Ashley Joens named as first female Bob Bowlsby Award winner

Former Iowa State Cyclone women’s basketball star Ashley Joens has been named as the first recipient of the Big 12 Conference’s Bob Bowlsby Award.

The honor, which was introduced by league commissioner Brett Yormark at Wednesday’s kickoff to Big 12 Media Days, is given to one male and one female athlete from the conference’s previous athletic season who exemplifies character and leadership on and off the field.

Joens, who is one of the most decorated athletes to ever play at Iowa State, is no stranger to awards.

She ended her career as the Big 12 Player of the Year, won three straight Cheryl Miller Awards, was a four-time all-Big 12 selection and a two-time all-American.

Max Duggan was the first male winner of the award.
