It’s hard to believe that we’re about to put a bow on another pick ’em season here at Cyclone Fanatic. Thanks to our pseudo-experts for playing along all season. For many of us, documenting or inept picks for all of the world (or Story county) to see does require some bravery.
Our fearless leader, Chris Williams, selected 13 bowl games to settle the score once and for all in 2014 (unless we do something freaky with the National Title game…then make it 14 bowl games) and our line of experts have made their picks.
Some may be mathematically eliminated from the championship, but that doesn/t mean that pride isn’t a huge factor for these Lee Sterling wanna-be’s. Jeff Woody has a very solid, if not commanding lead over the field. But Hassel and a few others are still within striking distance.

When in doubt, pick 1) Team talent and execution 2) the team that wants to be there more, and 3) The team playing a Big Ten team. Also, bowl games are a bit of a crap shoot since there are a bunch of variables that have to come together, plus you’ve only seen teams play in conference for 3 months now.
Holiday Bowl: Nebraska vs. USC (-6.5) – So, this is interesting. If you’re playing the ‘who wants it more’ game, Nebraska would probably have the advantage in the ‘win one for Bo.’ However, this Nebraska team is 1-3 in their past 4 bowl games, and those 3 losses weren’t close. Add that to the fact that USC has more talent (Pac 12>B1G), I think Nebraska comes out firing, but USC ends up running away with this one.
Liberty Bowl: West Virginia (-3.5) vs. Texas A&M – Trickett will play. With a healthy Trickett, this team can score with the best of ’em. And A&M can’t stop a nosebleed in an offensively limited conference in the SEC. Good luck with a team focused on offense. West Virginia.
Russell Athletic Bowl: Clemson vs. Oklahoma (-3) – Does OU care? Nope. Does it matter because they are miles ahead of Clemson? Nope. OU.
Texas Bowl: Texas vs. Arkansas (-6) – Complete toss-up for me. For the sake of it still being a rivalry (sort of), I think this game will be a close one. I’ll take Texas to cover, but not confident.
Music City Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU (-7.5) – I don’t think Notre Dame has the ability to NOT turn the ball over. I’m always of the mind that if you turn the ball over to a ball-control offense, you dig yourself a sharp hole. 7.5 is a lot, but I think it is going to be coverable by the Tigers. LSU.
Peach Bowl: Ole Miss vs. TCU (-3.5) – Only 3.5? Really? Ok, TCU is a bit of a mystery to those not familiar with the Big XII. Ole Miss is the model of inconsistency. The way you slow down TCU is to put pressure on Boykin, keep him in the pocket, and hope to cover their wideouts. I don’t think this is going to happen. Bo Wallace will turn it over to the team that is +18 in turnover margin. Give me the Frogs.
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State (-7) – This is interesting to me. Georgia Tech is really difficult to stop unless you’re disciplined. Mississippi State is that. Also, Ga Tech is 1-8 in bowl games since 2005. I’ll take the Bulldogs to cover.
Outback Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Auburn (-6.5) – Oh man, Ohio State embarrassed the Badgers, and now they get to play the same team again!? Not good for Bucky. War Damn Eagle
Cotton Bowl: Michigan State vs. Baylor (-3) – It’s in Dallas, against a B1G team, and Baylor is a team who’s got something to prove. Mich St is good at playing man coverage and all, but they aren’t good enough to match up 1 through 5 with Baylor. Bears win big.
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Arizona (-3.5) – QB controversy abounds in Flagstaff. Long live the little man! Boise to cover.
TaxSlayer Bowl: Iowa vs. Tennessee (-3.5) – Wanna talk about teams not wanting to be there? Iowa doesn’t give two s**** about this game. Tennessee sold their entire allotment of tickets within a few days. Iowa generally does prepare well for bowl games, but this might be like pulling teeth. Vols.
Alamo Bowl: UCLA vs. Kansas State (-1) – I want to pick K State, but I don’t have a ton of confidence either way. So I am gonna pick K State and hope the Mr. Hyde shows up instead of Dr. Jekyll for the Bruins.
Cactus Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Washington (-5.5) – Oklahoma State is just not mature enough to handle a bowl trip. Huskies.
PLAYOFF
Rose Bowl: Florida State vs. Oregon (-9) – Nine points in the Rose Bowl might not be enough. This Oregon team is my national title favorite. The one thing that worries me about this pick is how well Dalvin Cook has played for the Noles. The way you beat Oregon is to get a lead and play ‘ground and pound’ football. IF that happens and IF they are able to sustain it, FSU could pull off the upset. I really don’t see that happening. I think the Ducks win by two touchdowns.
Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs. Alabama (-9.5) – Is there anything that still needs to be said about this? Yea OSU wants to prove a point, but so does Bama. OSU gets waxed in this one. Bama by 21+, and after either Baylor and/or TCU beats up on their competition, the "YOU MADE THE WRONG CHOICE!!" talk comes to a screaming volume.

