South Dakota Postgame

Side note... anyone catch the TNT Broadcast last night for UofA and Hawaii? looks absolutely INCREDIBLE. well done to Yormark on getting that done.

Yeah, plus you could stream it on HBO (I did)…an app people actually want to have for things besides college sports. It’s far more reaching than forcing people to get a few months of Peacock for a couple games.

Rocco: Imma gonna work on my accuracy this season.

Also Rocco: Goes 19/20 to set a school record, breaking the one set by a Cyclone legend, Seneca Wallace.

Also also Rocco: Currently completing 68.8% of his passes.
and that's with 5 drops in the KSU game - mostly when it was raining

I hope other teams attempt to stop the run by guarding the TEs one-on-one with a small safety

My post game thoughts-
- I'm surprised that they came out and threw the ball like they did, especially once up a couple scores. Love the attitude
- Rocco played basically a perfect game
- the TE room is extremely special, and that's with next great one (Alexander) not making a catch yet
- Sama had 3 carries for 23 yards and basically didn't play after his TD. They were bottling up Hansen, but we didn't really need to go to plan B in the run game
- X had 4 touches for 45 yards and looked dynamic and versatile
- After the first pick, the defense adjusted and had Bouman completely baffled.
- Too bad the FR RBs are dinged up, would have loved to see them in the 2nd half.
- Sowell is still sitting on a goose egg
- Dylan Lee looked very strong, especially after his first series. Did anyone notice that his TD was the same new "wrinkle" A-gap run where he goes behind the QB after the snap that Hansen had a big run with last week?
- Aiden Flora may be an all-timer by the time he's finished, he's got something very special. Too bad he got dinged up on the second PR, would have loved to see him get some carries in the 2nd half
- Watching Easton Miller truck guys in the fourth quarter is something I could get used to
- Manske is a gamer. We couldn't tell much about his throwing, but he ran the team and the offense really well. His best throw was the Townsend pass that drew a PI. He looked "Rocco-like" out there
- The team has had 4 total penalties through Week 0 and Week1: A defensive delay of game, a hold on Cooper playing his first game at CB, a OPI on Eskildsen and a false start with the 3rd teamers in the game. That is AMAZING

I think this may be the year we don’t go vanilla on offense vs Iowa…which of course plays right into their hands. Even some of our wins vs them it’s like a pre-determined agreement we’re just going to run up the middle all game.

Was there any update on Flora? Looked ok on the sideline in the 4th.

Turns out, even if your oline is good, running into an 8 man box is really hard.

223 yards rushing at 5.3 YPC is fantastic.

Every team should do that against us because we’ve shown we always try to “establish the run” before opening up the offense…that is until this year and some moments last year.

I’m kinda figuring part of the point of Saturday’s show was to give Phil Parker a lot to think about.

Which may mean that they totally shift gears, and it’s Overby and Sowell’s turns to have huge games.

The run game may need to take some time but ISU didn't exactly lean into it much as they seemed to take what was there with passing.

SD seemed to pick one thing to shut down which is probably smart since passing can be trickier if a drive gets into the red zone.

Instead of force the run game, I do exactly what ISU did against USD next week. Use the pass and tight ends to setup the run. Test Iowa’s linebackers and secondary.

I’ll put our tight ends up against any defense.

I want to hear more about this Easton Miller RB? That dude is a load. He absolutely Montgomeried some SD linebacker. They are still looking for a few of his teeth.

I realize it was mop up time but physical is physical. It is nice to give the secondary a reason to think twice before throwing their body in there.

Seriously including the 4th quarter yardage is disingenuous

Hansen averaged 2.1 ypc on 9 carries. Rocco averaged 3 yards on 5 attempts. SD did a great job shutting down the run game.

Credit to them, but not what you want to see after only having one good quarter against a KSU team that struggled with UND

Hansen is great at getting post-opening yards, but does need the designed run to be there, and thus far the OL has been inconsistent at best in that. Sama is probably better suited for being a RB2 and gadget type.

Lee did look instinctive like Hansen but perhaps with more improvisation ability if nothing is there. I hope he earns more of a role
