Is Hunky Dory's the one down by Racquet and Fitness that's now Hickory Hall?? I think I was in Hunky Dory's exactly once in high school. And I think it was WAAAAY nicer than that place down on South 5th that I'm remembering... what was the freaking name?

Is Hunky Dory's the one down by Racquet and Fitness that's now Hickory Hall?? I think I was in Hunky Dory's exactly once in high school. And I think it was WAAAAY nicer than that place down on South 5th that I'm remembering... what was the freaking name?
Through my good fortune I knew a lot of people who worked there and spent a good share of time there. I didn't like country music at the time, but it was all good. They did seem to have a lot of high school girls in there, though.
I am AMAZED people answered his questions with honesty and sincerity. Say what you will about us drinking the kool-aid and always hating Kansas, but we are good people.
Welch is definitely within walking distance of Hilton. It isn't even a mile away. Walking from Welch back to the hotel would probably be a bit much though.
But it is the first night back in school so the crowd is going to be a bunch of undergrads. You'd probably have more fun if you head to Main Street. Still will be people around but more of a grad school/townie crowd. That isn't easily walkable though, and taxis can be tough to come by in Ames.

I will second (or more) the Dublin Bay choice. My family goes here before every home game, whether for dinner like last week before Baylor, or just a beer or two depending on what time we can all get out of Iowa City. As the name suggests, it's kind of a Irish pub-style bar with a separate dining area as well. Mostly typical bar food, but some "nicer" stuff too.
If you want pizza, Great Plains is by far the best in Ames. I could eat GP every day, I would weigh 400 lbs, but it would be OK.

The Fox 1 Lounge. It was closed after the last flooding. If you drank the tap beer, you were going to feel like crap the next day whether you had 1 glass or 3 pitchers. On Wednesday nights many of the Ag kids would go for the $5 for 3 pitchers of beer special.
I am ashamed I forgot the name. I always wondered if there was a Fox 2, thereby necessitating the 1 in "Fox 1."
Can the people who are going to be able to be at the game do me a favor please? If ISU does happen to lose - heaven forbid - please, please, please make sure you start a Cyclone Power or some other mass participation chant at the appropriate time to drown out that Rock Chalk Jayhawk chant. That has no business ever being heard in Hilton even at games where our Cyclones get blown out. If they can hear it on TV, it is our fault, not the visiting Kansas fans' fault.
Hickory Park is great, just keep in mind you might have to wait for a table and they don't take reservations.
It's kind of like fattening up the pig before you lead them to slaughter kind of thing....

Nor are they plentiful. Your hotel might offer shuttle, if you pay the right employee.
