Iowa State forwards Javan Johnson and Terrence Lewis did enough to help MRG International outduel Cyclone freshman guard Tre Jackson and sophomore big man George Conditt‘s Waukee-Clive Vet Clinic to win the 2019 YMCA Capital City League title with a 115-109 win on Sunday night in West Des Moines.
Johnson, a sit-out transfer from Troy, scored a team-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting while grabbing five rebounds and dishing three assists. Lewis added 15 points on 5-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range, to go along with 12 rebounds.
Jackson, who was also named the league’s MVP on Sunday, poured in a game-high 24 points on 9-of-30 shooting, 6-of-19 from deep, with seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block. Conditt was dominant in the paint by scoring 22 points on 9-of-19 shooting, grabbing 12 rebounds, blocking four shots and also dishing out four assists.
Bolton electric in semifinal loss
While George Conditt and Tre Jackson came away with the win in Sunday night’s first semifinal contest, it was Iowa State sophomore guard Rasir Bolton who stole the show.
The transfer from Penn State scored a league season-high 63 points on 23-of-33 shooting from the field and 11-of-16 from deep while grabbing 12 rebounds, dishing five assists and snagging three steals for Walnut Creek YMCA.
Jackson solidified his status as the league’s MVP by scoring 40 points, including eight 3-pointers, and dishing out 13 assists in the 130-124 win. Conditt added 30 points and 11 rebounds of his own.
Johnson leads MRG International past Des Moines Outreach Lions Club
Javan Johnson poured in 38 points on 16-of-25 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to push MRG International in the league finals with a 112-102 win in Sunday’s second semifinal while Terrence Lewis added 27 points on 12-of-25 shooting as well.
Michael Jacobson stuffed the stat sheet with 35 points on 14-of-29 shooting, 11 rebounds and eight assists to just one turnover in the loss. Freshman guard Caleb Grill also added 14 points and four 3-pointers.
