CycloneFanatic has it's own marching band now?

Technically is ISU Cyclone Football 'Varsity' Marching Band

But we could start up a CyFanatic band.

Of course with the way everyone around here feels about the Pep Band, it might not go to well.

So sad about the amber alert. :( Poor little guy was only 9mo old.

We have 3 alto sax players in the house. I played tenor one year in HS jazz band. Hubby made his All State jazz band in HS, played 5 years in college and was a drum major. I only played marching band 3 years in college.

Early morning run ended by Caseys at 6:10 this morning. Darn those donuts smelled good.

Any movements faster than lifting a cup of coffee that early in the morning for me would probably snap ligaments and tendons.

Will bike later but will not linger near Tin Fish at Lake Calhoun or I'll want fish and beer and not fitness riding.

Gosh I'm proud of DH. He's killing it without killing himself like he was in the last job. He took a bit of a pay cut taking this job (though he'd been over-promoted to try and keep him there) and I think he's back past that point and then some now.

Yay this! Some of the young alumni here that I know work way too hard and work way too many hours, mostly I don't like the way too many hours stuff I hear all of the time.

So out of curiosity, what's your definition of way to many hours? I'm willing to bet I'm way above your criteria due to the industry and job I'm in. (I like my job and I'm pretty well compensated so that helps with the hours).

Obvs not Boxter, but I have no problem if someone wants to put in 70 hours and feels they are compensated fairly for it. What I don't like is the (mostly) American mentality of if you aren't constantly putting in extra hours and putting work first, you're lazy. Being expected to always work more hours - and not usually for more pay if you're salary. Especially as technology progresses, there should be less need for people to work so much. I shouldn't have to feel guilty for wanting a life outside of work.

I'll say it again - I like the German philosophy of if you are constantly needing to put in extra time, it either means you are incompetent or your manager is (for giving you too much work and not hiring another person). That's how they operate and they are doing more than fine. I wish we could think more like that. I very much want to work to live, not the other way around.

And on the working thing, probably worked 60-80 hours a week out of school. For me, that was a miserable way to live. Sacrificed money for less hours when I started having kids. Cut to part time as more kids. When someone was always getting sick, whether my children or my aging parents, became at home mom so husband could focus on work. Then he went to more regular hours so the kids would know him, but again less money. Now as the kids get older, I kind of dabble at things when I have time. We have kind of lived all options at various time given where we were in life and what life threw at us. You do what you have to do.

It's funny, was just talking to Mrs. 00clone yesterday about similar topic...I think I've documented that I've been in management at my company and got out of it...but I took my current job thinking that if I got back into management, it'd be my current boss' job, so the experience might be good for me if I wanted to go that path. Well, my current boss just took a temp assignment in another area as a promotion, so that job might be open, but I've been wrestling with whether to try for it if it comes open, or just stay with my current job which I enjoy and pays pretty well.

Told her yesterday that I made up my mind...over the last few months a guy ('me' on first shift) has been acting as my boss since my actual boss is acting elsewhere...my boss' boss, while a great guy, is a complete, utter, total workaholic. Literally, he works, then goes home and works at home until bedtime (or later). He's been married 4 times, they leave when they realize it won't change. I know of at least 3 instances in the last few months where my boss' boss called the 'acting' guy at home at 8 PM or later for something that didn't need immediate resolution, it's just that boss' boss had a question at that time, so obviously he calls the 'acting' guy's cell phone at 10:30 at night to ask it. Now, if I know of 3 instances just because I happened to be involved in them...there are more.

Sorry, I'm not doing that...not living that way. I don't have a problem if an emergency or unplanned situation comes up maybe once a month that requires attention outside my normal work hours, but no...not several times a week.

I think technology has caused a lot of this. When I first started in '96 I didn't have a company E-mail account. Fast forward to today and I can access my E-mail on my phone at any time of the day, plus I have remote access to our servers from my laptop. Being accessible as a company has become more of a selling point than the actual product or service in many cases.

That being said, my work stays here unless it's an emergency. My boss said he wanted all of us to put our cell# on our 'out of office' reply. I told him "No, there is coverage at night and I could be contacted by that person should need arise."

I know this has come up before, but changing careers after 40 is scary for a number of reasons. Competing against new grads that are more technically gifted and don't mind working stupid hours is probably number one on my list of why I hesitate to change careers.

ha, I just realized that in a post where I mention technology several times, I used the phrase "fast forward". I meant that in the DVR sense, not VHS.

This is why I'm only working 18 hours a week. YOLO, *******.
