UNI vs. Illinois State

If the Panthers beat Arizona or Duke, Cyclone Nation would scream that Arizona and Duke were way over rated the entire year.

Oh my. What a terrible argument. Who are the 5 best teams this year that UNI has beaten?

The Cedar Falls/Cedar Rapids area?

As someone who used to live in Cedar Falls this always made me laugh when they lump Cedar Rapids in with Cedar Falls. It's an hour away.

The laughter is actually more about the exclusion of Waterloo compared to the inclusion of Cedar Rapids. Waterloo is literally connected at the hip to Cedar Falls and it's such a crappy place that Cedar Falls and UNI don't want it mentioned when they are brought up.

Been to Waterloo many times, cousin lives outside it in Readlyn, and it's not a place I would want to live.

You illustrate my point perfectly.

You make no point at all.

People here are saying 'uni has beaten nobody'. That is a fact, you can look at the records of UNI and WSU and find that the only top 25 teams theyve beaten are each other. Neither has proven anything.

If UNI or WSU actually had wins in the category of top, proven teams, they'd get a lot less complaints about having beaten nobody.

I don't hate UNI or WSU, I hate the college rating system the rewards teams for winning tons of games against bad competition. Neither of these teams deserve to be in the top 10. They have beaten absolutely no one but each other all year. 5 of ISUs 7 last opponents have been better than either team has beaten all year. I do not include UNI and WSU as a good team, as they are both way over rated. They are top 25 teams, maybe.

I get what you're saying, but I honestly don't think it's as widespread a problem as you do. Case in point; Murray State again. Great win-loss record, but comparatively low RPI and KenPom numbers because of their weak schedule (they played 2 non Division I teams, got blown out by Xavier and Valparaiso, best non-con win was ironically enough against Illinois State). Therefore, great record, bad numbers.

I don't buy into the root for the other Iowa teams crap. I also don't give a **** about Zach Johnson or Shawn Johnson. If that makes me a bad Iowan so be it.

WSU
Iowa
VT
NW
SFA

Wow, thats terrible

That's worse than I thought.

So if they beat Arizona or Duke, I would give them credit, but up till now, they haven't proven anything.

I call BS. This site gave tons of props to UNI back in 2010 when they beat #1 Kansas. If UNI beats Arizona, Duke, Kentucky, etc. then I guarantee the majority of people will be happy for UNI and pat them on the back. There will still be a small amount of Cyclone fans that will hate on UNI solely because they hate the Pantherhawk fans who are both purple and gold and black and gold. And from my time in Cedar Falls I can't blame them much because those fans are obnoxious.

This.

UNI is a very distant 2nd favorite team of mine to Iowa State in college bball and they've had a heck of a year. I watch a lot of their games and they are damn good and deserve a tourney run, but ISU fans would totally give them props if they manage to beat a big dog. There schedule was absolute garbage this year. 2 games against Wichita State was the toughest all year. The MVC overall was REALLY bad this year. Hopefully UNI gets their chance to prove themselves against top talent in March Madness. Another Farokmanesh moment would be nice.

I'd like to hear diehard UNI fans to tell me where they believe UNI would've finished in the Big 12 this year? Between 1st and 11th assuming they were inserted into the round robin.

I think they'd be 8-10, probably 8 seed in front of Kansas St.

First off, I like you.

Secondly, I don't recall ever calling you stupid for having that opinion. If you can find the post where I did just that I'll apologize.

Look, out of all the numbers thrown around in college basketball, RPI, KenPom, Sagarin, BPI, etc., the AP and Coaches Poll rankings are by far and away the most popular and also the most useless numbers there are. A high ranking is good for exposure, but not much else IMO. And, I will admit that as a dual fan I can afford to be "meh" about rankings, since both ISU and UNI have spent pretty much the whole season ranked. Honestly, it wouldn't trouble me one bit if ISU was ranked above UNI.

Case in point; Murray State was ranked 25th going into their tournament before losing last night to a team that has a RPI of 106 and a KenPom ranking of 147. Great conference season for Murray State, and I do feel a little bad they didn't win last night and take care of business, but I think you can make the argument they never should have appeared in the rankings.

and tcu was ranked when they played mid majors too.

i just think a team with WSU or uni's schedule needs to nearly run the table to sniff top ten. Especially WSU, they won a home game against a good UNI team, then they were like 0-4 in every chance to prove themselves.

That's worse than I thought.

So if they beat Arizona or Duke, I would give them credit, but up till now, they haven't proven anything.

I would sub in either winning @ Illinois State or Richmond for Virginia Tech.

Winning at Stephen F. Austin in the 2nd game of the season was ginormous for UNI. SFA beat #5 seed VCU in the tournament last season and had won something like 33 straight game on their home court and is currently a Top 50 RPI team this season. That was about as good a non-conference win as you can get for a "mid-major". And, yes, I know we all hate Iowa and scream about how awful they are and what not, but that was a quality victory on a neutral court.

Pretty solid non-conference schedule for UNI actually. It is too bad that Virginia Tech and Northwestern couldn't have been replaced by, say, North Carolina State and Purdue for the tournament down in Cancun, but that's how it goes. Northwestern has actually ended up being a decent win, as they have gotten better down the stretch in the Big Ten, yesterday being the exception.

Fair enough.

Question for you; up until the regular season finale at WSU, UNI was 10 points away from being undefeated; lost by 6 in double OT at VCU back in December when VCU was at full-strength, and by 3 at Evansville in the conference opener (similar to the Texas Tech game. UNI had a 16 point lead at one point in the game). If they were undefeated up until January 31st, would you have been okay with them being in the Top Ten, since that would have been "running the table"?
