Brockington had an amazing game yesterday, but Tyrese was the player of the game for me. He was the straw that stirred the drink.
A little Cyclone trivia: I remember when Brock Purdy was a Freshman, he was not allowed to answer press questions. Am I remembering that correctly? We had to wait until he was a Sophomore before we could hear him speak, answer questions, etc.
Why is it that Hunter is allowed in on the pressers then? Not complaining at all, just wondering if there was a recent change. I know I am probably behind in noticing things like this.
I can recall this as well, and was wondering the exact same thing. Have the rules changed for true Freshman’s and pressers?
There's your likely reason.I could be wrong, but I remember hearing it was a individual coach policy thing.
Not a better PG, but maybe a better all-around basketball player considering how much this team requires of him.I think he’s better than Monte right now as a Freshman tbh.
38 minutes as a freshman against a Bob Huggins team is tough and he came out great. I thought he distributed better last night than he has all season. He played a "different" type of game than when we were at WV and lost. Was at the WVU game last night, watched Hunter's demeanor a lot during breaks and stoppages. This seemed like a game where he really turned on the competitive juices in the 2nd half, and I love it. I would call him angry last night ( in a good way). I'll give him the credit for keeping this team in the game mentally. Seemed like he viewed it as unacceptable to lose, and it rubbed off on the other guys. This guy is going to be really really special with this kind of mindsight.
He started awful with 2-3 TOs, and looked like he would have a bad game, but then he turned it around and played great the rest of the game. Was at the WVU game last night, watched Hunter's demeanor a lot during breaks and stoppages. I have zero problem with the takes to the bucket. There was a lot of contact with many of those denials. They are going to call it sometimes and other times they won't. But you have to remain aggressive.Getting blocked a few times wasn't great but he also got to the line a bunch so it paid off.
I'll take a few blocks per game if he's being aggressive. It's much better for our offense for him to be in attack mode. The more he attacks the more he'll learn different tricks for finishing too. WVU is one of the best blocking teams in the conference if I remember correctly from the game too.Getting blocked a few times wasn't great but he also got to the line a bunch so it paid off.
Exactly this. Teams that play that aggressively at the rim are banking on intimidation keeping their opponent from repeat visits.I have zero problem with the takes to the bucket. I was just looking at this today. Can cherrypick all sorts of things depending on when you start to look but I started at the 1/26 game against OKST after we had taken our beatdown from TCU. Figured that's when we sort of refocused even though we then had a 4-game losing streak. But in the last 9 games Tyrese is averaging 13.0 pts / 4.2 rbd / 4.2 ast on 46.8% / 29.4% / 73.1%. Very good stuff other than 3PT%, but that figure is workable for a freshman.Tyrese's three point shot starting to improve even with the competition being top level.
First 14 games: 10-50 (20%)
Last 14 games: 14-52 (27%)
Keep in mind 7 of our first 14 games were against low majors. The last 14 games have been against Big 12 competition + Missouri.
I think next year we'd be reasonably hoping to see that 3PT% jump up above 30% and FT% around 75%.

Sorry, I wasn't really trying to be critical of your statement, just expanding on it.Yeah I'm not saying he shouldn't take it in; it just kind of added to what seemed like a rough start.
When he gets a floater and/or adjusts the angles at the rim we're in for a treat as fans.
His 9 assists were in that quiet Monte Morris style.
He's taking less 3s but of higher quality. Is also getting shots at the rim more to build up confidence. Hope he continues to play well! From KSU at home to present. Gabe is 6/13 from 3. That's 46%!!
I attribute a lot of that to Hunter attacking and find Gabe in-rhythm for a set shot
