RECRUITING: Phoenix Gill set for Iowa State visit Saturday

Iowa State is set to bring in a highly touted shooting guard from the 2025 class on a visit Saturday during its upcoming game against West Virginia.

Phoenix Gill, the 6-foot-2 prospect out of St. Ignatius High School, was planning on being in attendance for last Saturday’s game against Texas Tech, but a scheduling conflict prevented his mother from being able to go. Gill rescheduled his trip so that each of his parents could be in Ames alongside him.

“Yeah, (Iowa State is) definitely in my top tier right now,” Gill said. “Definitely top three, I would say. They’re huge to me. They reach out to me a lot. They just – they’re always in constant communication with me, and I think that that’s important to me and just shows that the school really wants me. I feel like they just show a lot of interest towards me and that’ll be good if I decide to go there down the road.”

Gill is rated as the No. 27 player in the country at his position, as well as the No. 4 prospect out of the state of Illinois.

Along with Iowa State, Gill holds offers from Illinois, Northwestern, Stanford, Toledo, and Valparaiso.

“That’s something Iowa State does really well,” Gill said of the communication between himself and the program. “Of course, I care about it. But I mean, it really just shows that they really want me and they they have a lot of interest in me. They’re a top level program that I would say does it really well. They’re one of two to three schools that are in constant communication, so I really enjoy that and it makes me want to go to the schools even more.”

Gill said Iowa State had solidified a spot in his figurative top three.

He also came away thoroughly impressed with the Cyclones’ defensive efforts during their game against No. 2 Houston on Big Monday.

“That defense is good, that’s what I want to say,” Gill said. “I mean, trapping everywhere, zoning up on the backside, just pressure – they just keep coming at you. And, I mean, it’s really evident in this game of course against Houston, but they’ve been doing it all season. It’s why they’re No. 6 in the country right now. They’ve been doing a lot of great things over there and I’m really enjoying how they’re playing this season.

“It’s really encouraging for me to see, knowing a school like this is recruiting me and putting a lot of interest in to me,” Gill said. “That really is good to see and I just love how they play.”
