SPEECHLESS....

Never said that...

Sometimes it's worth watching for the entertainment, though :laugh8kb:

you hit the nail on the head, Fox draws its audience partially based on the entertainment factor. You can't watch O'Reilly or Insanity have a normal, respectful discussion with someone of a different viewpoint. It pretty much turns to juvenile name calling and yelling or a pro-wrestling version of social/political talk. I'll have to admit, when Geraldo and O'Reilly went at it a few weeks ago, it was pretty hilarious.

For those who cry that the media is so far left, name 3 liberal/progressive radio talk show hosts that you hear in the Des Moines area, on WHO etc..
You probably can't. The right dominates the radio airwaves in this country, and I believe this has a lot more in persuading the audience than listening to Katie Couric or Brian Williams.

I'm with Cys_Av8tr. As much as I like debating, I don't know how this became a political debate. 90% (at least) of the media outlets suck. The only reason I can't stand Foxnews is because the slam anyone who doesn't agree with them, even in their death. a la Kurt Vonnegut's obit. A literary giant that ended his obituary by slamming his children by saying their father was "irrelevant," "a sacred cow," implying that his writing was crap after he turned 55, and that his influence won't reach further than the year 2000.

When people start saying:

FOX = Republican
CNN = Democrat

I pretty much tune out. They report the same frickin' news! The only difference is that have 1 or 2 hosts that lean one way. I just laugh when people say..."FOX isn't real news! or CNN sucks because its so liberal" because with the exception of a couple of the news personalities, they are essentially the same thing.

I agree with Cyclone62, they all suck.

Also, Glenn Beck isn't on CNN, he is on Headline News. Yes CNN owns Headline News but they are still separate channels.

You'll never find me getting my news from Fox News or Mr. "I align myself with the working class while wearing a $3,000 suit" Bill O'Reilly. "Fair and Balanced" is the biggest joke on TV...but besides that fact:

using cartoons to teach RADICAL/IGNORANT ideals is nothing new. We used to use it to teach racism among other things and probably still are using it to teach things now here in America - But it is scary to think your enemies are recruiting children that young to believe these fanatic ideas.

Good lord, can't we all agree that the news media as a whole sucks eggs? It's like religion; they all have a good idea, but they go about the entire thing in the wrong way.

Or at least the people who go about it the wrong way are the only ones who get the exposure.

I agree with everyone here, the media as a whole sucks. Terrible, terrible, terrible. I'd love to actually watch the news and hear whats going on. Problem is, I can't trust anyone because there's so much of the partisan BS.

Basically, as long as I can read or see that an event happened. Just to know the facts.... who was there, what was signed, when did it happen.

Honestly I don't think that TV News media is interested in being liberal or conservative. Stations like CNN and Fox News, along with ABC, CBS, NBC new divisions and the local news, are interested in only one thing. Ratings. That's why these "News" programs are more interested in being confrontational and sensational than they are in being informative. One of my favorite movies is Network. It's scary how true-to-life that movie has become in the past 30 years.

"I align myself with the working class while wearing a $3,000 suit".

Sounds like every Democratic politician I've seen. Kind of like Al "I'm worried about global warming, but not enough that I don't fly my private jet all over the country" Gore.

What is lost in any discussion of news sources is the sad fact that too large a % of people watching the news believe whatever they hear or see on the news. These people do not make any common sense conclusions based on what they see and hear. Instead they believe the conclusions drawn by the the reporter and his/her producer.

I am afraid it is going to be a long political season on this web site! Maybe it will slow down when football fires up again.

Let me count the ways...

The View (all except for Elizabeth Hasslebeck - and she gets criticized regularly for being conservative)
Nancy Grace
Oprah Winfrey
Larry King
Dr. Heidi Cullen (The Weather Channel)
Ed Schultz
Thom Hartmann
Tony Trupiano (I don't know whether the last three are in Des Moines or not, but I don't live there)

They're out there - if you're willing to admit them
Paula Sands (strictly Quad Cities)

sorry i dont read anything from a newscorp that also endorses "Geraldo At Large".

I agree that the media as a whole has completely blown the straight forward news. Most of the shows that are referred to here are news "shows", and not the news. News shows are inherently more biased than the 6:00 news.

The main topic of the post isn't surprising at all. I've read much more chilling stories than that. It kind of runs counter to the logic of the "we bring this on ourselves crowd". These people will find a way to attack and kill us whether we are in Iraq, in the Middle East, or just all hanging out at home. Our very existence is enough for them. Being nice won't make them go away, donating money won't make them go away. Killing as many of them as possible is what makes them go away, along with support of moderate Muslims. And before anyone goes with the "we're just making more" card......yeah, we'll have to kill them too.

Dr. Heidi Cullen (The Weather Channel)

I'm sorry, but this is just too funny. Does anyone actually tune into The Weather Channel to hear what the "liberal" media is saying? "These tornados were caused by overzealous right-wing conservatives, and if we look closely, we can see that the continual hoopla of support of George Bush Jr. is causing massive Hurricanes in the Gulf." :rofl8yi:

Next maybe you'll tell me that Bill O'Reilly is fair and impartial. :laugh8kb:

Anyway, it's a matter of perspective and not worth argument.

