Thoughts from the Cy-Hawk Game

We need to get a contingency contract inked with somebody for the Saturday of the Big 12 championship game to play in Ames if...

-- ISU is not in the Big 12 championship
-- ISU has 5 wins (and both are not likely to be simultaneously true)
-- $500,000 if played, let them keep some deposit if not

I would hope we would not need it, but I would like to know we have the insurance. Not making a bowl game at 5-6 would be terrible.

We could be a good football team, at least as good as last year, and still only go 5-6. I have said it before, but our schedule is really hard.

Back to the o-line. Newell looked over-matched at C. There was one good replay showing him get stood up and bulled over for a QB pressure. Moving Good-Jones to C helped that, but Foster replacing Good-Jones at LT was almost as bad as Newell at C. And what we saw from the right side in the one running play to the right in the SDSU game was what we saw most of the game today. Not good.

1. Rose: I don’t recall seeing a ISU LB play downhill like that since Dobbins, maybe Klein. The crazy thing is he’s probably not even up to his ideal playing weight at only 228#. He’s going to be a good piece to build a defense around.

2. Kempt: After he hurt his ankle he just let loose with that pass to Allen, and then completed another one. Maybe he got out of his head a bit. I think Iowa gave him stuff he had never dealt with and it didn’t go well. Kempt is great, but Ferentz and Parker have that knowledge that comes with experience.

3. Hakeem: he got full-nelsoned on the 1-on-1 deep throw, but it wasn’t a good showing otherwise. Formations and play calling gave him some advantages last year, but this year he is going to have to earn it himself.

4. Dunn: @Corey_Punter You got a big foot and a big ****. Just work on that consistency.

5. Allen: He looks like a big time player.

6. A mobile QB would be nice.

7. American War you all should read it.

Work on punting from the pocket on a 2 step kick. Stop trying the rugby punt. When the D knows you want to do that and bring a guy to disrupt it, causing you to shank, it's looks like you punting today.

Iowa isn't too shabby. Neither are we. Both teams will have better offensive days this season.

Mismatch of the day was clearly their DL vs our OL. I was afraid of that. You can't constantly recruit slow, unathletic linemen with few offers and expect to consistently win battles in the trenches. From what I have seen from a quality offer standpoint the scales tilted heavily to Iowa.

This game reminded me so much of those games from the Rhoads era.

Defense comes out, gives a valiant effort and keeps it a game well into the second half, but the offense is so inept we can never close a gap or gain a lead.

The defense eventually runs out of gas and/or the offense has enough time to adjust to them, or the clock gets on their side, so the defense has to go into desperation mode to try to force turnovers and misses fundamental plays as a result.

Play a lot of close games with teams beating us at the end.

I hope this is not the same pattern again.

Well now they say history always repeats itself maybe this is the paul rhoads era 2....LOL....Just kidding dont get your panties in a wad now......

Agree we need another game, but I hope JP is working on the waiver. I'd much rather see the game in October vs. December.

My summary:

1. Mike Rose is a stud.
2. Tom Manning will be missed
3. OL still needs work
4. Defense will be stellar this year
5. Allen is going to be a 3rd down target (if he learns to get past the marker)

From your keyboard to God's ears.

Assuming we win versus Akron, we need to go 5-4 in the Big 12 to make a bowl game absent somehow scheduling that make-up game sometime.

We've done that once in our history, and it was last year. As much as I love this team, betting on and only on repeating that performance is optimistic.

Iowa was a big swing game towards our final record. We now know the outcome.

I said it earlier--did they watch him do both styles and think the rugby style was the way to go? Or were they that worried about coverage? It looked like he had just decided to try it before game time or something, haha.

Yeah, this just makes the SDSU debacle hurt even more, as a 5-6 year looks likely, if not a shade hopeful.

What's another year like all the rest, I guess?

Epenesa is in a league of his own talent-wise. He’s not a guy that typically ends up in Iowa City. Iowa was w/o their starting TB and MLB. Seems like the defense can absorb that loss but the offense needs a healthy IKM to help open things up a bit. They looked awfully one dimensional out there

If we only have two wins when bball season starts i don't know if I can care any more this year.. I hate that the odds suggest that will be the case. I hope that is not the case

Foster is not good right now. Epenesa didn’t do anything that a decent P5 rush end couldn’t do. Like was poor. This is not an offense to make a bowl game.

I was hoping to see improved OL play, and the capacity to make adjustments on offense. IMO, these were notable shortcomings last year. They were both missing today. Hopefully next week...
