@GTO what is the quickest route between DFW and Ames? wondering if there is a quicker route.
Some people say Tulsa is the quicker route, but I simply can't deal with changing speed limits at every freaking small town. I still take 35 all the way. Mostly the same speed limit throughout, no detours, and more services. You can save a little bit of time by going through Topeka instead of Emporia, if that helps (about 45 min-1 hour).

I'm deciding what we will do. I booked a non riverwalk hotel just incase for a couple days. We will drive if we go. Flight would be crazy expensive if we could find five tickets on the same one.

If you stay on the riverwalk and can get into SA airport. You can walk to everything you would need. The Alamodome is walking distance.
I booked the Sheraton last night which is about 100 yards off the Riverwalk. I see parking is $32 a night there. No matter what this is gonna cost about $1,500-$2,000. I bought my ticket from ticketmaster because I'm 99.9% sure it will be a better seat than I would get from ISU's allotment.

Like @BCClone said, if you can fly into SA, there's no need for a car. Most everything is in walking distance (from the Riverwalk) and there is plenty to do to keep you entertained for a few days. I guess you can drive if you want to stop at Waco to see the Magnolia Silos.

Booking off site I can figure for a trip down for a day or two. (since just there over easter timeframe and saw most things).

Hotel: 450 (2 nights off riverwalk and one somewhere along way to crash)
tickets 600
food 300
Gas 500 (suburban rolling 15 mpg at 80 mph)
Misc 250

This 2000 or so looks doable. If I fly, I can add another 3000 to total. If riverwalk, add, 400 (that might be worth it). The five people is what makes it even more difficult to maneuver.

Taking 70 over to Topeka and then taking the turnpike down to Emporia is the way to go IMO. (35-I29-635-70) You even have time to order a K-Pass to save some on the tolls. According to ze Google the route through Tulsa is pretty much the same as 35 so I have always called BS on that being faster. Just don't hit KC at rush hour and avoid 35 through downtown and you are golden.

Yea, I just booked a flight from Omaha, I checked out KC and prices weren't really any better so flying out of Omaha was a no brainer. I figured I could Uber from the airport to the hotel and pretty much walk from there. I'm guessing this is gonna be a $2,000 trip. A little more than I would like for a couple of nights but what the heck.

The Riverwalk is a blast. It's fun just to walk around, people watch and look at all the tacky souvenirs. One hint - if you want good Mexican food, there isn't any on the Riverwalk but there are some decent options within walking distance.

Now have a room booked by the towers also. Figured if going to do it, do it all the way. Not on riverwalk but between the dome and river. I AM NOT GOING UP IN THE DARN TOWER AGAIN THOUGH. About everyone in my family got queasy looking over the edge of it.

The Mexican market or whatever it is called, has some. Although that is more combo type food. The best traditional I have had is old town in San Diego. Informed me I like texmex better.

Yep, 35 and until you need gas and then do that again. When I drove down after college I stopped in Wichita as a good halfway point because they were having a jazz festival.

Someone sent me a meeting request at 7:56am for an 8am meeting and are ripping mad I didn't make it.

Sorry pal three things wrong there: assuming I am available before 9am, assuming I am free 4min before meeting start time and assuming I am prepared for a meeting 4min from now.

Would love some good Mexican food while down there. I've been looking at restaurants in the area. Lots of pricey options but when you stay in the touristy section that is to be expected. Doesn't look like there is much BBQ in the Riverwalk area. :(

San Antonio doesn't have the greatest BBQ anyway. Just not that type of town.

I'll have to ask my buddy who lives in SA for what the best Mexican place he thinks is. I remember going to a place called Rosario's last time. Very good. Can't remember the price though.

Also not exactly Mexican but Torchy's Tacos is becoming a Texas favorite.

Nope. Not much BBQ there either. For Mexican, again like BC said, there's some good stuff at the market which is a bit less than a mile way. Otherwise, Rosario's in the King William District is pretty good. My favorite place on the Riverwalk is Boudreau's.
