Will Prohm ever win a championship?

That preseason ranking assumed a healthy Mitrou-Long. McKay's discipline issues cost that team some wins, too. While I think it's fine to pin that on something Prohm has to manage, I don't know the story.

If Naz had been out the start of the season, it's likely that team is outside the top 12 preseason, which means a #4 seed matches that expectation.

I'm interested to see what ISU teams did not underachieve in your opinion. By your standards I have to believe every team of Orr's underachieved. Probably all of Floyd's as well. The three years Larry missed the tourney have to be considered underachievements as well. 8 and 10 seeds and not making it out of the first weekend in Fred's second and third years have to be. Royce, Babb, Tyrus, Ejim, Allen, Scotty C., Clyburn, Lucious etc. over the course those two seasons is too much talent to be sneaking into the tournament, right? Fred's last year had too much talent to be losing in the first round for sure right? Seems like the past 75 years of basketball is three good seasons and 72 that either sucked or at least underacheived.

To be fair, I thought that Prohm was being a big selfish meany when he made McKay actually practice...

I know Cameron can be dominant on the boards and blocking shots when "good Lard" shows up, and Jacobson has added a lot to his game since his tenure in Lincoln.

However, Lard still struggles to not foul (which is a function of positioning) and Jacobson, while quite good against teams with smaller posts in the non-conference, has had more of the same difficulties he had in the Big Ten against Big 12 bodies.

Solomon is their height but 20 pounds more of muscle. We could sure use that about now. I was excited to see what he could do as a junior, which is when big men really develop.

Honestly, Solomon, as that big rock/anchor in the middle, might have been the best "system" fit of the three to start and play alongside the four-guard style if he was healthy.

Morris
Mitrou-Long
Thomas/Jackson
Burton
Young

...worked really well for Solomon doing exactly what you said. He played good positional defense down low, was tough and physical, clogged the lane with a big body, created space by boxing out and setting screens, never had a play ran for him and occasionally cleaned up some trash on the boards, and accepted this auxiliary role without even thinking about it.

We have a lot of chuckers on the perimeter. We need a team guy out there like that.

Swapping out the guards above for the ones now...

Weiler-Babb
Haliburton
Horton-Tucker/Wigginton
Shayok
Young

...would have probably worked pretty nicely.

Completely agree, especially in games with bigger posts like Baylor, Tech, and even TCU where we need a wider body.

Something that'll spark curiosity for next year, and I'm not saying it'll happen, but what about a lineup like this:

Haliburton
Wigginton
THT
Conditt or even Jacobson
Young

There's length there, some speed for slashing, size both for rebounding and defense, and guys who can still space the floor if need be. It's a little shaky on shooting, but could maybe work as an alternative lineup.

CW had the following for the starting lineup next season...

https://cyclonefanatic.com/2019/01/midweek-mailbag-cw-takes-a-crack-at-your-questions/

Haliburton
Nixon
Horton-Tucker
Conditt
Lard

...which is a similar idea to yours minus Wigginton (must be going pro) swapped out for Nixon but still focusing on having a stretch big man at the 4.

We are losing so much from our guards that I think we have to change our style back to playing two big men, even if the 4 is some sort of hybrid like that.

Jacobson, Lard, Young, and Conditt are going to be too good to only play one of them.

Yeah, because programs with #3 seeds in consecutive years have no shot whatsoever of making a Final Four anytime soon with the same coach and that coaches ability to pull in top talent.

You're a complete idiot if you didnt think this program had any shot of making a Final Four with Hoiberg. I even remember experts picking us as trendy Final 4 picks, but you know more than experts right?

You mean the trendy year where our guys decided they would dye their hair and think they were the better team simply by name on the jersey and didn't have to show up for?

They still weren't great defensively.

My standard is the regular season primarily. Regular season conference title is the crown jewel. That is better in my mind than anything other than a Final 4. So when a team goes 12-6 or 13-5 in the conference then I’m not going to call the season a failure if they get bounced in March.

I said the same thing with the 16-17 squad after they got to 12-5 before the WV regular season finale. No matter how that season ended it would be a success. I’ve been consistent on my views about that.

Good post. Your standard is straight....do well in the regular and that is better than anything but a final four. And it seems the bottom unless I read it wrong is 12-6 in the conference. Well....unless they win out, then by your standards this season can be considered a failure regardless of if they win the conference tourney or even make it all the way to the elite eight. IMO, that seems a miserable way to take in a winning season but more power to you.

You write this, but then continue to crap on the Sweet 16 team because they won 10 conference games instead of 11 and didn't beat a 5 seed to get to the Sweet 16. Make. Up. Your. Mind. Be. Consistent!

Whatever fits his narrative man. That is his boner for Fred is showing. He needs to tuck it into his belt when he comes around here.

Ahh yeah, never saw that article so kind of interesting to me. I think Conditt and Jacobson would be a good hybrid 4 while Lard and Young work in and out on the 5. Wonder if Talley would ever develop an outside game?

Talley is a senior.

If you go 12-6 or 13-5 in the conference that is an unmitigated success. A team at 11-7 or 10-8 could be a success depending on the Big 12 tourney and NCAA tournament. I’m just saying if you go 12-6 it is a successful season no matter what happens. Teams show how good they are over 33 games not for two weeks in March.

If you don't know why Hoiberg was able to attract top transfer talent I seriously question whether you lack the basic knowledge on college basketball to be posting on this board.

I have about an hour and a half before bedtime. It'll help me sleep better if you just tell me.
