Friday OT #2 - Con Jobs

The Marty Tirrell thread got me thinking. Have you ever been successfully conned or tricked, particularly out of money?

One time in high school, I had a job as a cashier. I didn't know there was such a thing as a "quick change artist," particularly in Iowa. I've always had a tended to be overly polite, so I'm sure that I looked like the perfect target for this - here's an example: LINK

The guy came up at a time when we were overwhelmed with customers, did his transaction, and then started swapping out for change as I was helping someone else. I was super-busy and naive, and so I totally fell for it. He ended up conning us out of about $25 - and I felt like a total idiot after.

Verizon hotspot for home internet

Anybody do this, and if so how is it? We're thinking about buying a home out in the sticks where our only options for internet are satellite or hotspot. There is a cell tower with line-of-sight across the valley so 4G reception is great. My wife uses the internet to work from home, but only for downloading and uploading documents - no streaming. We will do some streaming from time to time, but we can get a dish/DVR to watch most shows.

CFTV and Chase Straw feature

Hello friends and happy Saturday.

I have a CFTV with Willie Miklus! He discusses tomorrows dual, what's next for him and talks about his role in the wrestling room.

Then, I also have this feature with Chase Straw! It was a good time to get to know more about him and his thoughts personally on his season so far.

WRESTLING WATCH PARTY: Thursday night at Whiskey River (ISU at UNI)

Join us Thursday night at Whiskey River in Ankeny as we're going to get Flo up on the TV's for some Cyclone Wrestling ... I really hope we have a decent turnout and we can start doing more of these. Figure it's a great opportunity to get some old guard wrestling fans mixed in with some newer, casual ones.

I set up a Facebook event here: Login to view embedded media

Good chance the state of Iowa gets 3 teams in

Hear me out here. Obviously the clones and hawks are going to get in but Drake is in first place in the MVC and playing well and after watching UNI the last few games they are peaking at the right time now too. Just beat the other team in first place in the MVC (Missouri State) by 20 @ Mo state last night. It will just take Drake or UNI to win Arch Madness and there are 3 teams in.

Living and dying on the defensive rebound

This team lives and dies on the defensive rebound. It is the #1 way to beat this team and the data supports this assertion.

1. This home loss vs. Baylor is frustrating to the same ilk as @iowa, @Baylor, KSU, and TCU. The common thread is the inability to get defensive rebounds.

2. If this team defensively rebounds at a rate ~70% or better this team will likely win most games it plays. For reference the best teams average defending rebound rate is around 80% and the worst is 65%. In summary, ISU only needs to be an average to slightly below average defensive rebounding team to win.

3. This is one the better defensive teams in sometime at ISU, but it has been slipping in defensive efficiency as of late. Often forgotten is that you end a defensive possession by getting a defensive rebound. Defensive rebounds is a major component of a defensive possession, and it happens to be ISUs glaring weakness.

4. Per KenPom, ISU's defensive efficiency is correlated around 65% to its defensive rebounding rate- which is a fairly significant correlation. FWIW no team in KenPom top 25 has as high of a correlation as ISU (ISU currently sits at #13 in KenPom).

ISU's success (AKA winning games) is majorly dependent on the ability (or lack there of) of getting defensive rebounds. Basketball can be pretty simple.

I could write much more on personnel adjustments, observations of player positioning, strategy of how many players to crash for defensive rebounds, but that may be for another day.

Campbell podcast

OK, I want to try to say this in the nicest way possible, but...I personally could not care less what Matt Campbell thinks about LeBron, Baker Mayfield, Mike Leach, the WWE, what restaurants he likes or what he has on his DVR. If I had an hour of one-on-one time with the coach, I would want to save the small talk for after the interview is done. I mean, my first thought would be...going into spring, how do they try to replace Willie Harvey? DeAndre Payne? Montgomery? Butler? Seonbuchner? Peavy? Maybe ask about the new FB facility...how much input did he have? What's he like about the plans? What are some of the cool things about the new building and how will it fit in with what they currently have?

There are tons of FB related questions to ask. Thoughts on 3-4 vs 4-3, evolution of Leo/Star positions, strength and weight gains, how the new FR are doing so far, who's participating at pro day, what they want to accomplish this spring, how the new coaches are settling in, who have been the leaders over the winter and who are potential captains.

I love CW's work and appreciate what this site does, but for as limited of access as we get, I just hate seeing time on a podcast "wasted" by asking about what TV shows the coach is binging. I understand that it's a fine line and it's great to have a friendly relationship with the HC...and that there's some value to fans being able to see what he's really like outside of the buttoned up press conference situations, but I feel like if the opportunity is there to ask more FB questions and less non-FB questions (like cut in half), that would make for an even better podcast.

I'm sure I'll get ripped up for this post, but I actually consider it constructive criticism.