Bill is as fair and impartial as Rush or Keith Oberman. They like to stretch the stories to make their point.

However, Adiana Huffington is way out there. And that nice looking chap on HBO flies in the same spaceship.

I'm sure there's a hardcore loyal viewership of about 5 that are willing to listen to the crazy rantings of Dr. Heidi Cullen on, what bomb-of-a-show is she doing now? The Climate Code? Forecast Earth? It must not be easy being green...

'Liberal' Media Image Persists

188-8.gif
Public cynicism about press values and performance runs deeper than perceived inaccuracies. Most Americans (53%) believe that news organizations are politically biased, while just 29% say they are careful to remove bias from their reports. When it comes to describing the press, twice as many say news organizations are "liberal" (51%) than "conservative" (26%) while 14% say neither phrase applies. This was also the case in surveys conducted in the mid- to- late 1980s and, not surprisingly, there is a significant partisan cast to these perceptions.

Republicans see the press as more liberal than conservative by nearly three-to-one (65%- 22%). Among independents, the margin is two-to-one (50%-25%). And while a third of Democrats say there is a conservative tilt to the American press, a slight plurality (41%) says the press is more liberal than anything else.

188-9.gif
But an ideological slant is not the only form of bias the public perceives. Two-thirds say news organizations pay too much attention to bad news just a quarter say the press reports the kind of stories they should be covering. Just 2% say too much attention is given to good news.

Over the past two decades, public concern about press bias has been gradually increasing. Today, two-thirds (66%) say the press tends to favor one side when presenting the news, and seven-in-ten say news outlets are often influenced by powerful people and organizations. In 1985, barely half (53% each) expressed such negative opinions about media independence.

Fox News Viewers Stand Out

188-14.gif
While the general public is divided over whether criticism of the military weakens the nation's defenses, Fox News viewers believe this is the case by nearly two-to-one (60% to 33%). Fox News viewers are also far more likely to say that the press is too critical of the Bush administration (38% vs. 25% general public). On both of these issues, people who get most of their news from the networks or CNN hold views roughly comparable to the nation as a whole.

The perception of media bias is much stronger among the Fox News audience than other television audiences. Fully 76% of Fox News viewers say the press tends to favor one side in covering social and political issues, compared with 67% of CNN viewers and 60% of network news viewers. The difference becomes even more stark in evaluations of the media's ideological bias. Fully two-thirds (66%) of Fox News viewers say the press is liberal, compared with 54% of the network news audience and just 47% of CNN viewers. The CNN audience is more than twice as likely to see a conservative bias in the media (33%) than is the Fox audience (14%).

My thoughts:

It is under the opinion of most media has a liberal bias. People that watch fox news may be more inclined to believe that but as a whole the majority do. If you can't recognize fox news as a legit news source, I assume because it is considered conservative, then you are probably far more extreme than you know. Also, if the majority around you also say the #1 cable news channel is not legit then your sources that you get your news or opinion from are very biased.

I watch Fox news and from a poll I read some time ago (which I cannot locate anymore) it was one of the most trusted news sources. Next time instead of attacking the messenger do some research on it first rather than spew out propaganda.

NOTE: The post is not to anybody in particular besides the person trying to claim fox news is not a legit news source (the threads etc.. throw me off on who I am replying to)

Notice in my post I said RADIO, I don't recall hearing that Nancy Grace, Harpo, Dr. Cullen or that walking corps L King having a radio show. DSM does not have an Air America affiliate, and Big Eddie is not on in DSM. My point is, you have your Limbaughs, Hannitys, Reagans, Savages, Medveds, Dr. Laura's, O'Reillys, etc... blasting the right wing agenda over the clear channel AM stations in the US.

I must pimp Ed Schultz here for a moment. The dude is as down-the-middle common sense american as you'll find. He calls a turd a turd whether it's dem or republican. He's out of N Dakota and is someone I think Iowans can relate with. He talks agriculture, unions, blue collar labor, as well as the usual topics like Iraqistan, border security etc...

The fact that you mention Dr. Heidi Cullen cracks me up.... I have a feeling the hot Doc (hot for a phd in climatology anyway) knows a wee bit more about atmospheric physics than Rush Limbaugh does, yet every time I turn past the dial, he sounds like the world's foremost expert!

Now, what do you mean here? I followed your post well up until this little blurb. I'm just wondering who was "attacking the messenger?" I only said that I see more spin from FOX than the other networks, and their obit on Vonnegut exemplified this. I guess I don't see how that is "propoganda." Also, just because it's the most trusted doesn't mean it's the most accurate. Hell, what's the percentage of people who find Dr. Phil to be one of the most trusted people on TV? I think he's an idiot who blames men for most of the relationships problems without giving much doubt to the woman involved. He's inaccurate in his diagnoses by blaming one party when it takes two to ruin a relationship.
