What is realistic for Texas to average going forward?

Texas not playing well in the sandbox goes back even further than the Big 12 and SWC.
Before joining the Southwest Conference in 1914 they were a charter member of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1909. They weren't in the conference more than a couple of years before they insisted that all of the smaller schools in the conference play their matchup with Texas in Austin (sounds familiar to those who know Cy-Hawk history, doesn't it?). They ended up bolting along with A&M and Baylor from the TIAA to form the SWC in 1914.

I have to say, I've really enjoyed these last several years of DumpsterFire Texas way more than that of competitive Texas. Patterson working with that defense can't be good for the rest of us. That said, I will assume Texas isn't back until...they are actually back. If it happens, may it be when they are long gone from the Big12.

Texas ran up nearly $280,000 tab for recruiting visit by Arch Manning, 8 others
The Longhorns spent nearly $630,000 over two recruiting weekends in June, including almost $280,000 on the official visit by quarterback Arch Manning and eight other recruits that featured five-star accommodations and virtually all-you-can-eat fare.

The money won’t make them any better at all and can only make them worse.
They’ve already made more money than any other program the vast majority of the past 10-15 years.
It’s just a question of if they can do culturally what Ohio St, Alabama, Clemson and now Georgia have done as elite programs that consistently play hard.

Exactly. The more accomodations they give to their players, the softer they have become. Tough to go to the weight room when you've got an X-Box in your locker
I can see them winning 8-9. They have the size, talent, etc. Especially if Ewers returns or Card can hold it together. Its always been the culture and a lack of sound planning and execution that has held them back - if they get that part finally figured out they could be pretty decent
I don’t know, could also be a glimpse into why they have been the softest team in American sports. It helps bring in the talent but probably hurts forging the talent.
In pro sports there are luxuries but unless you’re a super star the locals don’t treat you like a living god as often as college football players. Think Chicago Bull Matt Thomas walking around that city as a totally normal guy now vs a random freshman or sophomore Texas football player in Austin or Nebraska players over years in Lincoln.
Somebody said he had nagging injury. Hope their point guard doesn’t have nagging injury at Hilton.
Texas being legally allowed to use their money to buy players is a game changer for them. NIL is going to make them relevant. The issue is that everyone else in the SEC has money and talent too. Their overall record will continue looking mediocre. Ohio State looks much smarter to me, they've found a way to keep up with cash while keeping their competition terrible.
