Deonte Burton named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

 Deonte Burton‘s already made a big impact for ISU in just two games.

 Expect the trend to continue.

 Monday, the Big 12 Conference announced the 6-4 junior forward has been named the league’s Newcomer of the Week.

 Burton scored 12 points in 16 minutes in last week’s road win over Cincinnati. 

 The Milwaukee native was 5 of 6 from the field and hit a key 3-pointer.

Hield, Burton Capture Final Weekly Honors Of 2015

Irving, Texas – Big non-conference wins have rewarded Buddy Hield (Oklahoma) and Deonte Burton (Iowa State) with the final Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week for the 2015 calendar year. Hield is honored for the second time this season, while Burton earns accolades for the first time.

PHILLIPS 66 BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hield was named MVP of the Diamond Head Classic as the Sooners won three games in route to the title. The senior guard averaged 28.7 points and 6.7 rebounds, combining for a total of 86 points to set a new tournament scoring record. He set a career-high with 34 points in Friday’s championship game versus Harvard, his fourth 30-point outing of the year. Hield shot 60.5 percent (26-of-43) over the three games, including 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from 3-point range, while making 21-of-22 (.955) from the free throw line.  He has scored 25 or more points in five straight contests, the first Sooner to accomplish the feat since 1994-95 (Ryan Minor).

Burton helped the Cyclones record a big road victory with an 81-79 win at No. 22 Cincinnati. The junior guard, who became eligible a week ago after transferring to Iowa State, scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting in 16 minutes against the Bearcats. He connected on his only 3-point field goal attempt and also had an assist on a nifty bounce pass in transition to Monte Morris. Burton also added one rebound in route to his 17th career double-figure scoring effort.
