Original article and others have mentioned the means disparity.
Are parents allowed to redshirt their kids whenever they want? Can I make my kid retake 7th grade for no reason?
Not sure. I know a few schools will fight it. Most that I know either moved their kid for a year, or home schooled.
I have one son (July bday) and one daughter (Aug bday), both were older in their grade. I think it helped both of the significantly academically and athletically. They are both young adults now with Iowa State degrees.
Schools may not like it, but if the parent wants it, the school has no choice but to go along with hold the kid back.
To the OP, with boys it's my belief that it's better to hold them back, that extra year at home allows them to mature some more and allows them to get physically stronger when they get into school.
Our two sons had August and Sept. birthdays, and both were held back the extra year at home. Best decision we could have made.
Right? This is a $30k+ move for Team KnappShack if we keep both boys back a year.

I worked in an elementary it was my experience that they would typically let a kid who was academically or socially delayed repeat kindergarten and after that barring huge attendance issues or something they passed everyone on. And even repeating kindergarten I only saw it 3 times in 7 years. We did have a mom sign her kid up for 2nd grade for a 2nd time because she didn't know he should have been in 3rd but that was another issue.
I remember reading about Texas parents having their prospective athletes repeat 7th grade because starting in 8th grade their clock started ticking for athletic participation and if they repeated a grade after that they wouldn't be able to participate their senior year.
Dumbest thing I ever heard but, you know, Texas football.
If your kid needs to have that extra year to get their Div 1 scholarship they probably aren't going to do much in college when the other kids are catching up to them in age.
Growing up all my friends in my grade were nearly a whole year older than me. Really felt it in Jr high. Puberty was rough.Just curious what CF parents have decided. Thinking about it a bit early but will have this decision.
Heard someone say they've never heard anyone say the regret holding their kids back. Think its all the more true for boys.
We're in the same situation. 2 years and 2 days apart.
Just told Mrs KnappShack that we should redshirt the oldest and put the younger boy in right at 5.
They'd be only 1 grade apart. A perfect science experiment.

I thought I’d coined the RS phrase for kids several years ago. I used the term, because I honestly think it was often used for sports. I later learned that our school also advised that boys with summer birthdays wait. It took me a while to figure out why my boys were the youngest on their school and travel teams...they have February and March birthdays!
I've seen redshirting in wrestling since my youngest started the sport when he was 4. He is now 22, and I'm not thinking it miraculously started that year. It was even called that then.
Three of our boys are mid to late summer bdays. No redshirts and no problems. All in high school now.
There's a prominent wrestling family in the state that's doing that very thing right now to line him up better with the '32 Olympics...
