Tyrese Hunter Appreciation Thread

I still think Hunter is ahead of where Monte was at this point in his freshman year. Fantastic on ball defender and great scoring ability as a freshman. His shot from outside is hopefully an area that can improve. I am confident he will have fewer turnovers as he continues to gain experience

To be fair to Monte, we ask Hunter to do a whole lot more than we ever asked Monte his freshman year.

He was awesome today. Just smothering guys on defense and attacked the basket a lot more consistently on offense. Pretty incredible stuff from a freshman PG. I know we've been spoiled with guys like Monte and Haliburton before him, but its a ton of fun watching Hunter grow as a player.

His defense is sometimes so good that it looks like he reacts instantly to whatever the opponent is trying to do. I haven't seen many people who can guard so closely and then somehow recover if they happen to get by him.

The great news is that I think his good games are becoming much more frequent.

And maybe ever in Monte's career except for his senior year...but even then he was playing with 3 guys that had at least a cup in the NBA to distribute to.

He's a great fit for this group but Tyrese would have some good fun with a Niang type around.

The numbers support this. Per Kenpom and Barttorvik, Hunter's usage rate this season (~25%) is higher than Monte's ever was (his senior year was the highest, about 24%). Interestingly, Tyrese's assist rate is also higher than every year of Monte's except his senior year.

Has he had a dunk every game? I'm sure he didn't somewhere in there but he always seems to get one, often in the half court, crazy how quick he gets up there.

There was a reach foul early in the game about 10' away and the Mizzou guy finished his step and threw a floater up to the rim and Tyrese swatted it away. It was VERY impressive.
This was a fast/real action play too, not an old school Kevin Garnett type of thing.

The more I've focused on TH, the more I've noticed he never complains or reacts negatively to things that happen to him or his teammates on the court. Really solid player mentally, and sadly pretty rare.

Idk if anyone who wasn’t at the game knew this, but there was a play where TH screwed up on offense and ran a play wrong that resulted in a TO. TJ was very unhappy and was vocal about towards TH. Told him “get it back.” On that next defensive possession TH ripped the ball away from the guy he was guarding.

It was beautiful.

Imo ISU collectively is very good in this regard but TH especially doesn't let himself look fazed.

On the team it almost looks like a 'don't let the opponent see you break' kind of thing which imo is part of the mental piece.

There are sharp contrasts to that around.
