Slow drivers, KEEP RIGHT!

I-80 between Iowa City and the river can be flat out nuts sometimes. The passing lane is not for the faint of heart. If you're skeered driving out in the left lane GTFOver!

It's my understanding that cops drive in the left lane so they can get across the median easier if needed.

I don't understand what the big deal is with moving to the right lane to pass someone in the left lane. It's not that big of deal. Get off your high horse and just drive, someone else has just as much right to drive at the speed they want as you do the speed you want. Both are safe and unsafe depending on your point of perspective. If the right lane is blocked as well, learn some patience. By going crazy and flashing your lights you are taking your self down a level compared to just handling things calmly. I know people that if you go crazy and flash your lights flick them off and such will call you in for road rage.

It's a matter of being considerate. If you're driving in the left lane and just happen to glance in your rear view mirror and see a line of 15 cars behind you, why not just be considerate...you're not the only one on the road. There just may be a couple of folks behind you that have some place to go.

Let me add another thing that drives me completely nuts. People making right turns into the left lane or left turns in the right lane. STAY IN YOUR ******* LANE.
Pfft **** that, I'll get in whichever lane I please.

Pfft **** that, I'll get in whichever lane I please.

And when I drive over your *** in my truck it will be your fault...but likely my insurance will still be paying for it. That's because if someone does hit you, it is ******* guaranteed they won't have insurance.

I will say that large percentage of the problems on 35 and 80 are due to semi's. It's not normally their fault but if they ever make these interstates 3 lanes I think they should be restricted to the right two lanes.

My dad drove semi so I can say this:smile:

Highly doubtful that any modern automobile has 5 mph error in speed. Furthermore, what are you saving? If you had a 60 mile commute and were driving 60 MPH, it would take 1 hour of travel time. If you increase your speed to 70 MPH you only save about 9 minutes. That's on a 60 mile commute... if it's a 20 mile commute then cut your time saved down to 3 minutes. All of your aggressive and crazy driving for the sake of a 3 minute saving, not to mention that many people shell out thousands and thousands of dollars for luxury automobiles so that they can hurry up to get out of them!

Well, 3 minutes per day, times 5 work days per week, times 52 weeks in a year adds up to 780 minutes, or 32.5 hours per year. That's a lot of time for those of us that lead busy lives. Kindly move the **** over.

you can do what the guy did to me last Saturday on 80/35 in Des Moines. I was probably doing 70 in a 65 and he past me on the left. This would have been ok but I was in the far left lane so he passed me on the shoulder. I was a little dissapointed that he didn't wreck.

Lots of my pet peaves in here; like when the light turns green and you and everybody behind you sit there waiting because of the ******* talking on the phone who doesn't realize the light changed.

But here is one that I'm surprised nobody has mentioned. I never really noticed before I almost got in an wreck one time. The ******** who drive 20 mph on ALL roads when they are in a winter storm. Yeah, its snowing and yeah slow down to a safe speed but when you are doing 20 and everyone else on the road is doing 40 you are forcing everyone into a very dangerous situation. People coming up behind you have to slow down suddenly because you are going so ******* slow; slowing down in bad conditions is hard and can be very dangerous if its icy. And its very hard to pass you even if you are in the right hand lane when conditions are bad. Not only hard but dangerous. People get timid (rightly so) trying to pass you and there becomes a logjam of people trying to get by. You are putting the lives of up to a dozen people at risk because you are so ******* stupid. If you can't drive at least a decent speed (say 1/2 the speed limit) YOU SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD AT ALL.

I got pulled over in Missouri one time for driving more than 5 miles in the left lane when not a single soul was in both lanes.. The cop gave me a warning, but it's a law in Missouri. I'm a fast driver and used to being in the left lane when I drive up and down 35, so sometimes I forget.

I've been pulled over for this as well, I had actually just passed the cop in the left lane doing about 3-5 mph over the limit and was waiting until I was well ahead as to not **** him off too much... Sure enough he flips on the lights and pulls me over because I did not turn back into the right lane soon enough for him, just a warning but still wasted 10 minutes of my time.

I'm not afraid to say that I'm a bit of a speedy driver, will do 10 mph over the limit or with the flow (whichever is faster) during my daily commutes. However, if I'm doing 10-15 over with the flow and someone decides they want to do 25 and begins to tailgate the **** out of me I will slow it down just to aggravate the hell out of you. Note, if the right lane is open I'll happily move over beforehand, but in traffic I'm not going to slow down and get caught in the right lane just for you.

Coming from rural Iowa I've become a much more 'aggressive' driver over the past 2 years living around Kansas City...

I tend to disagree with this but that's just my opinion. During the day and good weather I probably get passed on the interstate about 1 out of every 3,000 miles. If it's safe I feel comfortable driving 20 mph over the speed limit(thanks V1).

Once night hits I probably drive 5-10 over the speed limit.

Once snow hits, I drive slower than most everyone on the road. When the weather gets bad everyone seems to think the safest think to do is drive about 5 inches from the car in front of them. I stay in the right lane and usually watch cocky drivers end up either running into a ditch or someone else. If you can't stop in time than the accident is your fault regardless how slow the other people are driving. You also have to consider that everyone is driving different types of vehicles that handle weather different. Not every car out there has anti lock, anti skid, awd, etc.

When I drive I consider the risk and adjust my speeds accordingly.

I'm sure you could care less but this is a problem. The left lane is for passing. When people start worrying about getting caught in the right lane they become the problem. Just because you think 10 mph over is reasonable doesn't mean that someone else thinks 30 mph over is reasonable or that 10 mph under is reasonable. It's up to police to enforce the speed limit.

I understand this, but if I'm passing people in the left lane along w/ the rest of the left lane and there is one car that wants to go 30 over I am supposed to slow down and merge right so this car can be the fastest on the road?

Like I said if there is room in the right lane I will get over, but in afternoon traffic I'm not going to slow down and get into the right lane for one car that wants to fly through everyone. Notice I'm emphasizing one car, if I'm slowing up multiple cars than I'm obviously not going fast enough for the left lane and will bow out into the right (or speed up).

You're right. I was thinking you were giving a different scenario.

If you don't have the mental faculties to drive faster than 40 mph, you need to go find a pair of scissors right now. Now that you have them, open your wallet. Pull out your driver's license and insurance card. Put the two between the blades of the scissors and apply pressure. Nothing pisses me off more on the road than driving on the turnpike where I actually pay to go 75 and coming up on someone driving the minimum in the left lane. Anything less than 5 mph below the limit and you should really get the **** off of the highway system.

Far to often the right lane on 380 is the fast lane and the left lane is the slow lane.

One other thing that really gets me that has not been touched on is the person who is in such a hurry that they drive crazy just to advance one spot. Being someone who doesn't tailgate people I leave a good distance between me and the person in front of me. Sometimes people use that to squeeze in just to advance one spot making me slow down to make more room to not tailgate. Though I have to admit sometimes I actually speed up and tailgate just to show my displeasure.

I just plain get ****** when people drive below the speed limit. This is especially the case on 1 lane roads (i.e. Ontario in Ames). It seems like I get behind one of these people every day lately!!!

People going slow in the fast lane is also infuriating!!!

Just because you have nothing better to do than drive slow doesn't mean you should slow everyone else down!!!

Wisconsin drivers are bar none the worst left lane bafoons. It's as if the entire state skipped the section in drivers ed on freeway etiquette. Mind boggling.