Texas Bowl: Texas vs. Arkansas (-6) – Arkansas by 7.
Music City Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU (-7.5) – Notre Dame has plummeted since their heartbreaking loss to FSU. I like LSU to win by 13.
Peach Bowl: Ole Miss vs. TCU (-3.5) – I never trust a team in a bowl game who had higher hopes going into the least week of the season. Thus I can’t pick TCU. Ole Miss wins outright.
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State (-7) – MSU has a month to plan for GT’s triple option. That’s a long time for a good coach like Mullen. MSU by 20.
Outback Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Auburn (-6.5) – Wisconsin can run the ball and Auburn can’t stop anyone. I like Auburn to win, but Wisconsin to cover.
Cotton Bowl: Michigan State vs. Baylor (-3) – I think Baylor struggles early against MSU’s physical defense but gets it figured out and wins by 4.
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Arizona (-3.5) – Arizona by 30.
TaxSlayer Bowl: Iowa vs. Tennessee (-3.5) – Tennesse by 4.
Alamo Bowl: UCLA vs. Kansas State (-1) – Bill Snyder hasn’t been a great bowl game coach, and I have a feeling Woody is taking KSU, so I will go with UCLA to win a close one.
Cactus Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Washington (-5.5) – I know nothing about this Washington team. I’ll take OSU to cover.

Rose Bowl: Florida State vs. Oregon (-9) – Florida State can score on Oregon, especially with the Ducks losing their best player in the secondary. But Mariota is to good to lose this game. Ducks win by 3.
Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs. Alabama (-9.5) – I’d take OSU if Barrett was playing, but a 3rd string QB against a Nick Saban coached defense that has had a month to prepare for him? Look out. This is going to get ugly. Alabama by 24.

Peach Bowl: Ole Miss vs. TCU (-3.5) – TCU got robbed in the national playoff. Either they are down and dont show up, or they have something to prove. Ill take Gary Patterson any day with a month to prepare. TCU covers.
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State (-7) – Interesting matchup between ACC and SEC. With several weeks to prepare, the GT triple option is not as scary. MSU by 10 to cover.
Outback Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Auburn (-6.5) – What the heck happened in Madison. From Big 10 contender to getting run out of the Big 10 championship to Anderson leaving for Oregon State! Auburn covers over that disaster.
Cotton Bowl: Michigan State vs. Baylor (-3) – The most interesting game of the entire bowl season (save the Playoff). Defense vs. offense. Gut tells me that a month to prepare for Baylor would favor the MSU defense. Heart goes with the Big 12. Bears cover.
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Arizona (-3.5) – Arizona has a chance to cap off a great year under Rich Rod. Boise isn’t what they have been in the past. Zona Bears Down and covers.
TaxSlayer Bowl: Iowa vs. Tennessee (-3.5) – UT by 7 to cover.
Alamo Bowl: UCLA vs. Kansas State (-1) – Another big game for the reputation of the Big 12. This bowl season has a lot of implications for future playoffs for the Big 12. Must win this and TCU and Baylor. I have the Wildcats to cover.
Cactus Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Washington (-5.5) – Oklahoma State vs. Washington (-5.5) OSU coming off a huge win in Norman. I have the Cowboys to cover.

Rose Bowl: Florida State vs. Oregon (-9) – Hopefully somebody finally exposes FSU for the fraud they are. The Ducks are the team to do it. Ducks easily cover.
Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs. Alabama (-9.5) – This is a very interesting game that will come down to the quarterbacks. Sims has been great at times, but hasnt had this spotlight. I think it comes down to wire, Buckeyes cover.

