On That Note - Welcome to the Occupation

Hi and welcome to this week's On That Note. Each week one of us guys (@cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz or I) bring you a music column hoping you will all chime in with your contributions to the chosen topic.

Last week was: On That Note: Musical Compass, found here: https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-musical-compass.254197/

This week the topic is Occupation. The song lyrics, title or Artist must be the name of an occupation. The actual occupation name. NOT A Description of the work or duties of the job. For instance these two DO NOT COUNT:

I Write the Songs - Barry Manilow: He describes writing songs but never does the occupation "Songwriter" appear in the lyrics.
Working in a Coal Mine - Lee Dorsey: Again he describes working in the coal mine and several tasks but never does the word "Miner" appear.

My First Five:

So Long Frank Lloyd Wright - Simon and Garfunkel - Architect

The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel - Boxer (and Whores, if you want to call that an occupation)

Trial by combat against ex-wife in Iowa?

Very strange man.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...ordfight-settle-custody-battle-ex/4464045002/

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Kansas man asked an Iowa court to grant his motion for trial by combat, so he can meet his ex-wife and her attorney "on the field of battle where (he) will rend their souls from their corporal bodies."

David Ostrom, 40, of Paola, Kansas, claims in court documents that his ex-wife, Bridgette Ostrom, 38, "destroyed (him) legally."

He asked the Iowa District Court in Shelby County to give him 12 weeks' "lead time" to source or forge katana and wakizashi swords, according to the Carroll Times Herald.

Final Top 25...how the Big 12 fell (no surprise)

https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

Three Big 12 teams made the final Top 25. OU fell to #7 (down 3), Baylor fell five spots to 13 and Texas crept in at #25. OSU went from ranked to no votes. KSU barely mentioned with 2 votes. And no surprise...ISU disappeared into the mist of "what might have been."

Pretty weak showing overall, but the bowl results really weren't a surprise as none of the Big 12 were favored and some were outright mismatches. No surprises here.

Iowa State 2020 Pre-Season Top 10...

Think I want what McMurphy is drinking right now:

No. 10 Iowa State
Last year: 7-6 (lost to Notre Dame 33-9 in Camping World Bowl)
Schedule highlights: Sept. 12 at Iowa, Oct. 10 at Oklahoma State, Oct. 17 vs. Oklahoma, Nov. 7 at TCU, Nov. 14 vs. Baylor, Nov. 21 at Texas

There was nothing extraordinary about Iowa State’s 7-6 season in 2019. But it could have been so much better. Of the Cyclones’ six losses, three were by two points or less and another by seven points. Iowa State should be one of the Big 12’s — and the nation’s — surprise teams in 2020. The Cyclones return 14 starters this fall led by QB Brock Purdy, who led the Big 12 averaging 306 yards passing per game, and RB Breece Hall and WR Tarique Milton. Matt Campbell is considered one of the nation’s top coaches, and he’ll show why in 2020.

Sword Fight to Settle Divorce

First paragraph really gets right to it:
A Kansas man has asked an Iowa court to grant his motion for trial by combat so he can meet his ex-wife and her attorney "on the field of battle where (he) will rend their souls from their corporal bodies."

I initially assumed this guy (David Ostrom) had some mental health issues, but reading the full article, I'm pretty sure he's a genius.

Oscars 2020 - More Men, Please?

What a shock - no Greta Gerwig (or any other women) in the Best Director spot:

https://oscar.go.com/news/nominations/oscar-nominations-2020-list-nominees-by-category

Hot takes:

- Tarentino will get either his first best director, or his third best screenplay (tying him w/Woody Allen, I think?). I doubt he'll get both.
- Parasite almost has to get best international.
- Either 1917 or Once Upon A Time...for best picture
- They'll throw Gerwig a paltry bone for adapted screenplay

MLB Suspends Astro Mgr & GM For Cheating.

Holy crap; this seems kinda severe. I know electronic equip was used to steal signs, but stealing signs is as MLB as the 'BrushBack'. 1-yr suspension; $5 MM fine and 1st / 2nd round draft picks !

"..Major League Baseball dealt the most severe punishment against a team in its history Monday by suspending Houston Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch for a year for their role in using electronic equipment to steal signs, while fining the organization $5 million and stripping them of first- and second-round draft picks in 2020-2021....."
