Steele

And JB also got to play the 2 worst defenses on the schedule in Kansas and TT.

I'm not saying I want Steele over JB or anything. I just would like to see Steele play again for Iowa State. Pre injury he was electric.

UNI (343.3 yds/game, 16.6 pts/gm - FCS) SJ win
Iowa (387.6, 23.3 - FBS schedule #6/#2T D) SJ win
UConn (366.7, 24.3 - #2/#5) SJ win
Tejas (315.3, 23.3 - #1/#2T) SJ loss
Baylor (477.5, 35.7 - #9#9) SJ loss
Misery (382.3, 23.5 - #3/#4) SJ loss
A&M (386.5, 28.7 - #5/#8) mostly JB loss
Tech (485.6, 39.3 - #10/#10) JB win
Kansas (516.4, 43.8 - #11/#11) JB win
Okie State (445.7, 25.8 - #8/#6) JB win
Oklahoma (383.2, 22.8 - #4/#1) JB loss
K State (398.8, 27.8 - #7/#7) JB loss

So with Jantz leading the team they beat an FCS team with a good D, and the #2/#5 and #6/#2(tie) FBS D's on the schedule. They lost to the #1/#2T, #3/#4 and #9/#9 D's on the schedule. All three loses were more than one possession difference.

With Barnett leading the team they beat the #8/#6, #10/#10 and #11/#11 D's on the schedule and lost to the #4/#1 and #7/#7 D's on the schedule. One of the two losses were more than a one possession loss.

I threw out the A&M game because both QB's played significant time in that game.

I did this because I was curious. Draw your own conclusions.

Didn't Jantz get yanked after one play or am I not remembering that correctly?

I thought he lasted two or three series in that game. As I recall, we were deep into the first quarter or early in the second before JB came in and took it right down the field.

Why do I have to do everything?

"After the Cyclones' first three offensive series' resulted in zero first downs, head coach Paul Rhoads inserted redshirt freshman Jared Barnett into the game at quarterback. He promptly sparked Iowa State to a 9-play, 83-yard drive to catapult the Cyclones in the lead at 7-6 with 3:29 left in the first quarter."

I think going that deep in, you have to look at the competition those teams faced that were the higher ranked FBS Ds. FCS, imo you throw out, because I don't care what anyone says about how good of a D it was, it was Still FCS. Iowa and Uconn, played considerably easier schedules and less potent offenses than what we faced in the Big XII. I would say that our Defense was one of hte strongest I'd seen at ISU, yet the numbers put up against us wouldn't really show that. Iowa is always going to have a better D statistically than most in the Big XII just out of virtue that they don't play many high powered offenses.

In the end, I will agree with those who say that Jantz definitely has more upside as far as what I saw this year. And the turnovers on paper were pretty much a wash, imo. The big problem Jantz had, was his decision making early in the game. Every game he started, we were behind the 8 ball and usually 2 scores down by the end of the 1st quater. If he could correct that, I definitely see him being more dynamic over all, but if we coninue to run the read option, that is his biggest area of concern, imo. We just didn't run that play right with Jantz in there. These are two quarterbacks who play the game very differently, imo.

I would love to see Steele get another shot as I am not that worried about the 2013 season right now. I don't have a problem looking to the future, but if we have a QB who can win us games now, that guy should be playing, it really shouldn't be based on weather or not the other guy could use the development for his junior and senior years. The bad thing for Steele though, is that his mistakes aren't something you can see until the game starts. I just hate the thought of always starting every game by spotting the other team 2 scores.

I don't know why this is even up for debate. Barnett is the guy and will be next year. I don't see what he has done that would make him lose that roll. He is playing great for being a freshman.

I agree with everything you said here.

I had thought about the differences in offensive competition between FCS, Big Ten, Big East and the Big 12. I definitely wasn't going to go there with the B1G though. I don't want to come across as a Barnett apologist, however. I think the numbers do indicate that it is pretty close between QB's and who knows what Jantz would have done without a foot injury.

Too bad we won't have the chance to see them duke it out next year...wait a minute...

I don't know why this is even up for debate. Barnett is the guy and will be next year. I don't see what he has done that would make him lose that roll. Jantz is just not experienced enough under center.
Ever heard of Spring practice?? The coaches have said that Barnett was the most accurate guy in practice, but that didn't always translate to games. I expect there to be a full on QB battle again this spring with a new coordinator coming in and new things to pick up on the offense.

It's not really a debate. The Steele fans are still sticking up for their guy and that's OK. I was a Tiller supporter last winter and stuck up for him. I get it, etc. SJ's lack of production against some of the easiest teams on the schedule speaks for itself. Barnett's competition this spring will likely be Sam Richardson and not Steele Jantz IMO.

Meanwhile Barnett played against the toughest opponents and venues on the schedule and got this team into a bowl game as a RS Freshman. I will say having a new OC does give Steele a chance now. Although it's pretty clear that Rhoads is a Barnett guy and he has the final say in the matter.

Not a true freshman, the completion %, INTs?
Our overall offensive output has improved when Barnett has started, and it has done so against tougher competition. Also you are going to bring up INTs with Barnett? I think our last QB had a bigger problem with that.

I think the QB job should remain open up to and until someone clearly wins it. Jared had a great year, but statistically he could have been much better. In addition to Steele, the younger guys deserve a shot also.

Opinion above, facts below.

UNI (343.3 yds/game, 16.6 pts/gm - FCS) SJ win
Iowa (387.6, 23.3 - FBS schedule #6/#2T D) SJ win
UConn (366.7, 24.3 - #2/#5) SJ win
Tejas (315.3, 23.3 - #1/#2T) SJ loss
Baylor (477.5, 35.7 - #9#9) SJ loss

A&M (386.5, 28.7 - #5/#8) mostly JB loss

Kansas (516.4, 43.8 - #11/#11) JB win

If it is true that Tony Franklin is our new OC this fits perfectly with Barnett as it is basically the same system he ran in high school.

Unless something is clearly wrong in your program, this is the way it should always work.

You would not expect the offense to get better as the season goes on? Did Barnett face tougher defenses? Only one QB had more TDs to INTs, and it was not JB. This QB also had a higher completion %.

I do not have a favorite in this race. Both have equal potential for next year imo, but the position just needs to play better.

And they both need to spend some time in the weight room. The QB's put the ball on the ground way too much this year.
