Things that make Iowa, Iowa.

1. Genuine sincerity & niceness of Iowans
2. Work ethic
3. Education system
4. Sweet corn
5. State Fair
6. Weather
7. Simplicity of life
8. Specific odors at certain times of year
9. Parties in the middle of nowhere (cornfields/sloughs)

The thing that I notice the most (now that I don't live in Iowa) is how Iowans work the butts off to get a job done - and done right.

So many other places people just want things done for them. Either by the government or by someone else. They refuse to dig in and get things done on their own. The work ethic and feeling of community is what I most miss about the state of Iowa. The south just doesn't have that.

This encapsulates much of what makes Iowa, Iowa. Iowa's exports of food and people are renown but it is an Iowan's personal responsibility and work ethic that makes that happen. People who volunteered to help at both the New Orlean's hurricane and Iowa floods disasters are effusive in their praise for Iowans.

Please don't change.

They are pending millions on renovation Carroll Stadium to try and get the state tourney there again. I just graduated from high school and we played our last game of the season against #1 Kuemper @ Carroll..rough game, but there field is very nice. I don't see how they will move the state tourney to Carroll even after they are done renovationg it. IMO Des Moines is to big of a draw to people.

I doubt it gets moved back to Carroll and Marshalltown, either. I wish it would, but Sec Taylor just makes a lot of sense logistically. It's in the middle of the state, the IAHSAA doesn't have to manage two different sites. And the field is top-notch, too. The only one in the state that holds a candle compared to it is Marshalltown.

I wish they'd go back to how they used to do it, but they never will.

I also wish they would go back to the old way, but I also wish this for basketball and Wells Fargo Arena.

I was at the Kee High game last night, I know it's 1A, but the place is almost completely empty. I went to a 3A game (Benton) two years ago, a 4A game (Marshalltown) three years ago, and 1A game (Kee High) two years ago -- same story. It's great the players get to play on a nice field and all the extra things that go along with the experience, but there's something to be said about having the stands packed for a game.

My last post reminded me of six-on-six basketball. It made Iowa Iowa. Something like seven different states used to watch our state tournament on TV it was so big.

Also, having the IGHSAU. I believe Iowa is the only state with a seperate organization for their girls and boys high school sports.

That should tell us something.

Then again, Iowa's the only state that plays high school summer baseball.

Most golf courses per capita in the world.

The thread is called "Things that make Iowa, Iowa". Tasty Tacos aren't outside of Des Moines metro at all.

I love Des Moines, but there's a hell of a lot more to Iowa than this town. I love Tasty Tacos too, but to say it has anything to do with state wide culture is absurd. I hadn't heard of them till I moved to Des Moines.

This.

As someone who grew up in California and has only lived here a couple of years. The things that make Iowa, Iowa. Neighbors who are neighborly. The State Fair. Deer everywhere. As someone mentioned before the snow and the humidity. Iowans are a thousand times more practical. Nothing like seeing a jacked up four wheel drive in bumper to bumper traffic in California. Makes no damn sense. The first time I went back to visit I was shocked by the amount of trash and graffiti that was there all along. It took me moving here to get that perspective. Needless to say I couldn't wait to get back on the plane to come back. I could go on and on but I would just be repeating what others have said. I am glad people get Iowa mixed up with Idaho and Ohio because Iowa's style of life is one of America's best kept secrets.

Nice post.

Iowa State Fair, then hospitality, good ol' boys, girls next door, steak and corn, and:

Most people have heard someone say this when they're about to slide into a ditch in a snow storm: Hold my beer, and watch this! Priceless!
