13-0
3. Clemson 13-0
4. Oklahoma 13-0
5. Oregon 12-1
6. LSU 11-1
7. Penn St 11-1
8. Notre Dame 11-1
9. Baylor 11-2
10. Florida 10-2
11. Georgia 10-3
12. Wisconsin 10-3
13. Utah 10-3
14. Auburn 9-3
15. Washington 9-3
16. Iowa St 9-3
17. Iowa 9-3
18. Michigan 8-4
19. USC 8-4
20. Texas A&M 7-5

Assume instead ISU were to win out and beat OU twice. We would be 11-2 and there would be chaos over which team deserved the 4th playoff spot.

6. Tyrese Haliburton, 6-foot-5 sophomore, Iowa State

Haliburton is one of my favorite players in the country to watch from courtside. You don’t get a sense of how valuable he is until seeing (and hearing) him up close. Last season he played almost perfect basketball and ended up third in the country in offensive rating (136.8). He did so always with a smile, being in the right spots and constantly communicating with his teammates, a rarity for a freshman.

The ball will be in his hands more now that Nick Weiler-Babb has graduated, and Haliburton showed what that could look like this summer playing for the United States in the U-19 World Cup. Haliburton averaged 7.9 points, 6.9 assists, shot 68.9 percent from the field and had a 6-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. His hard stats aren’t going to wow anyone, but Haliburton is an advanced stats all-star and a winner. My only concern is the awkward release on his jumper, but he keeps making them at a high rate, shooting 43.4 from 3 as a freshman and making 10 of 18 for the U-19 team.

Hawks in Lubbock

The wife and I went to Lubbock for the football game last weekend. We do road trips for some f'ball and b'ball games several times a year. It never fails that almost without exception, we will see a couple of Hawkeyes fans all decked out in black and gold, at the game. Can someone help me understand what's up with that. If they are going to go to watch good football, at least wear something a little less offensive.

Looks like Okie State's RFr QB, Sanders, has been struggling. 5 TD/9 INT in last five games.

ISU defense will need to step up and shut down RB Chuba Hubbard.

Here is how we fared against some of the conferences best rushers in 2018 (not named David).

Alex Barnes(KSU) ISU: 28 for 184/6.6 ypc
Pooka Williams(KU) ISU: 17 for 58/3.4 ypc
Trey Sermon(OU) ISU: 13 for 74/5.7 ypc
Justice Hill(OSU) ISU: 24 for 66/2.8 ypc

Barnes definitely got his, but we did good work against others (Sermon had Murray also).

What say you on Chuba?
