I don't support what the kids did, but I definitely remember more of a "you won't be able to beat what we did" vibe from the older crowd than you're alluding to.

Having a parade gives it a defined date. If you don't define the date, it makes coordination of any other Unofficial VEISHEA trickier. Shoot we've had some debates in the last week on which week VEISHEA actually would have been on. That kind of confusion is exactly what the University and Ames PD is hoping will happen. Acknowledging a date for a parade runs counter to their goal.
