Nebraska and Colorado got negotiated exit fees because the Big 12 wanted to move Colorado a year earlier than their planned departure.
A&M and MU both want out this year. Therefore, the situation is not the same and the result will not be the same either.
I think this is the key. Nebraska wanted out right away and was ready to do whatever it took, but Colorado wanted to hang around another year to avoid the penalty. To avoid the pain of scheduling with 11 teams, we had to cut a deal to push Colorado out the door. However, once you do that Nebraska is in a position to demand a similar deal. aTm and Mizzou don't have such leverage this year with both wanting out right away.

I'd like to see them take WV, Louisville, and Cincinatti, and go to 12 teams. WV, Louisville, Cinci, KU, KSU, and ISU in the North, and the South stays as is. Or, go to 4 pods of 3 for travelling purposes; ISU, KU, KSU in one pod, WV, Louisville and Cinci in another, TT, Baylor and UT in another and TCU, OU and OSU in another. Also, it brings a Big XII presence to Kentucky, West Virginia, and Ohio.
What exactly has "started to happen" since Deaton's resignation? The Big 12 says everybody's on board with a TV rights deal...except they're not. They're ready to invite WVU to join...except they don't. The league decides to start a B12 Network...except they won't.
What is the B12 going to do without Missouri as the "instability boogeyman?"

Maybe this has been discussed, but what if the deal with WV where they had their invite pulled is because Mizzou has now indicated that they may be ok with staying?
Would make sense since they have said the league will likely remain at 10 this next year.

The one thing that is getting me lately is just how messed up the Big 12 is. I think it is becoming a toxic environment. For every positive that gets leaked about the league finally getting on track and moving forward, some institution throws a fit about it. The whole west virginia thing is the biggest of them. If they weren't going to be announced, why the heck didn't the Big 12 just come out and say it in the first place instead of letting the rumors go around all day long on Tuesday. The league still isn't working as a unified conference, and I'm starting to think it never will. It is just a league of individual institutions looking out for their own interests, who happen to play each other in games until someone finds a better deal. Or at least what they think is better.
I for one look at what Nebraska and Colorado did last year and think wouldn't it be nice not to have to worry about this crap any more. And who is even speaking for the Big 12? Boomer Sooner's AD is spouting his mouth off every time he can. We all know Texas is working their own angle behind the scenes. For a minute I thought the league was being pro-active and smart by adding TCU right away, then going after some of the Biggest Fish left in the pond by getting WV (though I prefer Louisville). But no, they can't even get that right at this point, apparently because the league can't decide how many members it wants and/or who Oklahoma/Texas thinks will provide the least resistance to their championship chances. Then throw on top of it will this all even matter in 6 years when Texas thinks about going independent anyway. The Big 12 has brought a lot of this on itself, so I really am having a hard time faulting people for wanting to get out. The league has always been a shotgun marriage, and as much as I wish it would change until it really does I'll be skeptical.

I like to read, and generally by the end of the threads, I really don't have too much to say that hasn't already been said. :smile: However, this thread is epic and I finally had to comment. I just wish every one of the schools who are thinking about moving conferences would just move already and be done. We fans deserve better.

The crazy thing is...a lot of public image problems are being caused by ONE person.
* Who publically announced that his school wouldn't be a "wallflower" during expansion, and then commenced courting the Pac 12?
* Who gave a dueling press conference with the league, publically announcing that all members had agreed to a 6 year rights deal (which was later clarified to say, "agreed to talk more about it")?
* Who is credited with the last-second demolition of plans to invite WVU to join the league, and is alleged to have caved to political pressure from a former colleague in promoting L-ville instead?
* Who contradicted the league's Monday announcement that the Big 12 Network is under exploration?
David Boren has done more to destabilize and discredit the Big 12 in 2 months than NU, CU, TAMU, and MU have done in 2 years. Every one of these is a black eye for the league. Every one of them was completely preventable, had Boren kept his mouth shut.
