What did you do with your first paycheck?

I'm amazed at how many people remember what they did with theirs. My guess is I probably bought groceries or paid rent? Something to do with helping me survive life?

And not to be that old fart guy, but I do second the retirement thing. As soon as you're eligible for a 401k plan, do it, and put at least your max amount in that your company will match. You'll be amazed by how much you'll make and save, all for maybe 30 bucks a paycheck that you won't even realize you're missing.

took me a couple weeks to get signed up for mine - so probably my 2nd or 3rd I started putting some into my 401k.

I spent it on a gilt. That gilt laid down, had 4 pigs, ate one then died of an infection. Sound investment.

I remember because I was virtually broke for the month or two before it arrived. I even remember borrowing $100 from a brother to get by.

It was January and I needed a good winter coat. By the time I got the check the weather broke and I instead bought a spring/fall jacket at Penney's in the Muscatine Mall. Tan with zipper front. Wore it for many years until the zipper broke and it got a few good stains on it. After that I only wore it to rake leaves or other grimy jobs.

When I retired I told the story of my first check, showed my pay stub, and wanted to bring the jacket to show, but looked everywhere but could not find it. I thought maybe I did throw it away when I moved. Sure enough, the next day after I retired I found it.

I was 15.....guessing i did something stupid with it. Should have taken it and bought some aapl stock

Mine came from an NFL team but it was nowhere near what you all read in the press
that NFL players get.Still it seemed like a fortune and I bought a car and paid off my my Moms house.

I drove the same car for a lot of years.I still bring it to tailgates.... as some of you know.

Not sure what I did with my first "real" paycheck, but then again the line of demarcation isn't all that clear for me. I started working my first full time job my senior year in high school. My guess is it went into something stupid like car or home audio equipment. I bought one of the early DVD players around that time for 500 bucks. I use to be on a first name basis with the guys at Ultimate Electronics on Merle Hay.

But I remember real well what my very first paychecks went to. I wanted a nintendo in the worst way, and my dad told me I would have to get job to pay for it. I was around 8 years old, so me and my buddy got a paper route and I saved for five months to get it. Not sure if I've made a better or more satisfying purchase since.

Yeah, pretty much this. My observation, your first paycheck only seems important from the college side. I honestly have a feeling that because of rent, deposit, utility deposits, yadda, yadda, yadda...I probably just spent the rest on food/beer.

But, in the end, it's your money, but the 'big' thing you do to celebrate your first paycheck might well seem silly to you in a few years when you're taking home what you grossed in your first year.

It wasn't exactly the first paycheck, but after graduating and getting a "real" job... set up house for the wife and kid, boring stuff. But did buy a brand new car - 1994 Dodge Neon. Oh yeah, they saw me rollin; they was hatin.

Will never buy a new car again, just used from here on out. Worst financial decision of my life, if you don't count marriage.

Count me in the group that used his first paycheck to survive.

I remember leaving Ames with less than $50 in my pocket and bank account.

I really needed that first check.
