Slow drivers, KEEP RIGHT!

Whomever insinuated that slow left lane drivers feel that they need to be an extra set of police is dead on the money.

These are likely the same people who have never broken a rule in their life.

Either that, or they have no awareness.

In my experience they are just plain dumb, and thefore have no awareness. I usually come up on one. I sit there for a while to give them the benefit of the doubt. Then I flash my lights. Then I flash my lights again. Eventually I get ****** and pass them on the right. When I look at them they are usually doing one of the following things:
  • white-knuckling the steering wheel
  • talking on the phone
  • giving me the stink eye for blinking my lights
  • all of the above
If I was to get a chance to talk with 90% of them, they would have NO clue why I flashed my lights at them or that the left lane is for passing. No clue what so ever.

People seem to think driving is a "right". I beg to differ.

I would be fully in favor of no speed limit like the Auto-bahn. Works for the Germans, why can't we do it? Oh yeah, so many Americans feel that we have to wrap everything in bubble wrap and keep people from making their own choices. Germans have much more relaxed laws about highway speed and when you can choose to consume alcohol, and yet they have less problems with car accidents and alcohol abuse than Americans.

It's all a matter of teaching people how to do these things responsibly. The American approach is to just prevent you from doing it at all, which of course blows up in our face.

If we would make it as hard to get a license as it is in Germany (which I would fully be in favor of), I think that some of the other restrictions wouldn't be quite as necessary.

It is amazing how easy it is to get a drivers license in this country. The girl in my driving group waaaaaay back in Drivers Ed, Almost killed us once by trying to drive through a red light that a Tractor Trailer was passing through (THank God for the instructors brake) And then another time was just plain asked to get in the back seat and not drive the rest of the day. She really was no where close to failing the class. Scary.

My wife is one of the worst interstate drivers I've ever seen. Lord knows I love her, but damn, I hate to ride with her. She likes to drive one mile UNDER the speed limit on the interstate out in the left lane. She says that it's because she might have to turn left somewhere down the road. AAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!The left lane is for those people that have some place to go. And I'm about the least sexist person ever, but don't even get me started on the percentage of women I pass on the interstate who are on the phone. AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!

I'm always in the right lane unless I come up on a car that is in the right lane going slower than me, at whch point I get in the left lane. If I happen to pass a car in the left lane while Im in the right lane, so be it. I dont get why anyone would stay in the left lane just to flash their lights and tailgate a slow car in the left lane, when the right lane is open. I was always taught to stay in the right lane until you have to get over, and get right back over once you can.

65/69 between Indianola and Des Moines is absolutely the worst place in the state for this. The only explanations that I can think of for this:

1. They are stupid and do not understand the law

2. They are so self-involved that they don't realize anyone is waiting behind them

3. They are passive-aggressive, and the only way they can feel important in the world is if they impede someone else's life in whatever way they can.
Those are eco-bunnies trying to save the world one car at a time. I usually pass them on their right side every chance i can.

Agreed. There are some people who simply should not be driving, as I don't think they can even see. Usually, the family has to intervene and talk people out of driving before the state says they can't.

It really bothers me that anyone can get a license to drive. Just a few bad drivers can cause major problems for everyone else.

Honestly, I don't think the normal American population could handle it. You're right in saying that we've been so dumbed down by laws and our ability to use pragmatic thinking. Most Americans are like the little bird that fell out of the nest, put into human care for years and have then lost all ability to think for itself. Now, put that person/bird out in the wild to fend for itself and BAM! Walked/flew right front of the on-coming bus.

One point that has been hinted at but needs to be said again. The technical terms for the lanes on a four lane highway are "driving lane" and "passing lane". I learned and used these terms while working on a highway construction project. You don't drive in the passing lane, you drive in the driving lane. But if you do find that you forgot to get over when someone is starting to come up on your six, by all means, waste no time getting the hell over.

In Minnesota a few years ago there was a bill in the legislature that wouldn't have changed the law one bit but would have authorized the posting of signs on the interstate highways reminding drivers to move over to the right lane. Of course that would go against Minnesota Nice (or Minnesotans' right to be passive aggressive).

Yes, Darwinism can cure the American condition...

Here is how I always picture people who either stop for a green light, or sit there for five seconds after it's turned green, until someone honks and brings them back

Another note- people cannot seem to use their phones and drive at the same time. I'm not in favor of outlawing use of phones, but holy cow people. I followed a guy on 35 south of Ankeny who was leaned over using his phone, and he was all over the damn road, and was half on the shoulder as he approached a car that had broken down. Just barely gathered enough awareness of the road to get back off the shoulder before he hit them.

Bolded for emphasis.

I could rant about this subject for so long.

Every time I drive on I-80 between DSM and Omaha, there are at least three or four drivers who have decided to park themselves in the left lane. If there is nobody on the right, I just pass them on the right. But the vast majority of the time, they are going at just the right speed and there is just enough traffic that I can't pass on the right, but there would be enough space for them to move over for a few seconds to let me past. Last time, I got stuck (with a line of five or six cars behind me) behind some idiot doing this. We ended up in this huge, chaotic, dangerous pack of cars and semis because he refused to move out of the left lane.

The worst of them are the ******** that speed up when you try to pass them, or who speed up when there is nobody around and you have a chance to pass and then slow down once they catch up to somebody in the right lane.

Let me add another thing that drives me completely nuts. People making right turns into the left lane or left turns in the right lane. STAY IN YOUR ******* LANE.

It's my understanding that cops drive in the left lane so they can get across the median easier if needed.

I don't understand what the big deal is with moving to the right lane to pass someone in the left lane. It's not that big of deal. Get off your high horse and just drive, someone else has just as much right to drive at the speed they want as you do the speed you want. Both are safe and unsafe depending on your point of perspective. If the right lane is blocked as well, learn some patience. By going crazy and flashing your lights you are taking your self down a level compared to just handling things calmly. I know people that if you go crazy and flash your lights flick them off and such will call you in for road rage.

AGREE! This is actually law as well, and alot of people dont realize they can be at fault if they collide with a car while doing this.