Holiday Bowl: Nebraska vs. USC (-6.5) – Things are rough in L.A. right now for the former Director of Dunk City, Andy Enfield, but even though Nebraska lost to Incarnate Word they’re good enough to hang around.
Liberty Bowl: West Virginia (-3.5) vs. Texas A&M – Huggins has it rolling. WVU.
Russell Athletic Bowl: Clemson vs. Oklahoma (-3) – All I know is Buddy Hield is for real and no fan base outside of Norman, Oklahoma can not not hate Ryan Spangler. OU.
Texas Bowl: Texas vs. Arkansas (-6) – We saw Arkansas up close in Hilton, the Texas bigs are too much as they cover and win outright.
Music City Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU (-7.5) – All I know about these teams is that Notre Dame just throttled Purdue and Texas Tech lost at LSU in overtime…so, let’s take the Golden Domers.
Peach Bowl: Ole Miss vs. TCU (-3.5) – TCU just beat the Rebels on the road a couple of weeks ago by a score of 66-54. I see no reason why they can’t do it again.
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State (-7) – The only thing I know about these two teams is that the MSU head coach played college basketball with my high school coach. By associataion that hurts his chances (kidding), but, I’m still taking Tech.
Outback Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Auburn (-6.5) – Can’t stop Frank the Tank. Wisconsin.
Cotton Bowl: Michigan State vs. Baylor (-3) – Michigan State just lost to Texas Southern at home. Baylor.
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Arizona (-3.5) – Even though Arizona just lost to UNLV I can’t pick Boise State. There are rules against that.
TaxSlayer Bowl: Iowa vs. Tennessee (-3.5) – REVENGE MATCH FROM THE PLAY-IN GAME. I want to say Woodbury converts a field goal for the win, but, nahhh….Rocky Top.
Alamo Bowl: UCLA vs. Kansas State (-1) – UCLA only scored one touchdown in the first half against Kentucky last week and allowed 41 points. I’m sticking with the Wizard.
Cactus Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Washington (-5.5) – Coach Otz! Huskies.

Music City Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU (-7.5) – Les Miles will probably do some line dancing at some point during the week. LSU 28 Notre Dame 21.
Peach Bowl: Ole Miss vs. TCU (-3.5) – TCU 27 Ole Miss 21.
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State (-7) – The Georgia Tech offense makes me think of car phones and Nintendo games. That’s worth a cover. Mississippi State 28 Georgia Tech 24.

Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Arizona (-3.5) – This isn’t a great Boise team in my mind, no statue of liberty plays this time around. Arizona 34 Boise State 20.

Russell Athletic Bowl: Clemson vs. Oklahoma (-3) – This has a chance to be one of the better games in the bowl season, a ton of talent on both sides. I like the Sooners to cover
Texas Bowl: Texas vs. Arkansas (-6) – This is going to be a low scoring physical type of game. I like Arkansas to win the battle in the trenches, that will be he most important thing to watch in this game. Arkansas
Music City Bowl: Notre Dame vs. LSU (-7.5) – This one won’t even be close. ND will be lucky to score. LSU big
Peach Bowl: Ole Miss vs. TCU (-3.5) – TCU will have its work cut out here, but I like TCU trying to prove their point they are the best team in the country
Orange Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Mississippi State (-7) – A month to prepare for the triple option is plenty of time, Miss St rolls.
Outback Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Auburn (-6.5) – Auburn has too much speed for Wisconsin, the Badgers will slow the game down but not enough. Auburn
Cotton Bowl: Michigan State vs. Baylor (-3) – Baylor will be ready for this game, big geographic advantage for the Bears too. Rhythm is everything at this point in the year and the Bears closed their season at a high level. Baylor
Fiesta Bowl: Boise State vs. Arizona (-3.5) – This line puzzles me, Boise isn’t the Boise of past meaning not as good as they have traditionally been. Arizona
TaxSlayer Bowl: Iowa vs. Tennessee (-3.5) – Capt. Kirk is one of the best bowl prep coaches around. I think Tennessee wins but Iowa covers.
Alamo Bowl: UCLA vs. Kansas State (-1) – This is another game that has the potential to be an outstanding game, give me K state as a big 12 homer.
