Pedestrian Bridge

I knew the Athletic Department was planning a pedestrian bridge over University Boulevard, but I had no idea the bridge would extend all the way to the stadium's east concourse. That will be really nice for both the pedestrians and the cars!

This will be presented at the February Board of Regents Meeting:

Stadium gateway bridge

Athletics department officials will present to the board's property and facilities committee a request to begin planning a pedestrian bridge over University Boulevard east of Jack Trice Stadium. The project would include an elevated walkway all the way to the stadium's east concourse to create a safer pedestrian route between the stadium and parking, and enhance the south entry to campus. Its estimated cost, $8-12 million, would be funded with athletics department operating funds and private gifts.

Laptop recommendations/thoughts

It's getting time to retire the seven year old Toshiba Satellite, aka "The Brick". Been a faithful tool for seven years. Although it's not that I don't get mocked about it when I use it to stream games for local gamewatches.

Kinda narrowed down to 15" size +/- (used to that size screen) , 256GB SSD (based on how much space I used on The Brick), average RAM plus decent graphic card (not gaming or video editing), good higher end display. Kinda ruled out true 2 in 1's but would maybe like the touch screen. Will be using just as much as a computer as a media player/streamer. I do a lot of photo editing. Don't travel much or carry my computer with me during the day but lighter weight and longer battery life are on my check list.

Was thinking Dell XPS 15" or 13" (video display and compact/lightweight) put when I went to look at them in real life I hated the keyboards. Any of the newer keyboards will be an adjustment for me after years on my bigger work Dell and The Brick. So, thinking for sure 15" and with keyboard not as squeezed as the Dell XPS series. Also going to have to adjust to touch pad without the traditional mouse left/right button keys....almost no one issues laptops with those anymore.

Big10 AD's Transfer Proposal

Saw where Big10 AD's are proposing transfers be eligible immediately.

IMO the NCAA has created this situation by their arbitrary handling of transfer requests. But I don't think the Big10 AD's proposal is a good idea and basically creates unrestricted "free agency". I also feel it values the kid for their athletic ability ONLY.

With so many behind the scene hangers on (family, handlers, etc.), it creates a situation where elite programs will be able to recruit other college players. I think it would only be natural to see the NBA mentality of super teams happen in college sports. It also make conferences like the MVC, MAC, A10 the minor leagues for P5 conferences.

I am for loosening the rules, but I think there needs to be an academic element. I would propose:
  1. Give student athletes 5 years of playing time. Eliminate redshirts.
  2. I would require all transfers within the first 2 years of entering college to still have to sit a year.
  3. After the first 2 years a player can transfer and be eligible to play immediately. But I would include an academic progress component as well. Academic progress would be credit and GPA based on years in school. If a kid doesn't meet academic progress requirements they have to sit.
This would apply to all sports- Olympic and Revenue. No exceptions for family situations.

WBB: Donarski makes McD AA Game

Congrats to Lexi!

Caitlin Clark also made the team. This Register article about Clark making the team mentions a future Maryland player making the team but not Donarski.

EDIT: As posted below, there's a Register article on Donarski that came out at almost the same time I posted this

Not sure the notice of Rae Johnson starting is correct. I thought she was out a minimum of these two road games. Will find out at gametime I guess but thinking Thurmon likely starts.

Might be a tough go today with our short bench.

On That Note - Welcome to the Occupation

Hi and welcome to this week's On That Note. Each week one of us guys (@cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz or I) bring you a music column hoping you will all chime in with your contributions to the chosen topic.

Last week was: On That Note: Musical Compass, found here: https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-musical-compass.254197/

This week the topic is Occupation. The song lyrics, title or Artist must be the name of an occupation. The actual occupation name. NOT A Description of the work or duties of the job. For instance these two DO NOT COUNT:

I Write the Songs - Barry Manilow: He describes writing songs but never does the occupation "Songwriter" appear in the lyrics.
Working in a Coal Mine - Lee Dorsey: Again he describes working in the coal mine and several tasks but never does the word "Miner" appear.

My First Five:

So Long Frank Lloyd Wright - Simon and Garfunkel - Architect

NFL: ***Official Playoffs Thread***

How about just one thread for the entire postseason instead of weekly threads? The schedule for this weekend:

Saturday 3:30 - Bills @ Texans. I'm tempted to go with Buffalo in this one but I think they might still be a year away. Plus the Texans get a big boost from the return of JJ Watt.

Saturday 7:15 - Titans @ Pats. Give me the Pats. They've never looked more vulnerable but it'd be stupid to bet against them.

Sunday at noon - Vikes at Saints. I'll take New Orleans. They've looked great recently (albeit against some pretty bad competition) and you just can't trust Minnesota in a big spot.

Sunday at 3:30 - Seahawks at Eagles. Interesting game. Both teams have been ravaged by injury and received MVP-caliber play from their QBs.
