Student Section

We are not the "greatest fanbase" by any stretch of one's imagination, TriceHilton. Laughable.
Pertaining to this Hilton bb discussion, Hilton of today pales in comparison to Lawrence.
Those that disagree haven't been to Lawrence.
During the Orr and Fred eras we f-ing rocked the house...comparable to the phog.
Since? Not remotely close.

Watch the upcoming Lawrence based Kansas vs Arizona game.

Phog frenzy that'll dwarf Kansas vs us in Hilton this coming weekend.
Hope I'm wrong af

Hilton is really good during key moments in big games. How do we improve the atmosphere when it is a mid conference team at Hilton? I may be off, but it seems that student sections at places like KU and Purdue are better. They seem to have more organized chants and cheers that bring participation no matter the opponent. Music plays a part too.

Two things: The walking tacos STINK, and I cannot stand to listen to people eat food. They make more noise than you think. Then, the fatties eating a huge bucket of popcorn sound is really annoying. With the exception of a pre-game Clone Cone, food at sporting events should be eliminated altogether! :)
First you tell me I'm not making enough noise. Then you tell me that I eat too loud.

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!!!

None of the crowds compare to the Orr teams in the 80s, Hilton was freaking LIT for conference games and EIU. When we best Norm and the Stipanovich Tigers, I don’t know that Hilton can ever match that energy again, it was incredible.
Different times hell we were just happy to have a team that could win at home, we knew we'd probably lose on the road. Johnny was a master of pumping the crowd up both before and during the games. He went to every dorm floor, fraternity, and sorority on campus to drive interest in MBB and it worked. It was a amazing time to be a student at ISU.

Maybe we hire Jerome Tang to dance in the student section? :chris:

You can't even get Paint Crew tickets at Purdue until you are an upper classmen. You have to register to be a member plus do Silver Cord like hours to gain points/credit.

Are we really saying that it’s not loud in Hilton because we’re blowing people out? AFH was loud this year when we were getting blown out.

Let’s stop making excuses why Hilton can’t get absolutely bonkers. This applies to Cyclone Alley and the rest of us(including the large contingent of early departures and concourse standers who use the school night, work night, kids, etc.)
I'm not making excuses. I think the students have done a poor job and we haven't seen the atomspheres that we're used to in Hilton this year.

I'm just saying I think that's largely related to the quality of home games we've had thus far, and a fan base (especially the younger ones) who are starting to get spoiled. I would imagine things will get pretty full throated here this coming week.

Yep the opponents are probably 85% of it. I do think JP needs to reduce student seating though. If we can't can't come close to filling the seats for any of the non marquee Big 12 games then cut the allotment.

Extremely dissapointed to see empty seats in the student section, given no viable excuses.
21-2, kids. Appreciate!
General admission makes the student section look worse than it is. All the empty seats get consolidated into one spot. I'm guessing student attendance isn't any worse than the rest of the crowd, it's just more visible because the empty seats aren't spread out.

"The student section and/or Hilton overall was louder back in my day" is a common fantasy around these parts.
Not a fantasy, when the announcer yelled "HEEEEEERS JOHNY" the place was crazy loud and stayed that way. Student attendance is worse than the general crowd, that I expect. Sometimes I had an exam scheduled during a game. It's obviously not an in-demand ticket except for a few games a year.

Have a Coworker that has had the same seats in Hilton since it opened and she agrees. Phones have killed in arena enviroments. People used to be locked in the whole game even timeouts

At the end of each year, I would do an average of student attendance per game (while school is in session) and let that be the number of eligible student tickets for the following year. That will free up some of the unused seats for the general public without being too draconian of a measure for the students.

You do realize that this would make the allotment of student tickets go down and never go up, right? The average for one year is the absolute max for the next year so there is no way for that average to ever go up.

I'm sorry, I am over 30 years removed from being a student at ISU, but I still believe that it is about the students, not us old timers. My teams were the Jeff Grayer teams and a little after, these are the current student's team.

Feel like a thread like this comes up every year for as long as I can remember. Hilton can still be a great environment. Been to a few the last several years that were ear shattering the entire game (BYU a couple years ago and Iowa TJ’s first year the crowd was loud the entire game). I expect fans to be locked in with big games coming up!

Good point! I definitely agree that it is the students team more than the alumni or random fans team, but if they do not consistently put butts in the seats, I do not have an issue with trying to find a solution to that particular problem. I was at the game on Saturday, and I saw the upper deck empty seats in the student section. If students don't want to lose their seats, they should show up.
