Here are my impressions about the Cyclones after one game.

Offense:
  • Offensive line needs a lot of work. Can't run block. Can't pass block. RBs have no holes to run through. No time for receiver separation, which leads to shorter throwing windows and less confidence in running deeper passing routes.
  • WRs did not look to be working into holes in the D, and didn't work for separation off the line. Some of this could be the lack of o-line hold that lead to the WRs being less confident in having the time to run the routes to get open.
  • RBs looked good, even with the lack of o-line positive work to get them the room to work.
  • Kempt didn't look good; not bad, but not good either. Zeb coming in didn't change anything. Don't know what the outcome of Kempt's injury will be but I don't know if the coaching staff going to more confident with Zeb vs Kempt going into Oklahoma.
Defense:
  • D looked good all around. Great to see!
  • D-line was good. Great to see Lima, Uwazurike, and Bailey disrupting the backfield. And Leo looked good in the few snaps I saw him in. The group as a whole is going to be one of the best in the Big 12.
  • LBs looked good as well. Rose was everything they hype lead us to believe. He is only going to get better, and he's a freshman. We should expect great things from this young man!
  • Corners also lived up to expectations. Peavy, in particular, looked awesome.
  • Safety's also looked really good. Hard hitting, good reads, and made some plays off the edge.
Special Teams:
  • Punter Dunn should NEVER, EVER try a rugby style punt again!!!

The coaching staff will need to make major adjustments to the o-line, in specific. If they can make major improvement in that department, I think the offense can take the steps needed to get to where us fans had expected them to be. If the o-line continues like we saw today it could be a long season. Iowa is going to be one of the better, if not the best, front seven this team will see all season. But what we saw today will not result in positive outcomes for the rest of the season.

Defense looked good in IC, but I have feeling Iowa offense is terrible, lets see how they hold up against the Sooners

My thoughts... We're starting 1-5 this year.

Still think we'll finish 6-6 for bowl eligibility though. (revised from 8 regular season wins.)

This game reminded me so much of those games from the Rhoads era.

Defense comes out, gives a valiant effort and keeps it a game well into the second half, but the offense is so inept we can never close a gap or gain a lead.

The defense eventually runs out of gas and/or the offense has enough time to adjust to them, or the clock gets on their side, so the defense has to go into desperation mode to try to force turnovers and misses fundamental plays as a result.

Play a lot of close games with teams beating us at the end.

I hope this is not the same pattern again.

It’s too early for the 1-4, 1-5 predictions. Need to see more first. I will say the 2nd half of our schedule is definitely easier.

That might be the optimistic thinking. I will reserve the right to pick until after next week. If we show marked improvement on the offense then 6 wins is not out of question.

I know we are to the point where conference games are more important than beating Iowa but I'd still like to see it every once in awhile. Mac gave it more attention but it seems like Campbell frankly doesn't give it any attention. Matt has accomplished alot here but is now 0-3 against Iowa.

we've had some pretty crappy first games of hte season offensively the last two years. They do seem to improve over the season as the coaches figure out what they've got in terms of game-time talent.

I'm guessing most people didn't think we'd be looking to schedule the 12th game to get to 6 wins going into the game today.

My main thought: I never would have thought they could hold Montgomery to 2.5 yds/carry. I really thought he would have a big day.
