LAX to Hawaii is the worst. Like 5 1/2 hours and all there is to look at outside is ocean. And as much as I can sleep on a plane, I can’t do it for that long.
We're direct from Denver outbound (7.5 hours), to Chicago on the way back (8 hours). I guess tailwinds help on the return flight, because it's more than 1/2 hour btw Chicago & Denver. :)
SF to Japan two years ago was 11.5 hours...so this whining about 5.5 hours....pfffft!

That whole Amazon deal about building a new headquarters was complete BS. He said some of the big considerations were a place where congestion and affordable housing wouldn't be a problem so he picks Long Island and Arlington Va.?

That whole thing was purely a bargaining chip to get more out of their original choices of DC and NYC. Dallas offered them a ton of land, told them they'd build the light rail anywhere they wanted, offered to build a university, and after all that a 10 year tax break.

They didn't get that in NYC or DC so it obviously was a complete sham.

Wait. That’s pretty much my backyard....should I have been paying more attention to this?!

The first time I ever flew was from Chicago to London with a layover in Minneapolis. After the first hour-long flight I thought 'that wasn't so bad, I can handle this!' The 8 hour-long flight to Heathrow was a different story. I got stuck in the middle seat and the person with the window seat shut the blind before we even took off so I didn't even get to look out the window.

Last time I flew to London I was stuck in a middle seat, the entertainment wasn't working and the ******* in front of me had his seat reclined the moment the plane left the ground. I had brought a book of crosswords but you can only do so many crosswords.
I'm ALWAYS in the middle seat. Lew has to have a window or he starts getting claustrophobic. We've started opting for the Economy Plus seats on longer flights now just to get three extra inches of legroom, but the continuous elbow battle is real, folks. :(

baby mohawks.

When people ask why we had a kid (first of all, why? Why do you do that? Not you, knappschack, I get this is a general post, but I've had people ask us directly) my response is usually "we got tired of sleeping all night so we decided to shake things up"

I would never be a **** and ask that for sure....or ask a woman if she's pregnant. That's dangerous territory

When my friends and family are being honest (ie drinking) none of them are all that happy in the early stages. 75%-25% breakdown between bad and good times

Just thinking about it makes me realize why men die young

My main rule is the only acceptable time to ask if a woman is pregnant is if you can currently see the baby coming out of her. And even then, it’s 50/50.

Listen, I won’t go much further than this because we’re dangerously teetering on The Cave content right now, but people that say “oh, well if you wait until you can afford it, you’ll never have kids!” are actually being just as irresponsible as the people having kids that know they can’t afford it. They’re actively encouraging people that know they can’t have and support kids to go ahead and do it anyway. This leads to a lot of bad conditions for families, children and large parts of our society as it is. And, quite frankly, the same people that say that tend to be the same people that are against social financial support of those families when they are struggling.

To use CG as an example, they did it right. I’m sure they’ll both agree children are very much expensive, but at least CG and DH sat down, budgeted and planned for the costs of children before doing so. So, hats off to you, CG! (Though, personally, I still will never understand the desire to have a screaming, pooping machine in your house voluntarily.)

I was going something along this line too but it was bordering cave-ish. The bolded is what really torques me. Millennials get a lot of **** for seeming to live beyond their means..........but they should go ahead and have a kid anyway if they want to? There is a difference between getting a new iphone or needing to rely on hand me downs for your kids, or not being able to get them the newest and latest toy and what many face. Between the cost of healthcare, reliable childcare, almost no maternity/paternity leave (even less paid), need to pay off student loans, save for their own retirement,..........for many, having a child would be living beyond their means. Significantly so. We'd need to see some things change in our society to remedy that. For some of our friends - similar to Pants - the cost + lack of desire is more than enough to keep them from having children. For others, it's purely a financial decision, at least for now. I find it unfortunate because I don't think your financial status directly correlates to your ability to parent but that's become a big hurdle to parenthood for many.

Hey, sometimes my screaming pooping machine does really cute things. Plus, he looks a bit like me and my ego enjoys this.

It is Queens and Crystal City so, relatively speaking, the housing isn't terrible. It probably will be now that they made the announcement.

Ok, one last thing, but this isn’t Cave-like.

Keep in mind when child-less couples say it’s about how expensive kids are, it’s often not at all about cost. It’s a common thing for people that can’t conceive or have been trying to conceive but haven’t been able to, or have conceived but had miscarriages to say because it’s a lot easier to say and try to move on from than explaining all of that. So try to keep that in mind before giving them **** about that answer.

SO true, especially as couples are often waiting a bit longer to start a family.......things that may not have been an issue at 22 are at 32. And then it actually can be the cost because if your only option for a biological child is IUI/IVF/etc., that isn't cheap. And neither is adoption, for that matter. I don't know if I've told this story here - but DH has cousins who very much want a child but have been unable to. His parents were telling him about this and how they planned to adopt (we already knew) and talking about their struggles............then flat out asked if we were ever going to have children. I was like DH, can you imagine how hard that would have been had we been in a similar position? I probably would have given some reason about finances/lack of interest as well.

And theoretically the middle seat person gets to use both arm rests, but .... I'm usually in the middle as well. I know how the real world works. Good luck!

The first time I flew to the UK I upgraded on both the long flights. Last time I only could on the way back because the travel team had messed up my name on the ticket so I was scrambling to get it fixed before I left and it was too late to upgrade.
