Yup. Driving a 20 year old pick up, living in the same modest farm house they have for the past 20 years, and eschewing pretty much any luxury as frivolous.

Yet worth many times more than folks who spend money they don't have on nice cars and palace homes.

Vigorously learning and studying from an early age so you can get the hell out, only to realize later that Iowa has everything you need to stay happy.

As someone who grew up in California and has only lived here a couple of years. The things that make Iowa, Iowa. Neighbors who are neighborly. The State Fair. Deer everywhere. As someone mentioned before the snow and the humidity. Iowans are a thousand times more practical. Nothing like seeing a jacked up four wheel drive in bumper to bumper traffic in California. Makes no damn sense. The first time I went back to visit I was shocked by the amount of trash and graffiti that was there all along. It took me moving here to get that perspective. Needless to say I couldn't wait to get back on the plane to come back. I could go on and on but I would just be repeating what others have said. I am glad people get Iowa mixed up with Idaho and Ohio because Iowa's style of life is one of America's best kept secrets.

The thread is called "Things that make Iowa, Iowa". Tasty Tacos aren't outside of Des Moines metro at all.

I love Des Moines, but there's a hell of a lot more to Iowa than this town. I love Tasty Tacos too, but to say it has anything to do with state wide culture is absurd. I hadn't heard of them till I moved to Des Moines.

JUST JOKING! Well............except for people who where black and gold and think Blatz beer is a fine table wine.
 
Getting waved at by almost every driver on a rural 2 lane highway

Walking into a small town coffee shop and all conversation stops so they can stare at the 'foreigner' (defined as lives more than 5 miles away).

That stuff rural Iowa calls a 'salad'. It is a tiny bit of ice berg lettuce with Jello on top.

I haven't lived in Iowa for 30 years, but this one sums it up. Plus.....

I still love listening to my Mom tell me she's got a problem with the "Warsher".

No idea if this is true or not- haven't paid attention when I've been out of state.
Once had a guy tell me that Iowa houses are unique because very few places are houses built (pretty regularily) with Basements AND porches AND decks.
Anyone living out of state care to comment?
 
Oh, and we're one of a few places to not think anything of it when you walk in someone's garage, and theyve got both a jet ski and snowmobile
 
The complete stranger, hand still on the steering wheel, pointer finger wave. Usually appears in rural areas or small towns, but can appear anywhere.

Actually, I think everybody in small towns waving at you because they DO know you is a big part of what makes Iowa special.

Also, high school baseball in the summer. It seems like no other states do this anymore, they all play in the spring. They're called the boys of summer for a reason, folks. It'd be even better if the state tournaments were still played at Carroll and Marshalltown. Sec Taylor is great, I've played there twice, but for atmosphere, you just can't beat Carroll, IMO.

They are pending millions on renovation Carroll Stadium to try and get the state tourney there again. I just graduated from high school and we played our last game of the season against #1 Kuemper @ Carroll..rough game, but there field is very nice. I don't see how they will move the state tourney to Carroll even after they are done renovationg it. IMO Des Moines is to big of a draw to people.
