KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Anthony Echemendia and David Carr advanced into the semifinals Friday afternoon inside the T-Mobile Center. With their quarterfinal wins, Carr becomes Iowa State’s first five-time All-American while Echemendia earned his first-career honor.

Evan FrostCasey SwiderskiYonger Bastida all fell short in their quarterfinal matches and will wrestle in the blood round this evening with All-America status on the line. MJ Gaitan battled tough with a pair of wins on the back side and will also wrestle in the blood round.

The team race is only heating up on moving day with big points being awarded during Session III. Iowa State sits in fourth place with 42.0 points behind Arizona State (44.5), Michigan (50.5) and Penn State (86.5). Iowa sits only a half point behind with 41.5 while Ohio State has 36.0.

Kysen TerukinaCody Chittum and Will Feldkamp saw their seasons come to an end during the consolation rounds.

How it Happened
In a 133-pound quarterfinal, No. 8 Evan Frost took top-seed Daton Fix to the brink. The pair ended regulation deadlocked at, 1-1, and neither could muster a takedown in the sudden victory period. After Fix escaped in three seconds in the first 30-second tiebreaker, Frost chose neutral for the second and was in deep on a shot, but the position was called a stalemate with eight seconds remaining.

Echemendia was much the aggressor in his 141-pound quarterfinal match against NC State’s No. 4 Ryan Jack. Echemendia’s pace finally paid off in the second period when he received a stall point and registered a takedown to take a 4-2 lead into the final period. After an escape, Echemendia held off Jack’s rally for a 5-3 decision.

In a 149-pound quarterfinal, Swiderski was unable to finish his shots on several occasions as it was Ridge Lovett’s countering ability that had the upper hand. Lovett also amassed over two minutes of riding time as Swiderski fell to the blood round, 14-4.

Carr picked up his second victory of the season against Wisconsin’s Dean Hamiti in a 165-pound quarterfinal. The Cyclone, who beat the Badger 2-0 in November, made adjustments from their first meeting and finished on his first shot attempt. Carr was tough on top and cruised to a 5-0 victory to set up a rematch with his rival Keegan O’Toole in the semifinals.

Bastida gave up a takedown at the buzzer to Michigan’s Lucas Davison, falling to the blood round after a 6-4 defeat.

Gaitan secured bonus points in his first consolation match of the day, a 16-8 major decision over Rutgers’ Jackson Turley, before gutting out a 13-8 decision over Cal Poly’s Adam Kemp to advance into the blood round.
