Wrestling Program - What's Needed?

The instate tuition thing is a good idea but it would have to be extended too all non revenue sports and I'm not sure the AD budget is equipped to handle that.

Also, if we do it, Iowa will also be doing it. Not sure we want to go there.

What we need is a coach who's proven to develop talent and can recruit.

There's been a lot of talk on this board on the improved talent in the room overall. Looking at our performances in opens I question the validity of that. No champs and only one runner up at the Duhawk Open? I know people aren't going to like this but for comparison sake, Iowa had 6 champs and 2 runners up. 7 of those guys are true frosh and 1 is a RS frosh.

I look at that and truly feel the gap is widening.

Sorry, I have been on a mission trip for 10 days.

Our facilities and budget is fine. As far as coaches, I am not 100% sure because I do not get to the room much.

Mat wrestling needs to get better.

My only thought on coaches is, I don't want to change just to change. Look at UNI coach Schwab. He is one year behind KJ in coaches tenure at UNI and Moore, Krumweide, Caldwell and the team as a whole is struggling. And they are suppose to be out recruiting us for 4 years now, what happen? Not picking on UNI, but there are a lot of coaches with hype, but not a proven track record.

If a young coach, like Taylor, Burrough, Dake, etc would come along, I would be willing to take a chance. But not sure until somebody like that is available.

I thought about Troy N as a head coach and keeping TP1 & TP2, and maybe bring in another or keep Angel.
I really don't know the answer, but don't want to lose the best recruiting talent we recruited for awhile.

A lot of wisdom in this post. The reality is that a top 6-7 program at ISI is going to take a top 6-7 coach, and I'm not sure who that person would be right now. Best available is not necessarily going to be good enough. Rolling the dice now could make us unavailable when that person emerges. The only guy I'm on the fence about is Cody Sanderson. At some point, a big time school is going to pick him up as HC.

would elevating one of the paulsens to HC and trying to pull Varner as an assistant an option after the olympics?

No on the Paulsons they are in the room now and the team has not improved. We need a coach outside of ISU a coach that will push the kids in the room. Have you seen the team on the mat we need attitude and toughness on the mat. I wrestled at ISU in the early 90s and the toughness is gone from the program.[h=1][/h]

Couldn't not agree more. For me, it's almost painful to watch to see how much difference there is between us and a top program. I'm interested to see what happens this year. A couple good donors that I know of are wanting changes made and are voicing there opinions to Pollard.

I know it'd be a flyer but I've said for awhile that we should make a play for Dake, Burroughs, or Taylor. Why not?

Timing of that would be tough, since they won't be available until almost the start of fall semester (though you could alleviate that with an associate head coach running the program until then). And there's no guarantee any of them are ready to retire from competition. Varner is the only one who I think will almost for sure be available.

Seems rather shortsighted to say only a proven, "top 6-7 coach" can come to ISU and win. Tom Ryan didn't magically become a top 6-7 coach just last season. Cael wasn't when he started at ISU, nor Brands at Iowa. Was Popolizio a top 6-7 coach when he took over at NC State? (There's a name for everyone.)

Still one of the 10 best jobs in the country in terms of salary, fan attendance, history. Those kind of jobs don't open up very often.

This. 1000 times this. Crazy how low people have set expectations despite the above.

I wasn't trying to imply that a person needs to be leading a top 6-7 program currently. That person might look like a head coach of a smaller program getting coach of the year nominations or #1 recruiting classes like Popo, Brands, or Tom Ryan.

Or a guy presiding over a top 5 program like that other guy.

They might be tempted after completion of the 2016 cycle. Why not try? Still one of the 10 best jobs in the country in terms of salary, fan attendance, history. Those kind of jobs don't open up very often.
yeah sorry I was on the mobile when I did my reply and should have one into a little bit more detail. I wouldn't have any problem extending an offer to them at all. However I think the only one that would consider hanging it up is B but just have a weird feeling his tie to Nebraska is extremely strong and them making a move at him when the time comes. Taylor and Dake I doubt are ready to hang it up. Taylor I doubt would anyways with his strong ties to Cael unless he was going to use ISU to get to PSU.

Maybe we can borrow our new oline coach who makes guys tough.

observation over last two years - KJ seems frustrated that guys will not attack - I think that is a culture issue coming out of the wrestling room (asst coaches need to step up here) the second part it the pre-match rub down has got to stop - the team seems more motivated prior to the match starting
