Friday OT #2 - Dumpster Diving

I got a $100 gift certificate to Target for a photography session I did for some friends. My boss and I were discussing yesterday how we both hate going into grocery stores and no stores. I mentioned that I have to hit up Target this weekend, and she reminded me it is move-in weekend for apartments. All those parents optimistically buying cleaning supplies…

What is your take on dumpster diving? Have you ever grabbed anything from the side of the road? What was it, and was it worth the experience?

I used to have a coworker in her upper 50s who made it a sport on move-out day to go through all the dumpsters in Campustown and grab stuff (really nasty pots and pans, etc). She would take the day off of her well-paying job to do it. The practice always struck me as a great way to contract hepatitis at her age!

NIL fund created for Texas Tech Lady Raider Basketball players

Different group than the one funding the football NIL but the Lady Raiders get the same payout, $25K annually. Smart to pay the same amount as football. I'm surprised the Lady Raiders NIL was announced before the mens basketball NIL, which I assume will happen. Anyway, the Lady Raiders were the first Tech team to win a NCAA team championship so there is a soft spot for them among many alumni.

Van Gorp

I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to play D1 volleyball at Iowa State University. I would like to thank God for blessing me with this amazing opportunity and my family and coaches for helping and supporting me along the way. Go Cyclones! ♥️

Concern About Race Discussion

I missed until today the story about South Carolina basketball player Aliyah Boston not initially getting an invite to the ESPYs and the media discussion that followed.

It was good to question why she didn't get invited, but what mostly got lost was that it appears that none of the nominees for both top male and female college athlete were invited based on a nomination for the award alone. I couldn't find any articles touching on this. I only saw a couple of replies to Aliyah's tweet about this that touched on this. It concerns me that there was such a lack of a full look at what happened.

  • Poll Poll
How Do You Express Time

You're picking up a friend at 4:45. What time do you tell them?

  • "Four Forty-Five"

    Votes: 100 67.1%
  • "Quarter To Five" (or some similar form)

    Votes: 48 32.2%
  • Other

    Votes: 1 0.7%

My 18 year old son HATES it when I tell time in terms of minutes before or after the hour such as, "We're leaving at a quarter to five" as opposed to, "We're leaving at four forty-five.". I think its related to the types of clocks we grew up with. I grew up with an analog clock. He grew up with a digital.

Kayden FIsh

Seems like a late bloomer. TJ must have seen him at Peach Jam and decided to pull the trigger. Sounds like the big dogs are starting to offer. Well Boston College anyway.

September 10 promises Big XII non conference mayhem with Texas hosting Alabama, Kansas State hosting Missouri, Baylor travelling to BYU, and CMC looking to end his curse at EIU. Other can't-miss games include West Virginia travelling to Top 10, long time rival Pitt on opening weekend, Oklahoma travelling to Nebraska on Sep 17 for the first time in many years, and Texas Tech travelling to N.C. State that same weekend.

Hot takes:
  • What non-conference games do you most look forward to?
  • And what matchups do you dread the most?

NOTES:
  1. The poll includes each team's highest ranked opponent. From the look of things, it may be difficult for us to break even.
  2. Some additional non-cons that will be great matchups include TCU @ Colorado on opening weekend, TTU @ Houston on Sep 10, WVU @ Va Tech on Sep 22, and KU vs Duke on Sep 24. I would love to have been able to include these in the poll, but ...
  3. The polling tool for this site limits us to only 10 choices. With 10 teams in the league, that works nicely. But as soon as next year we will not be able to have a poll like this unless the restriction is lifted. Please visit the Site Feedback and Support forum and chime in on / like my suggestion to loosen this restriction: Idea: Increase Poll Choice Limit to Match Big XII Conference Size

On That Note: Listen to the Brand

Welcome back to “On That Note,” CycloneFanatic's weekly go-to for music-listening and discussion, co-hosted by @MeanDean, @CycloneRulzzz and cyclones500.

For this segment, we explore songs with specific references to a product, brand, company, et. al. It may be part of the title or in the lyrics. If it’s lyrics-only, include the product/brand reference with your clip (optional: pinpoint the timestamp of occurrence).

Important: Generic references DO NOT COUNT (e.g., soda; car). Fictional example: Lyric referencing “grocery store” isn’t enough. Lyric referencing “Hy-Vee” — accepted!

Final note: Although it should be obvious, The following ARE NOT ACCEPTED: (1) Songs written specifically for a commercial (i.e., ad-jingles). (2) Commercials that incorporate pop songs. (OTN covered that with “Who Sells Out,” 2021)
My first couple of entries will come in a follow-up post, to get our branding underway.
