If anything Texas should jump on Ferentz while he’s young
Strong thought he was going into Austin to change the culture. I think he could have done it, but it would have taken the kind of time and support from admins and boosters that he was never going to get.
It's not possible for Texas to go full Nebraska, because the recruits will always come. But they run the risk of becoming a place where good established coaches won't consider because of extraneous issues.
Texas being good is in the long term financial best interest of the Big 12. But I have enjoyed watching the slow motion ten year train wreck also. I'm so conflicted!
You could almost swap in Michigan for Texas in your post - but Michigan would have to be willing to fire Harbaugh first. He has underperformed his entire tenure (keep in mind he wasn't originally hired to win 10 games and play in January bowls - that's a goal post shift and he hasn't even been hitting those in recent years. He was hired to get Michigan to Indy and to the playoffs). Despite all the underperforming the people with the real power in Ann Arbor still love him. Definition of a true Michigan man.
You know which program is starting to resemble quickly? Michigan.
If you look at the history of the two programs, there is a lot of myth around them. Not saying they aren't great programs, but both Texas and Michigan have a National Championship or bust mentality, but if you look at their histories, they are NOT Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and even Notre Dame as far as national championships and consistent championship-level football. They each have a rival they hate (Ohio State and Oklahoma) that is and it drives them crazy.
I just don't think Michigan and Texas are these football factories anymore people think they are/should be. Still absolutely top-15 jobs, and they are always going to get recruits and will win games/put together a conference championship type of season with a national-title level season once every blue moon, but that's it.

This just dumbfounds me. Who would have wanted to play Texas at the end of the year? Crazy, Nebraska-like, expectations. Unless Urban has reconsidered, I just don't understand this at all.
It'd be an incredible case of misadministration if not.
Timing is perfect for us because while the wins weren’t there, they finally had some stud QB and RB candidates in the pipeline. While Ehlinger was decent, they haven’t had a stud duo for a while and that’s mostly what kept them from being back. We should hope they have turnover or they could be legit Top 10 next year.
Lots of people say this, but some people - especially high level coaches - really love their work. Its not about the money, its about doing what they love every day. Not everyone is content to putter around the house all day in retirement.
Yeah, I am sure a lot of these guys are more driven than your average person. Just saying if I had that kind of money in a buyout, I could find something to do with my time other than sitting around the house. Maybe not so much with Covid, but travelling can be fun.
That amount of money goes fast when you’ve been living that lifestyle for so long.
